Interested in Joining?The Saratoga Youth Commission is comprised of eleven middle and high school residents who are appointed by the Saratoga City Council for two-year terms. As leaders of their community, the

commissioner’s role is to serve as a liaison between the young citizens of Saratoga and the City

Council. In addition, commissioners plan, promote and participate in community service, educational

and fun activities for the City’s youth. If you are interested in joining the Youth Commission, applications will be available through May 2014.

Wild CoyotesGet WILD this summer and explore the adventures at camp Wild Coyotes! Each week, campers will experience days filled with fun activities that will engage the minds and bodies of all participants. Wild Coyotes will exercise their imaginations and socialization skills through interactive games, songs, food projects, arts & crafts, enrichment projects, and hanging out with friends. Campers will also take field trips twice a week! On Wednesdays, campers will spend the majority of the day at Wildwood Park and on Thursdays, they will venture to fun locations in the local area. One snack a day will be provided to each camper but please send your child with a sack lunch, water, and pre-applied sunscreen every day. Leadership In TrainingThe Leadership-In-Training (LIT) program is designed for mature and enthusiastic teens who are looking to develop their leadership skills. This week long training will consist of fundamentals and techniques needed to be a leader/role model. LIT’s will learn how to teach arts & crafts, lead songs & games, prepare snacks, and present themselves professionally. Additionally, LIT’s will be CPR trained and certified during this week. This program provides an excellent foundation in developing leadership skills, responsibility, and self-esteem. A fun group field trip to Ragin Waters will take place on Friday! Following the completion of training, LIT’s will assist the Recreation Leaders throughout the summer to gain more leadership experience. All students who sign up for this program are guaranteed volunteer hours throughout the summer. This experience will count toward community service hours. Any volunteer who wishes to work with the Recreation Department during the summer months, are required to register in the LIT program. Rockin’ Kidz Drama CampAct, Sing and Create! The Rockin’ Kidz program provides a positive and encouraging curriculum which gives your child the opportunity to develop his or her dramatic arts skills. Children will explore the world of theater, story- telling through song, acting for the stage, make props, costumes, set design, improvisation, and performance technique! No experience necessary. Each session concludes with a different theatrical performance; in which, we invite parents, siblings, friends to attend the last day of the session. Wear comfortable clothing. Please bring a sack lunch; snack will be provided. Materials fee of $15, payable to “Rockin Kidz,” due at first class. Instructor: Tiffany Petrossi has studied drama and music at the University of Oregon, A.C.T. (American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco) and the GATE theater program in NYC. She currently enjoys working as a music/drama teacher in local elementary schools. She has a passion for the Dramatic Arts and is thrilled to be directing the Rockin’ Kidz program. Our philosophy is that play is of utmost importance, encouraging the child to be involved in what interests them most. Activities are developed around the changing seasons integrating the environment, world cultures, & traditions through songs, games, cooking projects & outdoor play. Terrific Tiny Tennis classes consist of six 40 minute lessons. Students provide own rackets. In case of rain, check with the

instructor at the court. If at any time the instructor is absent, report to the next scheduled lesson for makeup date. Make up lessons will

be forwarded to the next normal meeting day and time. However, Sundays may be used at the instructor’s discretion.

If an earlier class is postponed due to rain, all the following classes may also be postponed that day even if the courts become dry.

Basic Horsemanship A beginner level class, learn about safety, parts of the horse, horse psychology, parts of the saddle, markings of the horse, evolution and history of the horse, how to saddle and unsaddle, grooming, leading, mounting and dismounting. CPRStudents will receive a two-year certification card (must pass a skills test) for Adult, Child & Infant CPR & the AED. These skills-based classes are instructed by Santa Clara County Fire Department Personnel. Students will learn the new ‘science of CPR’, how to aid someone who is choking, & training on how to use an AED device. Safe SittersSafeSitters is a training program for students who want to be childcare providers. This course provides hands-on training in preventing and responding to emergencies, with an emphasis on first aid skills. This course covers infant care, planning age appropriate activities as well as how to manage discipline issues. Students are also taught how to recognize child abuse and handle inappropriate adult behavior. This program is designed for mature-minded students who are serious about developing his or her child care abilities. Adult TennisNOVICE: For beginning to low intermediate players. Develop the essential techniques with emphasis on control, depth, & direction. Lessons will also incorporate basic strategy & tactics. Two courts, grouped by ability. INTERMEDIATE: For players who are consistent on slow to medium paced shots but needs to develop more spin, power, &/or variety. Basic to advanced shots, strategy, & tactics will be introduced & reinforced by performance enhancing drills.IMPORTANT INFORMATION:Adult classes of 3-8 students will consist of six hours of instruction. Classes of two students will be converted into four lessons. Students provide own rackets. In case of rain, check with the instructor at the court. Throw in some burnouts, optional sprawls & plyometrics & we’ve got ourselves a class that will challenge all fitness levels! The demonstrations by an attentive coach will educate & motivate the beginners while the more experienced are pushed to their very limits! The Saratoga Senior Center offers a wide variety of health and social services, classes, presentations, entertainment, and special events. We are able to share vital information through our partnerships with many local agencies. All pro-grams, classes, and events are open to the community (must be 18-years or older) and membership is not required to attend. Please stop by our front office and pick up a current copy of our monthly newsletter or go to our website at www.sascc.org.

