Aitik copper mine efficiency
Customer need
Boliden decided to modernize the entire mining operation of the Aitik copper mine, Sweden, to increase its production capacity and extend its life
ABB solution
Increased efficiency of the mine. Supplied 650 motors, 230 drives and variable-speed drives, two 22.5 MW gearless mill drives, two 2×5 MW dual pinion drive systems, four 1.4 MW permanent magnet motors, 23 distribution transformers, gas-insulated switchgear, a harmonic filter system, the Extended Automation System 800xA and a service contract
Customer value
Doubled production capacity to 36 million tons of ore per year
Extended the life of the mine to 2030
ABB gearless mill drives provide the huge capacity needed while keeping energy consumption low, and without reducing power quality
The solution made use of the IEC 61850 standard for integrated substation automation
Modernization of the mining operation

ABB in miningA responsible corporate citizen
Wind for prosperity - at the 2014 Global Green Growth Forum (3GF) in Copenhagen, Denmark, ABB announced an exciting new partnership with Vestas to bring affordable and sustainable electricity to communities that are energy-poor, but rich in untapped wind generation resources.
ABB is currently working with WWF on the Access to Electricity program in Tanzania, and individual initiatives in China, India and South Africa
ABB is an active member of the WBCSD Council, and participates in a number of initiatives including the Electrical Utilities Working Group.
The ABB Jürgen Dormann Foundation for Engineering Education provides scholarships to electrical engineering students in different parts of the world who can prove a high standard of academic achievement and who need financial support to be able to continue their studies.
