Teaching PointSee video upload on Dojo on this strategy GKR – (Getting Knowledge Ready)Choose Scaredy Monster Loses a Tooth by Meika Hashimoto from Epic! DO NOT READ THIS BOOK TODAY FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW.

Activities1. Press pause and look at the

front cover of the book and discuss the Title and picture. What do you see? Predict what you think the story will be about.

2. There is a white circle with a blue ring around it. Click and drag this to do a picture walk through the rest of the book. DO NOT PRESS PLAY OR IT WILL START READING THE BOOK TO YOU.

Students to complete the same activity as above but with a reader that they haven’t read.Listen to your child read the book.Upload a photo of your reading diary from last week.

Teaching PointWrite an acrostic poem about your mother. (See example)

ActivityChildren to write an acrostic poem with words to describe their mum. 1) Write the letters

underneath each other for your mother’s name.

2) Using the first letter on each line, write a word to describe your mother or something she likes.

3) Draw a border picture to decorate your acrostic poem.

Teaching PointBecoming familiar with the long a sound. For example, ‘ai’ as in snail, ‘ay’ as in hay and a_e as in cake. Sound Waves Unit 13.

Activity1. Sing the Sound Waves song and

do the actions (see instructions below for where to find this).

2. Write down as many words as you can where the ‘ai, ay & a_e’ sound is being made.

3. Complete the segmenting activity online. Students first say the sounds in the word and put in number of sounds. They then type in the letter/s they hear in that sound (see instructions below on how to access this). If you cannot segment online, have students copy segmenting sheet from resources below. The answers to the segmenting are also attached.

Extra Activity- Write the words you came up with in your ABC Book and draw a picture for each one.

Warm Up ActivityRoll a dice or flip a numbered playing card. First to call out the partner to 10 gets a point e.g. roll a 6 and the child says 4 as quickly as they can. First to 10 points wins!Teaching PointStudents are learning to subtract using the counting back strategy.ActivityShow the students how to solve a subtraction by counting backwards using concrete materials. Watch video posted on Dojo class story.Steps:1) Show child the subtraction equation 10 – 3 = 7. Read it to them

and get them to read it back. Point out the symbols and what they mean (- means that we are going to take away or subtract from the largest number and = means that both sides of the equation equal the same thing).

2) Collect any concrete materials that make the first number 10. Have the students place these in a line in front of them.

3) Explain that we are going to count backwards the number of places that the second number in the equation tells us to (3). Have students count back the spots, so they know where to stop.

4) He students take away the three objects counting backwards from 10 e.g. 9, 8, 7. Explain that the number they say is the amount of items left.

5) Once they have counted backwards three times they will have 7 left. Explain that this is the answer and show them. Have the students write the following equations to find the answers: 5 – 3 = ?, 8 – 2 = ?, 10 – 6 = ?, 11 – 5 = ?

If these are too simple for you child make them more difficult by using larger numbers. If the equations above are too challenging just practise counting backwards from different starting points.

Teaching PointSee video upload on this strategy Spinner Spider – Text to Self Connections.Text to Self connections are connections made between things that are happening or seen in the book and the lives of students. e.g. When you read the three little pigs last week there could be the connection of 3 brothers in your family or seeing pigs at a farm.

Activity1. Read Scaredy Monster Loses a

Tooth by Meika Hashimoto from Epic!

2. Following the instructions on the video, make some connections between the story (text) and yourself.

3. Draw a picture of part of the book that reminds you of something in your life.

See activity sheet below.

Students to complete the same activity as above but with a reader that they haven’t read.Listen to your child read the book.

Teaching PointHandwriting- how to correctly form the lowercase and capital ‘Jj’.

Lowercase ‘ j ’ 1. Always start on the first dotted

line.2. Go down under the line and curve

around, stopping at the dotted line below the solid line so that your letter has a body and tail.

3. Put a dot above the top of the j.4. Have the students say, “Down,

curve around and a dot” each time they practise writing this letter.

Capital ‘J’ 1. Always start at the second dotted

line.2. Go down and curve around,

stopping on the solid line so that your letter has a head and body.

3. Have the students say, “Down, curve around” each time they practise writing this letter.

ActivityComplete pages 10 & 11 in the Handwriting book.Extra Activity- practise writing your ‘Jj’ in your writing book placing letters on the correct lines. (See example below)

Teaching PointWriting ‘ay’ and ‘a_e’ for the long a sound.

Explain to the students that sometimes instead of writing ‘ai’ for the long a sound we can write it using ‘ay’ or ‘a_e’.Refer to the words that you came up with yesterday and circle the words where the long a sound is being written as ‘ay’ or ‘a_e’

ActivityStudents complete questions 3 & 4 in their Sound Waves book, where they write ‘ay’ and ‘a_e’ for the long a sound.