WEDNESDAY LUNCH PROGRAM: A delicious & nutritious lunch, catered by local restaurants, is served every Wednesday at noon. Following the meal, enjoy either a fabulous speaker or some great entertainment. Reservations are required; please call 408.868.1257 before noon on Tuesday. COUNSELING SERVICES-John F. Kennedy University Community Counseling Center offers our members 50-minute counseling ap-pointment for $15 a session. The sessions will take place every Monday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. To schedule an appointment with Bob, please contact JFK Counseling Center @ 408.524.4900. All phone messages are confidential.

HEALTH INSURANCE COUNSELING AND ADVOCACY PROGRAM (HICAP)- Counselors who assists seniors with Medicare, supple-ments to Medicare, long-term care, and managed care insurance plans. Offered on the 4th Tuesday of every month 10:00 a.m.– 12:00 p.m. Must call for an appointment. Free to all members of the Senior Center.

HEARING SCREENING-Appointments are 15-minutes. John Beckwith, Hearing Aid Dispenser, will be able to test hearing, check ears for wax, clean hearing aids, and answer any questions about hearing and balance. To schedule an appointment, call 408.868.1257. Unless noted otherwise, hearing appointments are scheduled on the 1st Friday of every month from 9:00-10:30 a.m. Free to all members of the Senior Center.

ORTHOPEDIC TECHNICIAN– Certified Orthopedic Technician, Cheryl Geraci provides a one hour trimming of nails and/or shaving of calluses, a soothing foot soak, and a relaxing massage. For an appointment or current pricing, please call 408.266.3668 (FOOT).

The Adult Care Center provides a structured activity program for less independent adults in the surrounding areas. Activities, just to name a few, are table games, word games, adaptive exercise and art. A freshly prepared lunch is served daily along with snacks. The central focus is to en-courage socialization among peers, thereby reducing the isolation associated with older adults. Of equal importance, is providing respite resources and support to families and caregivers. We are VA approved.

We encourage families interested in our program to schedule a time for their family member to come for a complimentary “visit day”.

There is more to Napa than just wine tasting! Welcome to the FIRST culinary walking tour in Wine Country, for those who know that California cuisine is just as sought after as its wine. This tour will delight your taste buds as you explore

revitalized downtown Napa with fellow foodies. We'll share the fascinating history of this beautiful riverfront town, one where celebrity chefs intermingle with organic farmers and boutique winemakers. This 3 hour walking tour of the 1 mile,

flat route of downtown Napa includes 7 stops with tasting at each! Don’t miss the opportunity to begin at this tour the new Oxbow Market, where a seasonal bounty of California specialty foods and produce awaits you.

Luncheon at Kincaids in Jack London Square & visit to Oakland Zoo Thursday, May 22nd


Our day will start with a bus ride to the famous Jack London Square where we will have lunch at Kincaid’s Classic American Dining. Lunch options include a choice of Caesar Salad or New England Clam Chowder as a starter, Roasted Chicken Dijon, Steamed Manilla Clams, Frilled Salmon with Fettuccine, or Smoked Sirloin Chateau Salad as an entrée,

along with Key Lime Pie or Seasonal Sorbet for dessert. Following lunch, we will head to the Oakland Zoo for an afternoon exploring. Nestled in the rolling hills, the Oakland Zoo itself sits inside 525-acre Knowland Park and is home

to more than 600 native and exotic animals.

Dolphin Charters Napa River Cruise Tuesday, June 24th


A cruise along the Napa River is like a voyage into the past. Participants view the historic Vallejo and Mare Island wa-terfronts and then enter a different world of vineyards and backwater homes and marinas. Some of the largest contiguous

marshes in California are located along the Napa River and stretch west toward the Petaluma River. Participants will learn about riparian life and marsh life and its importance to the health of the SF Bay. After the cruise we will be escorted by a docent to have lunch at the Mare Island museum/visitors center. Following lunch, we will enjoy a tour of the island, learning about its history and assets going back to the Civil Way. Sites include the stately Colonial Revival era mansions

of Officer’s Row, St. Peter’s Chapel with its Tiffany stained glass windows, the Artifact Museum and much more!

Refunds & TransfersIn the event a participant chooses to withdraw from an activity, transfers or refunds will be granted according to the following criteria:

REFUNDS & TRANSFERS FOR CLASSESWith a ONE WEEK notice before a class begins, you may request & receive a refund, less a $15 processing fee per person for each activity. If you are unhappy with a class that you have attended, let us know right away. If you have attended the first two classes & we cannot resolve your concerns, we will send you a prorated refund, less a $15 processing fee per person for each activity. If you choose to transfer (must be within the quarter), the full amount of your enrollment fee will apply to any course you select. Refunds or transfers are not available once the class or program has met three times.

If the trip or City-conducted camp is canceled by the Recreation Department, you will receive a full refund or you can request to transfer to another activity. For a trip, if a waiting list exists, you may receive a refund, minus a $15 processing fee.

REFUNDS & TRANSFERS FOR CAMPSWith more than 14 days’ notice, refund of camp fee less a $15 process fee plus 20% of the camp fee per person for each activity. You may transfer to another camp within the season and the full amount of your enrollment fee will apply to any camp you select. Refunds do not apply to City-coordinated camps.
