■ SUCCESS-STORY

A strategic need: reinforcing the security of France’s leading cable network

Optical fibre deployment expanded very quickly in the early 2000s. Security thus became a priority economic requirement for Numericable.

The operator’s aim was to remotely a n d c e n t r a l l y m a n a g e t h e supervision of all its technical sites to ensure tracking of movements and intervene rapidly in the event of an incident. These technical sites are nerve centres for the whole of the operator’s network and provide telephone and digital TV services every day to several million subscribers.

To prevent security flaws and guarantee an optimum level of traceability, Numericable decided to install a redundant automatic alarm reporting system.

Alcea answered this requirement by offering a customised, upgradable and innovative solution based on a protocol specially developed for Numericable.

Alcea adapts to Numericable’s needs “Alcea has been our security partner for more than ten years. We have a single tool which is upgraded in accordance with our needs and which enables us to supervise the whole territory. The Alcea solution is the perfect answer to our requirements because of its reliability and sturdiness , ” expla ins Bertrand Margerin, Group Technical Environment Manager at Numericable.

From 2004 onwards, Numericable wished to analyse its electricity consumption in order to control costs and prevent overload risks on strategic sites.

Alcea therefore upgraded the solution installed by adding an analogue supervision module which collects temperature and electricity consumption readings in real time.

Third area of supervision : commercial sites In parallel with this, Numericable p lanned to extend centra l ised supervision to its commercial buildings. Alcea assisted the operator in this new phase of deployment and equipped all its sites. The additional module supplied by Alcea was installed on a centralised se rve r , en ab l in g N um er icab le employees to use a single badge when they intervene on a technical or commercial site.

The partnership continues with video protection and biometrics In 2010, to guarantee the safety of personnel and reinforce the security of its premises, Numericable decided to equip itself with a video protection solution. Alcea proposed to interface a centralised video solution connected in real time on the existing access control system. “The Alcea video solution is a real asset for our supervision. Each region controls its sites, thus reducing the intervention time in the event of an incident. We began by installing a few cameras on our sensitive strategic sites, and then we decided to cover the whole territory. By the end of the year, we will have installed 60 cameras and this deployment will continue next year

Summary: Alcea’s strengths ● Customised solution: Alcea has developed a new protocol to manage alarm redundancy

Upward upgradability: the hardware remains compatible with the software,

whatever its version

● Adaptability of the equipment’s configuration to the type of site

● Multi-site centralised supervision and management: access control, intrusion detection and video surveillance.

because each new site is now equipped, ” comments Ber t rand Margerin. Lastly, to reinforce control of access to sensitive premises, known as “head ends”, Numericable is opting for biometrics. Alcea has thus incorporated biometric badge readers linked to the existing central system.

A dedicated technical and commercial team Alcea’s technical experts are fully versed in business needs in the telecom field. They can thus provide an optimum answer to all customer requirements and play a consulting role. “In addition to the quality of the solution offered, the durability of our partnership is based on the expertise and responsiveness of the people in contact with us who guarantee us flawless assistance throughout our projects,” concludes Bertrand Margerin.
