As I write we are still waiting for details about the development of our ‘Stage by the Sea’ project. The modernisation of the town’s bandstand that will complement the sea front as an iconic design and which will provide a performing centre for musical groups and other players, it will also act as a shelter when not in use. In my first week of Office I had the pleasure of raising the Blue Flag (the international award for beaches) on our seafront. Littlehampton was one of only 55 beaches nationally to have received the coveted award proving that we have a clean and safe asset for all to enjoy. My charity for the duration of my term of office is Hearing Dogs for the Deaf - a national charity and centre of excellence in training dogs to alert deaf people to important sounds and danger signals. It is my hope that we can raise enough money to buy and train a dog which when fully trained will help improve the life of a Littlehampton resident. I have some events planned already including a 10k ‘Jog for a Dog’ event on the seafront supported by Morrisons, and a demonstration from the Hearing Dogs team and a Family Fun Weekend sponsored by Tesco. Details of the events will be published on the Town’s notice boards. And rest assured that I will be selling my yummy homemade Jam, cakes and chocolate brownies at various events. PART OF A THREE-WAY TWINNING LTC is proud of the Town’s relationship with Chennevieres-sur-Marne, a pleasant suburb of Paris on the banks of the river Marne, and with Durmersheim, located close to the Rhine and theBlack Forest, between Karlsruhe and Baden-Baden in south West Germany. And with 2013 marking the 25th anniversary ofour twinning with Durmersheim, it seemed like a good time to fly some facts as well as flags. For instance, did you know that:Twinning is not just for the benefit of Councillors. Town twinning began after the last war as a way of getting ordinary familiesand individuals to visit, particularly near neighbour countries, and stay with similar families or individuals in their own homes. This would help mutual understanding of each other’s cultures and way of life.

None of the twinning visits that take place are paid for by the Council. Most of the visitors arejust ordinary citizens who have joined the Twinning Association, paid for their own returncoach fare, and then enjoyed great hospitality. There is usually a visit arranged to a local place of interest (castle, winery, abbey, Folk Festivaletc), and a gathering of all the participants for a celebration, as well as shoppingopportunities! We fund raise in Littlehampton to support reciprocal entertainment over here.Various clubs and societies have been, or are still, involved with exchange visits, including theEdwin James Choir, The Littlehampton Academy steel band, football and swimming clubs. You don’t need to be fluent in French or German. Most people speak a little English and, withthe help of a little mime, communication is surprisingly easy!Dr James Walsh, President of the Twinning Association said: “Some people and families havemade long-standing friendships, and we have even had one marriage through the twinning. It is open to anyone of any age to join the Twinning Association, and to join in the exchangevisits. The only stipulation is to be able host your opposite number in your own home over aweekend once a year.Try it; it is good fun too!” For details please contact the Chairman David Twinn on07776 253055.

INTRODUCING...

I used to go to the Council meetings, raising issuesof local concern. When nothing seemed to happen Idecided that moaning was getting me nowhere andthat I needed to get myself elected if I wanted tochange things.

The people of Littlehampton. Being born here I've hadthe privilege of knowing some great characters andfamilies; going to school with them, using thesame cafes and shops and lifting a pint in the pubs,(when we had some) – I've grown up amongst themand loved every minute.

Making sure that developers pay their wayand provide us with the infrastructure improvementswe need and want. Whether it be the Lyminsterby-pass, facilities for our young people, new medicalcentres, or just that pelican crossing we've beenwaiting so long for.

I collectLittlehampton souvenir crested china and enjoy goingto punk rock gigs.

Party politics are putbefore the needs of local people. Fortunately thishappens less and less now. If you are elected to localgovernment then you are there to represent thepeople, not to wave a political flag.

Silent Comedies,Laurel and Hardy, Shrek, Life of Brian - basicallyanything that makes me laugh.

CharlesDarwin and Neill Kinnock, both great reformers intheir own fields and influential in their beliefs.

