Strathcona Centennial ExpeditionJuly 17 to August 17In July 1910, to formalize the boundaries for Strathcona Park, Minister of Lands, Price Ellison set off to explore the area, departing Campbell River on July 7, 1910 with a party of twenty three. Travelling up Campbell River’s lake chain, Ellison and his party climbed Crown Mountain July 29, 1910. They re-supplied at Bottle Lake, then followed the 1896 Bolton route over Price Pass to meet a Port Alberni party who then led the way down the Drinkwater Creek, along Great Central Lake, and back to Port Alberni. Ellison submitted his report on the expedition to Cabinet, and on March 1st, 1911 Strathcona Park was officially legislated.

In July 2010, the anniversary of this historic trip is being re-enacted, by Proclamation, and will serve as the inaugural event for “Parks 100”in 2011, the centennial celebration of Strathcona Park & the BC Parks system. The re-enactment will follow Ellison’s footsteps through Strathcona Park, from Campbell River to Port Alberni, including an ascent of Crown Mountain. The overland route will commence at Buttle Lake and travel down the Della Falls Trail.

The Strathcona Centennial Expedition (www.sce2010.ca) has partnered with Alberni District Historical Society and the Alberni Valley Museum to support the exit segment of the expedition by hosting a celebratory party August 7, 7pm at the Museum. The expedition group will have paddled Great Central Lake to finish a strenuous & colourful two and a half week trek. They will arrive at the Museum to be greeted by local First Nations & civic officials. The next day they will meet the E &N train in Qualicum to travel the final leg of the expedition to Victoria.
