Case Study

St Ives in Cambridgeshire 100km north of London and it lies on the

A1123, 8km east of Huntingdon of Cambridge. St Ives is a riverside town. The surrounding rural area is mainly farmland

with many recent new housing developments. The population structure of the town is

changing due to the community ageing, and a large population of the working people are employed outside the town.

Housing in this area is affordable, but is still rising due to increase popularity. This is creating a gap between those people that can afford the rising costs of the houses and those that are on a low wage.

Recent retired people are moving here, which increase the demand for bungalows and small apartment blocks.

25% of St Ives working population now commute to London ever day by train, which takes an average 50 minutes from the station in Huntingdon.

The services in the area have also increased due to the population increase.

Pressure to increase the housing stock is becoming greater from commuters.
