Antique malls are rather like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates: you never know whatyou're going to get. Some antique malls are dirty and poorly lit, some are craft shops dis-guised as antique dealers, and some have the same pawed-over and over-priced merchan-dise that they had five years ago.Fortunately for the thousands of would-be customers traveling I-77 through Yadkin

County, the Antique Mall of the Foothills in Jonesville is one of the best antique malls youare likely to find. Located just a spit an' holler from the interstate, this antique mall isclean, well-lit, and considering the fact that, according to the owner, they boast over 120different vendors, thoughtfully laid out.Occupying around 10,000 square feet—all on one level, which makes the entire store

handicap accessible—Antique Mall of the Foothills has vendors selling old tools, jewelry, postcards and other ephemera, soft drink bottles (what we always called "pop" bottles),clocks, toys, records, furniture, advertising signs, books, records, coins, license plates, cookie jars, glassware—well, you get the idea. If it's old and collectible, you are likely tofind it here. In the back, in the corner (but not in the dark), I was amazed to find a rackof vintage clothing. Alas, I didn't see that Nehru jacket I have been pining for, but youcan't have everything. While waiting at the checkout counter, I casually flipped through their guest register

and was again amazed (that word again—maybe they should change their name toAmazing Antique Mall of the Foothills) to see a comment thanking the staff for lettingtheir dog enter the store. A pet-friendly antique mall? Yep, but I would think twice beforeI took my pet chimp in there (not to mention a pet bull, because they do stock some real-ly nice china).

Best of all, not only is this mall pet-friendly, it's human friendly, as well, with a knowl-edgeable, helpful and just downright professional staff. All in all, the Antique Mall of theFoothills is not only worth a stop, it's deserving of being a destination in itself.

SUMMER HEAT!HEAT STROKE is a very important issue concerning

your pets health. Heat stroke is otherwise known as heatexhaustion, sunstroke or hyperthermia, which is commonand a lethal problem. The progression of clinical signs starts with weakness

and blank/dazed expression, vomiting, diarrhea, musclecramping and shaking, eventual collapse and death. If youthink your pet is experiencing heat stroke, the best first aidis to submerge him in cool water then seek treatment.Prevent this by providing plenty of fresh, cool water dailyand a well-ventilated shelter.Animals should NEVER be locked in a car even with the

window cracked, or tied up in a yard or pen without

shade. If you suspect you pet may have become overheat-ed, please call your veterinarian immediately. If your pet is accompanying you on a trip by air, arrange

your hot weather flights for either early morning or lateevening when the air is cooler. Awaiting boarding out onthe hot pavement in the confines of his shipping crate, hecan develop heat stroke rapidly. In addition, heatstroke can occur when animals are con-

fined in a poorly ventilated garage or kennel on a hot day, confined in the hot sun without proper shade, ventilation,or access to plenty of fresh water, or are over-exercised inthe heat of the day.Dogs left chained out in the yard are prime candidates

for heat exhaustion. They may become entangled andunable to get to shade or water. Struggling with entangle-ment or fighting off other animals speeds the processthrough overexertion.Animals suffering from heat exhaustion need IMME-

DIATE EMERGENCY TREATMENT! Survival largely depends on the duration and degree of

heatstroke. Since the disease progresses rapidly, the speedwith which the pet is cooled down and brought to the clin-ic for emergency treatment is critical. However, complica-tions develop so rapidly, even emergency measures maynot save the heatstroke victim. The best cure is prevention!

A Statewide Disposal Ban on Computer Equipment andTelevisions goes into Effect July 1, 2011. “Computer equipment” includes laptops, desktops,

monitors, printers, scanners, and peripherals such as miceand keyboards. Details on the Session Law 2010-67 thatestablishes the disposal ban can be found at: http://por-tal.ncdenr.org/web/wm/sw/electronicsBusinesses have a variety of options for recycling elec-

tronics in North Carolina:• Many counties offer electronics collection services that

are open to business customers. • Dedicated electronics recycling companies and gen-

eral recycling and hauling companies also offer elec-

tronics collection services. • Many electronics manufacturers and retail vendors pro-

vide take-back recycling options for electronic products. • Some non-profit and charitable agencies in North

Carolina also welcome discarded electronics from com-mercial sources. A comprehensive list of recycling options for business

can be found at: http://www.p2pays.org/electronics/busi-ness-opportunities.aspThe disposal ban helps divert highly usable materials to a

growing electronics recycling industry in the state. NorthCarolina is home to a number of major electronics proces-sors with investments in plant and equipment exceeding

$50 million that employ over 300 North Carolinians. Enforcement of the disposal ban will focus on disposal

facilities such as landfills and transfer stations. For more information on Session Law 2010-67, contact