Teaching PointStudents are learning to subtract using the count back strategy through a game with playdough as a model.Activity1. Show the students how to solve subtraction equations by

counting backwards using the uploaded video ‘Playdough Smash’.

Steps:1. Show child the subtraction equation 10 – 3 = 7. Read it to them

and get them to read it back. 2. Make 10 playdough balls and place them in a line.3. Explain that we are going to count backwards the number of

places that the second number in the equation tells us to (3). Have the students show you the three balls they will smash so they know when to stop smashing.

4. Have the students smash the three playdough balls while counting backwards as they go e.g. (smash) 9, (smash) 8, (smash) 7.

5. Once they have counted backwards three times, smashing the three balls, they will have 7 left. Explain that this is the answer.

Have the students write the following equations and have them complete the steps above to find the answer:5-4=? 9-6=? 12-4=? 10-8=? 15-5=? 14-7=?

If your child is finding this too easy use larger numbers. If they are finding it too hard only use single digit numbers.

Upload a short video onto your child’s portfolio of them solving an equation using ‘Playdough Smash’.

How to make playdough if you don’t have it at home:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAIAm6BF0fs*Optional- Students can play the following game online to practise and revise their partners to 10.https://pbskids.org/curiousgeorge/busyday/ten/

Activity1. Select ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’

by Rebecca Hu-Van Wright on Epic. 2. Listen to the read aloud of the book

while trying to follow the text.3. Pause on page 9, focusing on the

words ‘valley’ and ‘absolutely’. Discuss what these words could mean e.g. valley means the low ground between two hills.

4. Pause on page 13 and focus on the word ‘headed’. Discuss what this word could mean.

5. Pause on page 21 and focus on the word ‘thunderous’. Discuss what this word means and ask why the author would have used this word to describe the troll’s voice.

Students to complete the same activity as above but with a reader that they haven’t read.Listen to your child read the book.

Teaching PointUsing adjectives to describe a troll.

Activity1. Using the prompts to the right of the

troll on the Wanted poster (see below), discuss the features you can see using interesting words to describe them.

2. In your ABC Book make a Wanted poster using the example below. Students to draw their own troll (or the troll from the story on Epic!) inside a box and colour it in.

3. Write a description of the troll’s appearance using interesting adjectives.

ActivityIn your Spelling book write each word (one word per line) that will be on your Spelling test this coming Friday.Next to each word, write a word that rhymes with it. Discuss with an adult before writing the rhyming word.

*Optional - Play the online Rhyming Words game in the Interactive Games and Activities section from Unit 13.

Teaching PointStudents are learning to subtract using the count back strategy.

Activity1. Watch the teacher video uploaded

to Dojo class story about using their fingers to count backwards.

2. Roll your own numbers. The largest number goes first in the subtraction equation and the smallest number is placed after the subtraction symbol.

3. Write your equation. 4. Then either use concrete materials,

your playdough (from the day before), fingers or counting backwards mentally to solve your subtraction equations.

5. Write your answer after you solve it.

Complete at least 5 different equations and write these into your 123 book under the heading ‘Subtraction’.

Activity1. Open ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’ by

Rebecca Hu-Van Wright on Epic 2. Press pause and gradually move the

white circle along to read the text. 3. Explain to the children that you are

going to deliberately make some mistakes while you read and that it is their job to let you know when they hear an error that needs to be fixed up.

4. Parent or carer to deliberately make at least one mistake on each page.

5. Read the whole book.

Students to read a reader that they haven’t read.Listen to your child read the book.

Teaching PointPut adjectives from the day before into sentences.

Activity1. Look at your Wanted poster from

yesterday. 2. Write at least 3 full sentences to

describe your troll using the adjectives (describing words) from your poster as well as any other interesting words that you can come up with (see example below).

Students to complete questions 1, 2, 5, 6 & 7 in their Sound Waves book.

Teaching PointStudents are learning to subtract by counting backwards on a number line.

ActivityHave the students watch the video uploaded to Dojo class story on how to solve subtraction equations by counting backwards using a number line.

Steps:1. Show child the subtraction equation 5 - 3 =?

Read it to them and get them to read it back.

2. Using the number line resource, model how to find the answer to the equation above by jumping backwards three numbers/spaces.

3. The number you land on is your answer.

Find the answers to the rest of the questions on the sheet. If you have a printed copy, glue it into your 123 Book. Otherwise, copy the number line and equation from the sheet into your 123 Book and solve them.

If your child finishes the sheet quickly get them to make their own number lines and generate subtraction equations using larger numbers.
