Notes from The EditorAnother lovely summer’s day, and another successful, happy Gala. Thanks to all those who worked so hard to make it so – an annual event enjoyed by young and old.

I love living in Isleham. It is the friendliest place I have ever lived in, and it is full of people giving their time to make it so. The Gala Committee, sports clubs organisers and coaches, leaders of the Brownies, Beavers Cubs and Scouts, parent helpers and Governors at our school, members of the Parish Council, Trustees at The Beeches, and committees of local organisations, all are run by generous people who give their time to make this village the great place it is. Do you have a few hours a week, or a month, to do the same?

In this issue is an advert for a School Governor and an appeal from Mark Goldsack for new Trustees at The Beeches; not forgetting that the Informer still needs an editor.

There is an old adage that says “You get back what you put in”. Why not give it a try?

Isleham WIThere was no June meeting, as our members made an evening visit to Ely. Whilst some of us spent a peace-ful and interesting half an hour on

the Liberty Bell on the River Ouse, another group enjoyed a walk, led by Sheila Taylor, in Pocket Park. Afterwards we all met up at The Cutter for a meal. Thanks to Sheila, Pauline and Margaret who organised the evening.

We entered a walking float entitled ‘Isleham Memories’ on Gala Day, and won 3rd prize! Members represented many of the shops that used to be in the village, and brought back lots of memories of days gone by.In July we celebrated ‘Summer in Isleham’ with an illustrated talk by Alistair Burn about the wildlife found on The Wash, and a quiz ‘What do you know about your village’ provided by Ann Cant.We meet at 7.30pm on the 2nd Thursday of each month at The Beeches. If you are interested do come along, you will be very welcome

For further information contact Glenda PreeceTel: 01638 780734 email: [email protected]

Isleham SocietyIn June our monthly meeting was exchanged for a visit to the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing Sporting Art which is split into two sections. The original building (the old Palace) is a traditional art gallery with some excellent paintings. Across the road (in the former Kings Yard and the Rothschild Yard) is the new section (opened by the HRH The Queen in November 2016) with gift store, refreshments and a lovely central courtyard. - The Kings Yard is believed to be the oldest racing stables in the world. Here we were able to see a former race horse being helped back into normal life in the Peter O’Sullevan Arena, which was very interesting. One of our members, Brian Houghton, was brave enough to try his hand as a jockey, having been given instruction by a former stable head lad.

We were told he was travelling at 40mph, and was only beaten ‘by a head’! We meet monthly at 7.30pm in The Beeches, on the 3rd Thursday of the month, except in August, and visitors are always welcome.

Ely Hero Awards 2017150 excited guests gathered for the very first prestigious Ely Hero Awards Ceremony on Monday night at the Maltings in Ely for what has been de-scribed as Ely’s version of the “Pride of Britain Awards”. With laughter, tears and a standing ovation - what a night to remember for our finalists, winners and their guests!

Launched back in April of this year, the team at Ely Hero Awards, organised by a local drain care company Metro Rod (Cambridge), based in Ely, have been searching for nomina-tions for heroes in 10 different categories. These categories were all sponsored by local businesses – CHS Group, Thor Labs, Grovemere Property, Life Fitness, Puggles and Seahorse Swim School, Elyi Magazine, Red Shoes Accounting, and WGA Solicitors and Metro Rod (Cambridge) themselves along with the Ely Standard Newspaper as their media partner. A local graphic design company - Infiniti Graphics, owned by Luke Smith produced the awards logo, website and all the promo-tional literature.

With the local community completely getting behind this event, an overwhelming amount of nominations were received, they were collated by local Virtual Assistant, Sadie Finch and final-ised by the judging panel who had a tremendously difficult task to decide on the winners of each category.

The excitement during the evening was palpable, one guest said “I feel so humbled to be here tonight, thank you so much for allowing little old me to be a part of this!”

There was a lot of laughter, not a dry eye in the house dur-ing some of the award presentations and at the end a standing ovation for THE Ely Hero, Bert Russell who at 90 years old is a tremendous example of true altruism, dedicating his life to help his community in Little Thetford, a truly worthy winner.

The Mayor of Ely, Cllr Richard Hobbs was an incredible com-pere for the evening, announcing all the finalists, with the winners of each category being presented their awards by the respective business sponsor. Local Visual Artist, Greg Webley and his team provided excellent visuals, sound and lighting to create an incredible atmosphere at the venue. Guests listened to the wonderful sounds of local up and coming duo “Elma” who played and sang brilliantly.

