Message from the DirectorAs the days grow longer, the sun warms the air, and the rain lessens, our thoughts turn to beautiful summer days filled with all types of exciting opportunities for our residents and others to enjoy throughout the city. As you look through this Summer Activity Guide, I’m sure you will find a good variety of programs, activities and facilities which will help you meet your leisure time needs.There are many organized activities and programs for you such as soccer, golf, and basketball, and don’t overlook our Camp HERO, Neal Summer Program and Summer Parks Program. For adults we have new water fitness classes and golf programs that you need to check out, in addition to adult sport programs. If you prefer to do it on your own, then please take advantage of golfing at the Travis B. Bryan Municipal Golf Course, swimming at one of our aquatics facilities, or reserving a pavilion in one of our parks for a private outing or celebration.The month of July is National Parks and Recreation Month, so please check back regularly to see what fun and exciting activities we have planned for the month of July that will help us celebrate our Parks and Programs as well as “The Good Life. Program RegistrationRegistration for most programs can be made at the Parks and Recreation Office, the Neal Recreation Center, and the Bryan Aquatics Center. Please refer to individual program descriptions for times and locations.

Course InformationCommunity Education classes will meet at City of Bryan, Bryan Parks and Recreation, BISD, and area business facilities. Specific class information will be given to each participant upon registration.

Cancelled ClassesBryan Parks and Recreation reserves the right to cancel classes, change times or locations, and to substitute instructors as deemed necessary. Classes will be cancelled 24 hours in advance of the scheduled start date if the minimum enrollment numbers are not met.

Medical PolicyThe Bryan Parks and Recreation Department will not prohibit any person from participating in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or to other activity participants.

LiabilitiesThe City of Bryan cannot be held responsible for any loss, material or otherwise, incurred while following an instructor’s directions. The City of Bryan is not responsible for any personal property left at any class site. Students take classes at their own risk.

Transfers & RefundsIf you are not completely satisfied with a class or activity, please contact us so we can respond to your concerns. In addition to using your feedback to help us improve, we will arrange one of the following: For programs - placement into another class, a credit for future of any activity we offer, or a refund. For rentals - reschedule facility rental or refund. Refunds will only be allowed due to cancellations prior to the rental date. The rental contract must be returned to the Parks and Recreation office at least 1 day prior to the scheduled rental. In the event of inclement weather, rentals may be rescheduled by contacting the Parks and Recreation office the next business day. All refunds for programs and facillity rentals will be assessed a fee of $10 or 10% of the total rental fee , whichever is higher.

Returned Check PolicyThe City of Bryan will assess a $15 service charge for all returned checks. Participation in leagues, classes, or facility rentals will not be allowed until the check and service charges are paid in full.

Facility rules for entrance:* Children ages 7 and under must be accompanied by an adult (18 years or older) who is capable of caring for the child in the water. One adult chaperone must be present for every 2 children ages 11 and under.* All patrons (swimmers and sunbathers) must wear swimming suits with appropriate lining.* Abusive, loud, or profane language is not permitted in any part of the pool facilities.* Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the premises* Patrons may bring in their own food and drinks; however alcohol and glass bottles are prohibited.* Any persons known or suspected of having a communicable condition, open sores, bandages, or open wounds shall be denied admittance. The head lifeguard will have discretionary powers in these matters.* All swimmers just take a complete shower before entering the pool.* Playing or hanging on the ladders is strictly forbidden.* Rough play, dunking, water fighting, diving off another person’s shoulders, riding on another persons back or pushing others into the pool is not permitted. NO HORSEPLAY! * Swimmers are not allowed to run and dive over the edge of the pool, dive or jump from the lifeguard stands, or dive or jump from the decks backwards. No twistings jumps or flips from the side will be allowed.* Distracting a lifeguard from his/her duty or falsely summoning aid is prohibited.* Inflatable beach balls and floating apparatuses shall be allowed only a the discretion of the head lifeguard and restricted to the shallow water only.* Staff reserves the right to check gas and coolers at the entrance of all pool facilities* Lifeguards have complete authority at all times under the supervision of the head lifeguard.* The City of Bryan reserves the right to deny entry into its aquatic facilities should the rules of the facility not be followed.

Olympic-sized pool, featuring a 175-foot waterslide, a baby pool, two diving boards, and plenty of space for the whole family to bask in the sun! The pool is open to the public throughout the year. It is also available for rent after hours on a first-come, first-served basis. The water is heated to make it a great temperature for fun year round!

Bryan Aquatics offers swim lessons ages 3 - adult and for parents with infants ages 6 - 36 months. Each session meets Monday through Friday for two weeks. We guarantee 8 out of 10 lessons. Parents will receive a parent handbook for each session. Additional arrangements can be made for special groups by contacting the Bryan Aquatic Center at 209-5222. Registration for each session closes the Thursday at 5 pm prior to the session starting.

The purpose of our swim team is to foster competitive youth swimming and to provide instruc-tion in competitive swimming skills in a supportive atmosphere with good sportsmanship that is conducive to proper social and physical development of our youth.

Junior Guard

The Junior Lifeguard/Water Safety Instructor Aide program offers the opportunity to learn and practice swimming and life guarding skills, as well as the opportunity to become certified in Community First Aid and CPR.

Jr. Lifeguards/WSI Aides can earn community service hours by helping the lifeguard staff or aiding swim lesson instruction.

We will also have an End-of-Summer party for Jr. Lifeguards and WSI Aides where they well receive recognition for their service.

Course Prerequisites:• 15 years of age by the end of the class • Pass a pre-course screening in swimming skills: * 300 yard continuous swim * Tread water for 2 minutes only using legs. Candidates must either hold hands out of water or place them under arm pits. * Timed Skill: Swim 20 yards, retrieve 10 lb brick from 10 ft depth, swim back 20 yards, and climb out of pool without using a ladder or steps in 1 minute 40 seconds. Certification Requirements: Demonstrate competency in all required skills * Demonstrate competency in the three final skill scenarios * Correctly answer at least 80% of the questions in each of the four sections of the final written examinations.

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course is to teach lifeguard candidates the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare candidates to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies. The course includes Lifeguarding, CPR/AED and First Aid. Upon suc-cessful completion of the Lifeguard Training course, each participant will receive the American Red Cross Universal Certificates; indicatingLifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR/AED for Lifeguards that are valid for 2 years.

The Bryan Regional Athletic Complex hosts B, C, D, Church and Coed softball leagues. The season consists of 8 games and a double elimination tournament. All games are played at Bryan Regional Athletic Complex. For moreinformation, call (979) 209-5203.

This camp promotes health and self esteem, while keeping the children active through exciting games, field trips and swim days. A new theme will lay out the activities each week, as your child learns skills such as first-aid, leadership and fitness. Each child will have the opportunity to earn up to 12 badges by mastering certain skills and attitudes throughout the summer. With the help of our experienced staff Camp H.E.R.O. will show your child how to be a hero now.