Don't just sit there andmoan. If you are capable, get off your backsideand do it.

Cllr Jill Long the Chair of Littlehampton’s Planning & TransportationCommittee would like to thank residents very much for all theircomments on the Littlehampton Draft Neighbourhood Plan. Thesehave been very helpful and the Committee has made somechanges to the Plan to ensure that the public’s views are reflected. The final draft, called the ‘pre-submission plan’, will be publishedon the 5th June followed by a statutory consultation period of sixweeks (concluding on 17th July).

Cllr Long will welcome any further comments during that period. Please visit the Town Council website from the 5th June to see the‘pre-submission’ plan at www.littlehampton-tc.gov.uk/neighbourhoodplan. Hard copies can be obtained from the LTCoffices. There will also be a drop-in session at the Town Council inthe Millennium Chamber on Wednesday 10th July between10.00am and 7.00pm.

Any representation on the pre-submission plan should besubmitted: by post to The Town Clerk, Littlehampton TownCouncil, Manor House, Church Street, Littlehampton BN175EW by email to the Clerk at [email protected]

Honouring the fantastic work of young peopleacross our District, five of the young leaders atLittlehampton’s Young People’s centre Project 82were runners up in the group category. The fab five,Chelsea Saunderson (16), Cassy Brown (16),Maddie Galea (16), Bradley Squire (17) and AaronNeale (13), collectively notched up over 250 hours ofvolunteering at P82 last year.Dedicated young people who recognise the value ofcontributing to their local community as well as to thecentre at which they all attend as senior members, they worked hard to come up with and facilitate newideas for each session. Having overcome some kindof personal challenge, each of the youngsters hasdisplayed strength of character, with all of them goingon to become positive role models for their peers.Aaron Neale was also nominated as an individual inthe 11-13 year old category. Attending sessions sinceJuly 2012 Aaron quickly became very popular withthe young people and staff. Also the youngestmember of the young leader’s team at Project 82,Aaron has suffered the sad loss of both his motherand his grandmother in the past year, making hisachievement especially poignant.

THE TOWN COUNCIL’S AMENITY TEAM(THE A-TEAM) HAVE MOVED TO A NEW HOME ONTHE LINESIDE INDUSTRIAL ESTATE IN WICK.Caring for the Town’s allotments and roundabouts, as wellas taking charge of graffiti removal, the maintenance of theCouncil’s buildings and a host of other tasks, thelong-awaited move follows many years at The DairyCommunity Centre site.Previously all plants and equipment had been stored in avariety of sheds and outdoor spaces, but now the A-Teamhas all the tools of their trade under one roof. Also benefitting from a new Tipper (to replace an oldvehicle that has done sterling work across the years),the new vehicle will enable the A-Team to maximise onefficiency, as well as being able to provide maintenancesupport on the five allotment sites.

LAST CHANCE to enter LTC’s gardenand allotments competition 2013How does your garden grow? If the answer to that question is ‘verynicely, thank you,’ perhaps you should get a wriggle on and enter yourself– or a neighbour – before the nomination process closes on 28 June.Aiming to promote civic pride and recognise the achievements of localgardeners who enhance the community and make the town moreattractive, nominees must reside within the BN17 postcode. Prizes will beawarded in eleven categories and winners will receive vouchers fromprincipal sponsor, Ferring Nurseries. THANKS TO A GIFT FROM NEW-IN-TOWN SUPERMARKET MORRISONS, the future of Wick Information Centre(WIC) is on a firmer footing, certainly for the next few years.Given £80,000 by the supermarket, to be paid as a service agreement by Littlehampton Town Council in equalamounts over a period of 5 years, the money will be used to ensure the long-term viability of the Centre and itsservices, reinforcing its vital role within the community.Run by 11 volunteers and a manager supported by All Saints Church and funded from a range of sponsors,WIC provides free, impartial support and a signposting service to everybody regardless of race, gender, disability, sexual orientation or nationality.