The evening was an incredible suc-cess for all involved, Naomi Sher-wood, Business Development Man-ager at MetroRod (Cambridge) said “the evening had at its heart and at its foundation such immense posi-tivity, it gave all of our finalists the chance to have the recognition they deserve for all the truly inspirational things they achieve. The great deeds of individuals in our City are over-whelming, they should be rewarded and celebrated and this evening gave those people the chance for this, eve-ryone should be so proud of them-selves. I am genuinely overwhelmed and humbled at the success and would like to pass on a huge “thank you” to everyone that has been in-

volved in every capacity. I am very pleased to announce that we will be bringing Ely Hero Awards back again in 2018 -we wish to embolden and encourage others to come forward and share their stories and for our heroes to continue with their great deeds. Congratulations to all of our worthy finalists and winners”

Letter from The Beeches

Dear Isleham Parish resident.

The Beeches Isleham is now in the 4th year of operation since open-ing and after making a small profit last completed year, continues to grow in all aspects. We have a voluntary group of Trustees to govern the running of the centre, and the charity for which it represents. Following some changes we are now light of a few volunteers. Ide-ally we are looking for accounting, legal, HR and management expe-rience but would consider anyone that thought they could input and help maintain The Beeches as the Hub of the village and surrounding area.

The trustees commit to attend an evening meeting each month, and some also support operationally with voluntary sessions in the of-fice, behind the bar, and in other ways. It is really the commitment and on going support of the centre that we seek. If you are interested in finding out more please contact Mark Goldsack, Chair Trustees, on 07831 168899 for an informal discussion. We have the potential for up to 4 additional Trustees, so please do contact should you have an interest.

Kind regardsMark B [email protected]

Isleham Parish Council Update

The Parish Council meets on the first Monday of every month at 7.15pm. Meetings are held in the main meeting room of The Beeches. Members of the public are invited to attend the meetings and 15 minutes are set aside each month for public question time. (No food or drink to be bought into the meeting room, please.)

Full copies of the agendas and minutes are available on the Parish Council website, the notice boards outside The Beeches and adjacent to the cenotaph and from the Parish Clerk, Rich-ard Liddington: tel 01638 781687, email [email protected].

Police Matters• Several vehicles in Limestone close were broken into in June• It is also disappointing to inform readers that the storage shed which houses machinery used for maintaining the cricket square has been vandalised on two occasions recentlyPlay Area and MUGA Report• The recently established tennis club is still looking for new members. Please contact Mr Clint Grove on 079 4644 1351 for more details.• The new tractor storage shed is almost complete • The Parish Council hope that residents enjoyed the recent travelling fun fair. Allotment MattersThere are still a number of plots available on both the Dunstall and Three Trees Allotment sites. The rent for a ten rod plot which equates to 252m2 is just £13 per annum! Please contact the Parish Clerk for details. Highways Report• Residents may be interested to know that a 24 hour traffic survey undertaken between 10th & 16th June identified 85% of vehicles using Fordham Road, registering speeds in excess of 43mph. As this is a 30mph zone this really is quite fright-ening and clea at risk. On behalf of the Parish Council can we please ask all drivers to SLOW DOWN? • Residents will soon see a Vehicle Activated Speed Camera in the village. This has been almost exclusively funded by a grant from East Cambridgeshire District Council. • You may also be aware of the increasing number of commer-cial posters and flyers that are being attached to lampposts and other street furniture within the village. From the start of July Jacob Mayall, the village litter picker, will be removing all such items. • Parking outside the CO-OP remains a major concern, with drivers regularly parking either across the footpath or on the double yellow lines. This clearly causes danger to both pedes-trians and other drivers. Can we please ask all residents to en-sure they use the designated parking spaces at the rear and immediately in front of the building ?Planning Applications

