The Plan TodayExtended substitute dominantsInterpolated Extended Substitute DominantsChord Scales Substitute DominantsChord Scales Extended Sub Dominants

Extended Dominant ReviewExtended dominants are dominant chords found on: strong stress pointsOr with a pattern of resolution down in perfect fifths to other dominantsSee page 31 of your Harmony 3 text

Extended Sub DominantsThe same characteristics apply for substitute dominant chords

Except the root motion is chromatic

AnalysisThe analysis for extended dominants is a solid arrowThe analysis for extended sub dominants is a broken arrowSee page 31 of your Harmony 3 text

The extended sub dominant may be interpolated prior to the resolution of an extended dominant(Placed in-between extended dominant chords)See page 32 of your Harmony 3 text

Related IIm7s can be included in extended sub dominant patterns.Further, a IIm7 may itself be the target chord of resolution.See page 32 of your Harmony 3 text

Chord Scales Substitute Dominants. Because sub dominants are not diatonic structures, their tensions and chord scales dont require diatonic orientation

Available tensions on any sub dominant are pitches a major 9th above a chord tone whether diatonic to the key or not

All sub dominant chords have available tensions 9, #11 and 13

Tensions related IIm7The available tensions for the related IIm7 chords of sub dominants are drawn from the key in which the chord is the diatonic IIm7

Lydian b7Used for:All sub dominantsbVII7IV7 in a major key contextExtended substitute dominant chords

Lydian b7 (#9)The only alterations normally available to a Lydian b7 chord scale occur on the sub V7, subV7/IV and subV7/VThis is because the chords of resolution have a major 3rd

Related IIm7 chord scalesDorian is used for any related IIm7 chord

This is because of its function as indicated by the solid or broken bracket

Other ConsiderationsIf movement from an extended dominant is down a perfect fifth, the following dominant will sound like another extended dominantIf movement from an extended dominant is down a half step, the following will sound like an extended substitute dominant

If movement from an extended substitute dominant is down a perfect fifth the following dominant will sound like another extended substitute dominantIf movement from an extended dominant is down a half step, the following dominant will sound like an extended dominant
