elder update
Our Christian life is meant to be lived in community – not in isolation. Community doesn’t really happen during the Sunday morning worship service – it happens in an ABF, in a small group, by serving along side of another, and it happens in our homes.
Currently, our Sugar Grove campus is made up of 260 families and singles, which represent a total of over 800 people. Many of these people have not had an opportunity to really connect and integrate into our family – some because they are new, but there are also plenty of people who have been here for years who have just not connected.
It takes effort on the part of all of us to genuinely weave people into the fabric of our family. We all need to be proactive in opening up our hearts, our homes and our friendship groups
in order to become a true family to our growing church body. Please pray about a few people that you could get to know better, and invite them to something fun but simple, like burgers at your home or a pizza picnic at the park. Consider making
this a new priority – for the next 4 weeks and beyond!
Willing to reach out, but not quite sure who to reach? Why not simply
ask God for an opportunity at church on Sunday to invite someone – or if you like to plan ahead, look through your church photo directory and ask God to direct you to someone to invite – and don’t feel like you always need to reach out to someone that is the same age or lifestage as you! If we all reach out to a few people, think what a difference that will make in all of our lives!
We’ve been told that we’re great at the smile and hand-shake…
…but that it’s tough to get plugged into the family
beyond that.

Servantworks, which reaches out to street women in Thailand with the gospel, is building ministry space to help with their Narimon gift-party distribution (which sells the hand-made items from the women in Thailand) for their new ministry headquarters in Aurora.
Take some time to impact the spiritual kingdom this summer. If you are willing and able to paint, clean, move office furniture, swing a hammer or turn a screwdriver, and have a desire to serve, Servantworks would love your help in furthering our mission!
Please contact Yvonne Heller at [email protected] or 630-605-0043 to coordinate efforts on their work project. Be sure to tell her you’re from Village Bible Church!

men’s ministry
Does the church cater to women, children and the elderly by creating a safe, predictable environment. Do we alienate risk-taking men?Is it possible to “adjust the thermostat” to let men lead; give them challenging tasks; and let them discover truth for themselves? We think so! Join us for discussion and debate! Contact Scott Capp for more details. [email protected]

This is a great oppor-tunity to get out of your comfort zone and serve people who are hurting and need someone to show them compassion. Hesed House is located at 659 S River St. in Aurora. forever young | parent/child dedication
forever young
Forever Young is a gathering of people 50 and older who are striving to have fun together while serving the Lord with their lives. Single or married – all are invited. (And if you’re not 50 but are married to someone who is – then you’re in!)
June 26 Wheaton Evangelical Free ChurchMeet at VBC at 5 p.m.
Children don’t come with manuals telling us exactly how to keep them running for 250,000 miles. While we don’t have a manual, God does give us principles by which to raise the child that we have been entrusted with.
Participating in the Parent and Child Dedication involves being committed to God’s values. Whether this is your first child or your tenth, life will change in every aspect. Time will be stretched and priorities will be increasingly more difficult to maintain. Life will quickly show us what we value as important simply because we won’t have time or energy to do the extraneous things. Come allow us to encourage you to focus on God’s values as you raise your child.

REFUGEE • Back-2-SchoolRefugee children arrive in the United States ev-ery year seeking safety, peace, and a new place to call home. They come from very different places and cultures. They feel different from the other kids in their neighborhoods and schools. You can give them the tools they need to succeed AND help them fit in with their classmates. The gift of one backpack for one refugee child can make all the difference in the world. You can change the life of one refugee child, one backpack at a time.
1.Buy a backpack for a refugee student.2. Fill your backpack with new, age-appropriate items
from the “10 essential school supplies” list. If able, add some “optional” items from the list as well.
3. Write an optional welcome note and/or include a photo of yourself and/or your family.
4. Please donate $5 or more for each Back-2-School pack you fill to help cover expenses.
5.Bring your completed backpack to VBC by August 7.

missionaries
Our summer
missionary of the month of June is the Walsh family, who are our missionaries in Port Alsworth, Alaska. James and Sharon have been serving at Tanalian Bible Camp for 20 years and James also as pastor at Lake Clark Bible Church. Their prayer re-quest is to continue to make sure that all the camp weeks are staffed, especially High School and Teen Pursuit weeks at the beginning of June. This summer, Village is again sending a team to serve at the camp for short-term mis-sions from July 1 through July 12. This is during the primary age camp, which are the third and fourth grade age children. They will be assisting the students and staff of Tanalian Bi-
ble Camp by using their spiritual gifts and talents of service, teaching, camp-counseling, cooking, music, technology and “whatever it takes” to share the love of Jesus.