County Councillor’s Notes

It is a continual delight (so far!) to have been chosen a few weeks ago to represent Isleham on Cambridgeshire County Council. Councillors and officers at Shire Hall are quickly getting used to hearing Isleham views as part of their discussions – al-though I have to remember that I am there to get the best deal for Cambridgeshire as a whole, as well as for our pleasant east-erly corner of the county. As with any new job, life as Isleham’s County Councillor is definitely a learning curve. I am very lucky to be able to work with excellent colleagues in both Isleham and Soham who have been showing me the ropes, and to have such a constructive and energetic Parish Council in Isleham. We all share the same ambition to try and make life in this village the best it can be, and I am looking forward to keeping up the teamwork over the next four years. One of the most immediately visible things the County Council does is maintain our roads. From day one, people in the village have been raising highways issues with me, from parking to potholes. I do encourage people to keep doing that. We should soon have a pair of vehicle-activated signs to deter speeding, thanks to a successful Parish bid on the County’s local high-ways improvement fund. I am hoping these will make an im-pact on the way drivers behave, especially with people from outside the village who may not be so careful about the safety of Isleham’s children as readers of the Informer are. I am also hoping we will soon be able to renew the double yellow lines outside the Co-op which have faded badly and are too often ignored by people who park and block visibility on that busy corner. One thing everyone who cares about the condition of our roads can do is to make their concerns heard in an effective way. Any-one can report a pothole, faded road marking, or other high-ways defect directly through the County Council’s website. https://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/residents/travel-roads-and-parking/roads-and-pathways/roadworks-and-faults/ Reporting an issue this way makes sure that our Local High-

Isleham Bowls Club We have now passed the mid-point of the season and the eve-nings are starting to draw in. We have a good mixture of nice sunny evenings, a few cooler ones and not too much call for the waterproofs. In the Ely & District leagues, 12 months ago the men were sit-uated in 2nd place but what a difference a year makes. This season we are currently struggling near the bottom of the di-vision, same players against the same teams; that’s why we play the sport because you never know! Wins away against Fordham and at home to Newmarket have been the highlights. The ladies have also struggled this season to string some good results together and are currently 2nd from bottom in their league. The afternoon league (which mainly caters for the ‘re-tired’ members of our club) are having a mixed season, win-ning some and losing some and they are currently sitting in mid table of division 2. However, in the mixed Cambridge & District league we were promoted to division 2 for this season and have played beyond expectations. Having played 14 out of the 20 matches we have won 10 and are clear at the top of the table. There are a lot of points are still at stake so we will need to push on and hope-fully join the elite next season. On an individual level, Darren Dunbavin has joined up with 7 other young under 25’s boys for the Cambridgeshire team and have qualified for the national finals to be held later in the sea-son at Leamington Spa. The club hosts bingo evenings every Wednesday (play for cash prizes) evening to help sustain funds and anyone is welcome is attend. Well Done Penny! My daughter Penny, who is ten years old decided in April that she wanted to cut her hair and send it off to be made into a wig for a child going through cancer treatment.

She also asked people to sponsor her to do this and in doing so raised just over £1891 pounds for Cancer Research. Penny decided to have her hair cut off at the end of June and invited some friends and family to watch it happen.

Penny was over-whelmed by the gener-osity of everyone who supported her and was thrilled by her new haircut (thanks to Jess Butler)

service and the familiar hymns of praise loved and sung by generations before us; ‘To you, O Lord, our hearts we raise in hymns of adoration; To you bring sacrifice of praise with shouts of exultation: Bright robes of gold the fields adorn, the hills with joy are ringing,Yhe valleys stand so thick with corn that even they are singing’ High Summer. An opportunity to pause and ponder; to look afresh at the harvest fields around us and see within the seasons of sowing and growing, maturing and fruit-bearing a correlation of the seasons and rhythms of our own lives; to recognise and marvel at God’s gift of creation and to acknowledge our part in tending and stewarding the earth’s precious resources entrusted to us. It is a joy and privilege to live and minister in such a beautiful part of the world, and I am looking forward once more to Harvest celebrations in our village churches. Do come and join us…. And let’s count our blessings together. ‘All good gifts around us are sent from heaven aboveThen thank the Lord, oh thank the Lord, for all his love.’ Blessings,

For me, growing up in rural Lincolnshire, it meant glorious care-free August days; a time when my friends and I would spend long days outdoors paddling in streams or building dens, watching the swifts and house-martins swooping and calling in the bright sky. I loved the wildflowers, especially the dandelions; we would lie on our tummies, chins cupped in hands, watching the bees on the yellow flowers, and gather the dandelion leaves (‘rabbit meat’), for our pet tortoises and rabbits. Best of all, when the dandelions magically transformed into fluffy dandelion clocks, we loved to blow the seed heads into the air and ‘tell the time’, watching them float and disperse in all directions, symbols of the new stages and directions about to happen in our young lives. ‘What’s the time? ‘One-o clock, Two –o-clock. Three o clock’….. and all too soon, with sinking heart and that knot in the pit of the stomach, half fear, half excitement, the dandelion clock would remind me it was once more September and ‘School Time’.But the bitterness of returning to school was tempered by the sweetness of this ‘Season of mellow fruitfulness’; plum and apple picking, jam-making, the heady smell of hay and warm grain and preparation for Harvest Festivals. I loved, and still love, Harvest Festivals; the colourful sight and smells of fruit and vegetables, wheat sheaves, dahlias and chrysanthemums, mixed with the aroma of candle-wax, old hymn books and bees’ wax polish; the uplifting words of the

High Street Church

Aren’t we blessed to live in this lovely village? Oh, there is always something to moan about; the lack of public transport, the dog mess on the pavements, the park-ing problems up at the Rec or near the Churches etc etc. But there are definitely things to be grateful for....a great school, a choice of good churches, an approachable Par-ish Council and a wonderful sense of community spirit, to name just a few.

