MEET MARK O’CONNOR: FIDDLER, COMPOSER, AND VIOLIN VIRTUOSO - $10All Ages, and musicians, bring your stringed instruments!Chautauqua Community House | July 13 | 11am-12:30pm

Grammy® winning composer and violin/fiddle virtuoso Mark O’Connor will discuss and demonstrate his American style of string playing, improvisation, and the process of composition. Sure to both educate and entertain, young musicians particularly will benefit from his warm and engaging interaction with his audiences. Observers welcome, and appropriate for elementary through adult musicians, with some group playing possible.

Join LA’s renowned Street Drum Corps for a high-energy, interactive, educational street drumming experience! Using found objects ranging from trash cans to vehicle parts, this workshop will inspire and engage audience members as they’re guided through the creative process of making music. Then come and see this amazing ensemble perform at Chautauqua at 7:30pm. (Workshop participants will receive a 25% discount on concert tickets).

IMPROV WORKSHOP WITH TIME 4 THREE - $10Ages 15 and up, and bring your instruments!Chautauqua Community House | August 1 | 11am-12:30pm

Join the passionate and engaging members of Time for Three as they dem-onstrate techniques for successful improvisation, and invite participants to join them in experimenting with them using well known tunes. Observers also welcome!

A CONVERSATION WITH TIME 4 THREE - FREEAges 18+ | Chautauqua Community House | August 1 | 4-5:30pm

This casual gathering includes refreshments and informal conversation with the artists from Time for Three, whose members–Zachary (Zach) De Pue, violin; Nicolas (Nick) Kendall, violin; and Ranaan Meyer, double bass–carry a passion for improvisation, composing and arranging, all prime elements of the ensemble’s playing.

EARLY CHILDHOODAll children are naturally musical! We have a range of offerings for the earliest beginners through age 6. While your child is having fun singing, listening, moving, and playing rhythm instruments, he/she is also developing an understanding of specific musical concepts such as high/low, fast/slow, soft/loud, steady beat, and beginning pitch matching, as well as valuable social and concentration skills. Now’s the time to give your child the best musical beginning!

This semi-staged concert for families features selections from Beethoven’s greatest compositions, including Symphony No. 5. After each concert, join us on the lawn for a Music Fair where kids meet costumed characters, try the instrument petting zoo, enjoy face painting, balloon tying, snacks and more! Family Fun Concerts give younger children a chance to meet different sections of the orchestra each week, as small ensembles perform short, informal 45-minute musical programs. Meet the musicians and their instruments following each performance. (Free for children enrolled in Meet the Instruments.) July 1: WOODWINDS: The Fool of the World and the Flying ShipMembers of the woodwind section tell a musical story with an eccentric and magical cast of characters. July 15: BRASS: Ballet & BrassBallet Nouveau student dancers join members of the brass section to perform excerpts from The Nutcracker and other dance music. ELEMENTARY SCHOOLAt this age, children begin to discern and appreciate higher level musical concepts, such as dissonance, and rhythmic and melodic memory improves. This is a great time to jump into participatory classes like Classically Kids, and also the time when most children land on a favorite musical instrument for individual study. We have some special offerings for singers as well!

July 6: Inner Journeys: Music and EmotionHow do composers use music to express their deepest and most powerful feelings? World-famous soprano Jessica Rivera will sing and talk about some of her favorite riveting music. July 13: String SensationsCelebrate CMF’s Violin Virtuoso week with Norwegian violinist Henning Kraggerud, and get up close and personal with a violin! July 20: Call of the Wild: Music and DanceMusic and dance have been connected for centuries. Work with a ballet dancers to find out how composer Igor Stravinsky forever altered that relationship with his riotous Rite of Spring. July 27: Stories in SongComposers the world over use music to tell stories. Learn how Kelly O’Connor uses her rich voice to convey the exotic music of Ravel, and find out the story behind Mahler’s “Tragic” Symphony. August 3: Simply Fantastic - Times Three!Learn about Berlioz’s Fantastic Symphony and then meet three fantastic musicians from the trio, Time for Three. Be surprised by what you’ll experience!

Kids are now naturally developing finer technical and musical skills in their individual study, as well as creative skills such as improvisation and composition, and collaborative skills for playing in small group ensembles. This is the time to let the inner star shine!
