Summer Learning: Ice Painting Mix your own colors to make an ice paint palette. Paint a “cool” masterpiece with the color ice blocks that you created. You’ll need: • Paper (can be whatever type you have on-hand) • Printer paper, plain newspaper, craft paper, construction paper, watercolor paper • 1-2 cups of water • Red, yellow, green, and blue food coloring • Beyond primary colors you can mix your own, or use other colors you already have. • Short Popsicle sticks, skewers, or toothpicks • Ice cube tray • Newspaper, plastic tablecloth, or tray (This activity can get messy!) What to do: Ice Paint Challenge: Mix your own paint colors with food coloring and ice cubes! Paint your own cool watercolor masterpiece. 1. Pour your water into your ice cube tray evenly. Fill each cube about half full. 2. Start with your primary colors (Red, Yellow, and Blue) by themselves and add a drop or two of red food coloring to a few different cubes. To make darker colors, add more drops. Mix well with your popsicle stick. 3. Now let’s start playing with some colors. A. Mix your primary colors in the same cube to make new colors. Think of mixing these colors together like adding numbers in simple addition problem in math. B. What colors can you add together to make green? To make purple? To make orange? To make brown?

4. Once your trays are full, place a popsicle stick in each one.

5. Place in the freezer, with sticks standing up. Freeze cubes for about 4 to 6 hours or overnight Once cubes are frozen, pull on the sticks to remove from the tray.

6. Lay old newspaper down on the table before you paint, as food coloring will stain. (Hold the wooden sticks to paint with as the food coloring can stain little fingers.)