In the Bible, Gods Word, it says....”Let everything that has breath, praise the Lord”. And you know, what always amaz-es me? When I determine to be thankful, it changes my outlook on life and makes me more cheerful, whatever is going on. The new Church is creating a lot of interest from visitors to the area as well as villagers and Terry Malkin is in constant demand as a ‘Tour guide!’. If you are interested, contact the Church Office 01638 780985 and we can easily arrange a tour for you too.

High Street Church is still carrying on with all it’s usual ac-tivities throughout the week and you are, of course, very welcome to join us…..particularly on a Sunday at 10.30am or 6.30pm.

You will find us to be a group of very ordinary, normal folk (well, some of us are!), who love the Lord Jesus Christ and are constantly aware of how much we have to be thank-ful for. We would love to meet you and if you would like to meet one of us in your own home first, just give us a ring.

The Beeches in Dramatic Rescue! The new drama group that was set up in Fordham in April were suddenly faced with a crisis three weeks before their first show was due to be performed. Fordham Amateur Dramatic Society (or “FADS”) only then learned that the stage lighting at Fordham village hall didn’t work! This was the last straw in a catalogue of other problems with the hall, so the group decided that another venue was urgently required – which is when the Beeches came to the rescue with the offer of a slot on Sunday 9th July. The show, two one-act comedies, was well received by an audi-ence of over 90, a good turn-out on a sultry July Sunday. Local celebrity, crime novelist Alison Bruce, made her debut perfor-mance playing two roles in “Whodidit?”, but it was probably her daughter, Lana, who stole the show with her portrayal of the dotty house-maid. “The fat lady sings in Little Grimley”, a tale of a drama group reduced to four quarrelsome members, also raised much laughter, particularly Graham Carter and his banana consumption! Many thanks to Louise and the staff of the Beeches for their help and assistance with the production.FADS have now decided that we strongly prefer to continue using the Beeches for future productions and we are amending our name to Fenland Amateur Dramatic Society to reflect this change of venue. We aim to perform about three shows a year, mainly comedies and thrillers, and are currently planning our next production – probably for early November. We even ex-pect to have a “set” for out next show – which was not possible at the Fordham venue. We are always looking for new mem-bers, whether actors or back-stage helpers. Anyone interested can be assured of a warm welcome to the group. Contact Mal-colm or Doreen Speirs on 01638 780783 for further details, or email [email protected]

Isleham CofE Primary SchoolAs the school year draws to a close, we have been pleased that the weather has been kind to us and enabled our many outdoor end-of-year celebrations and events to take place. The children competed capably in their end-of-term sports day races on the 10th July which followed a traditional race format this year, offering the children the opportunity to gain points for their house team in addition to personal stickers for each race. This year, it was the Emerald house team who were crowned over-all victors of the sports day, but the children all showed great team spirit and were all justifiably proud of their many stick-ers and awards on the day, and looked fantastic in their house colour tops and hats. On the 12th July, the annual summer musical concert took place on the school field and was followed by a wonderful Bar-becue prepared by the PTA, with ice-creams and drinks also on sale. This was a great opportunity to showcase the many excellent singers and musical groups in the school, in addition to the music assembly led by music teacher Mr Wright on the 18th July. We wished our Year 6 children a fond farewell too at the end-of-term disco and pizza party on the 14th July, again offered by the PTA, and their final assembly on the 21st July. It has been a wonderful school year, with the school recently celebrating strong SATs results again achieved by the children in end-of-year tests. The school continues to be a very success-ful place to work and learn, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year as Headteacher at Isleham.

The staff and I look forward to seeing the primary school chil-dren back at school after the summer break on Tuesday 5th September 2017, and wish the Year 6 children every good wish as they move on to start their secondary school journey. We also all wish everyone in Isleham a happy and safe summer break.Mrs Sarah SkillernHeadteacher
