How was your

weekend?

What a great

class this is!

Its time to hit the target!

Background

Different countries have different types of governments

Some are very free with people making decisions for themselves

Other countries have their government control nearly everything

Government Involvement

Freedom vs. Security

Anarchy

The absence of government

No authority All people behave

as they wish They are guided by

norms and expectations

Pros and Cons of Anarchy

Positives No government

involvement No Taxes Can’t be forced into the

army

Ultimate freedom Do as you please! Nobody can tell you

what to do

Negatives No government

programs No tax money = no

services Army is necessary for

protection

No security Ultimate freedom = no

protection because everyone can do what they want

Authoritarian Government

Government makes all decisions

People have no say in the government

Ultimate authority

Pros and Cons

Positives Security is granted

Very strict punishment for breaking law

Government can make quick decisions Not worried about

what people think

Negatives No freedom

Strict punishments and strict controls of freedom grant security

Citizens have no say Decisions are

solely made by the government

Representative Governments Tend to lie in the

middle Government has

authority Can provide services

People have authority Guarantees them

certain rights

Democracy, Republic, Parliament

Authoritarianism

Anarchy

Representative Government

Activity

Compare this to your current teachers and other figures of authority

Start at a Representative Government and moved from there

Scale from -5 to 5 -5 means absolute chaos (You won’t have this) 5 means absolute authority (You are in trouble if

you breath too loud in this class) Write your numbers for each one in for the Y-

Coordinate

Things to Consider…Anarchy No rules whatsoever

except those created by the students

No punishments Students decide how

the class runs When using the hall

pass, the student takes it without asking

Authoritarianism Very strict rules that

were created by the teacher ahead of time

Very strict punishments Teacher decides how the

class runs When using the hall pass

the student must ask the teacher first, then sign out and has a set amount of time that they may have the pass

Types of Economies

Capitalism to Communism

Capitalism Government is

completely uninvolved in the economy

Products are produced and sold by individuals

People are motivated to run businesses by the hope of gaining profits

Competition!

Pros and Cons

Positives People are motivated

to work hard Harder workers equals

better production for the country

Competition is good for everyone! It drives prices down

and brings quality up

Negatives Without government

regulation many products would be dangerous FDA, USDA

Without help, many people will suffer in a pure capitalism In any competition

there are winners and losers

Controlled or Communist Economies

Government run economy Government tells people what to

produce and how much of it People are motivated to work by

threat; they can gain no profit by working harder

There is no competition!

Pros and Cons

Positives All people receive

equal treatment There are no individual

purchases

Basic needs are supposed to be met for all people It is supplied by the

government

Negatives That equal

treatment is equally bad! Not all A’s but all

C’s

There is no motivation to work hard! No incentives!

Mixed Economy

Responsibility for the economy is split between individuals and the government

Individuals are motivated by profits Government protects the consumers

(buyers) of products Middle ground between Capitalism

and Communism

Communism CapitalismMixed

Economy

Activity Part II

Again compare this to your figures of authority

Scale of -5 to 5 on the x-axis Began in the middle at Mixed Economy Once you are done plot your points using

your coordinate pairs Here is how you gauge the type of

economy…

How to JudgeCloser to Communism No motivation to work hard in

the class No rewards

Just completing work gets you most of your points

For group assignments all students get the same grade

Assignments are very rigid and must be completed a very specific way

Teacher assigns students their project topics

Closer to Capitalism Individual hard work =

success Rewarded for doing well

Completing work does not get you many points, quality is graded on most assignments

All work is graded individually, never as a group

Assignments are creative and can be completed many different ways

Teacher allows students to choose their project topics in some fashion