For the month of July, we have the Kehns, who are serving with Juna Amag-ara Ministries in Uganda. We will be sending two short-
term mission teams, one from June 29-July 13 and the other from August 6-August 20. During this time they will be en-couraging the Kehns in their discipleship and orphan ministries, working with schools of Juna Amagara and sharing Bible stories and testimonies in public schools. Again they will be sharing their spiritual gifts and talents and doing “whatever it takes.”
For the month of August, we want to lift up the family of Phil and Sara Nickels, serv-ing with the Rafiki Foundation in Tanzania. They will be in the U.S. from June 24 through August 2, attending training at the Rafiki Home Office and visiting many of their supporters. They praise and give thanks for God’s provision of all their financial needs, for expanded ministry to more resident chil-dren and day students, for good health and safety. Their prayer request is for final travel details and scheduling to go smoothly, for their co-workers as they cover all the bases while they are gone, and for a refreshing and joyful time with family and friends.

library
The VBC library has added many new items to its collection recently. In fact over 200 new items have been added this past year! Make sure you take time this summer to stop in and see what we have for you to enjoy!
In this new series Joel C. Rosenberg continues with his trademark style of writ-ing edge-of-your-seat fiction that reads like tomorrow’s headlines.
As the apocalyptic leaders of Iran call for the annihilation of Israel and the United States, CIA operative David Shirazi is sent into Tehran with one objective: use all means necessary to disrupt Iran’s nuclear weapons program—without leaving American finger-prints and without triggering a regional war.
After a daring escape from Ravens-head Prison, Sam finds herself in worse trouble trying to outrun the relentless wardens. But help is on the way – kind of. Henry, janitor for the City of Refuge Guide Service, is unex-pectedly thrust into the line of duty when all the trained guides are called out on other missions. As he sets out on his long-awaited first assign-ment, he gets more adventure than he bargained for. Will the enthusiastic but awkward amateur guide persuade Sam to trust him before it’s too late?

Treasures of the North – Grace Hawkins flees north during the Alaskan gold rush to escape an arranged marriage with a sinister man. Will her new relationship with a young ship owner be threatened when her furious fiancé tracks her down?
Ashes and Ice – Heartbroken by loss, Karen Pierce is bound by a promise to watch over two young adults in her care. Together they journey north to the gold fields with the determined Adrik Ivankov as their guide. Will Karen find her way back to her once solid-faith...and into Adrik’s arms?
Rivers of Gold – Separated from her travel companions and presumed dead, Miranda Colton finds herself under the protection of Teddy Davenport. Though grateful for his help, Miranda longs to find her friends and continue north to the gold fields. As her friendship with Teddy blossoms, Miranda struggles over conflicting desires... until a menacing force from the past threatens to destroy everything she holds dear.
Next to the Bible, no other works have had more impact on believers than these Christian classics. Narrated by Max McLean, this outstanding collection includes Augustine’s Conversion, Martin
Luther’s Here I Stand, John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress, Jonathan Edwards’s Sinners in the Hands of an
Angry God, and George Whitefield’s The Method of Grace.
Great for summer road trips!

PREPARING FOR VACATION
Keep God FirstThe faithful Christian is one who ap-proaches summertime and vacation time with a spiritual perspective, remembering to “set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” – Colossians 3:2
First, a faithful Christian supports the work of the local church by praying, serving, and giving of their time, talents and treasure (even during vacation). If you serve in a ministry, have you made sure that you have a replacement during your vacation? And how about your financial giving?
“Honor God with everything you own; give Him the first and the best.” - Proverbs 3:9
There is no exemption for vacations in that verse. Did you remember to give your tithe and offering before you left on vacation? You may be gone, but the spiritual needs of people continue in your absence. (You can even schedule a contribution to be made automatically while you’re gone at www.villagebible.org/give.)
Second, a faithful Christian remembers that a vacation is a break from the normal pace of life – not an escape from the things of God.
“Your faithfulness endures to all generations… I will never forget thy precepts…” – Psalm 119:90, 93
A wise father will continue to guide his family toward the Lord, even on a vacation. If you pray for your meals at home, shouldn’t you pray for your meals elsewhere? And on Sun-day, don’t sleep in or head to the beach early, but rather find a local church to visit where you can praise the name of the God who has blessed you so abundantly. Children need to see spiritual consistency and adults need it, as well. (Plus, you just might gain some ideas that you can bring back to Village and share here!)
Be Refreshed in the LordSummertime and vacations can be tremendous morale boosters and times of refreshment for the Christian who remains faithful to the Lord.
“I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure.” – Psalm 16:8-9
