New district designed on former agricultural land on the outskirts of the city of Angers, connected by the first ever tram line. Castro Dennisoff planners have developed an area covered with dense vegetation consisting of islands and strips of green integrating social and typological diversity while respecting the original woodland. The first buildings were completed in 2009 and construction continues today. www.lepuzzle.angers.fr/concevoir-un-quartier-durable/un-projet-deux-operations/le-plateau-des-capucins/index.html

Cité éducative Nelson Mandela, which includes a school district, a library, a kindergarten and a recreation center, opened its doors in September 2012. It has been designed to meet the 2005 Thermic Regulation energy level minus 20%.

The various buildings include 100 m² of photovoltaic panels, vegetal roof terraces and solar thermal panels for hot water production. To achieve the required performance and maintenance savings, an innovative software is being used which compensates for abnormal climate conditions. With this system, a “Canadian well” will be used to cool large spaces that are used in the summer (library and restaurants) http://www.lepuzzle.angers.fr/index.php?id=15

    www.nordicbusinesstravel.dk

Last major urban project in the city of Angers: the redevelopment of the banks of the Maine. The city has developed on both sides of the Maine, but the building of an urban motorway in the 1970s cut people off from access to the river. The project still under study will reconnect people with the river by allowing direct access to the urban area, by redeveloping the surroundings. http://www.angers-developpement.com/angers/grands-projets/les-grandes-lignes-d2019angers-rives-nouvelles

Afternoon on the Island of Nantes « l’Île de Nantes » http://www.iledenantes.com/en/

Located close to the historic heart of the city, the Island of Nantes is one of the rare urban renewal projects that can compete on a European level. It has been designed in accordance with the principles of sustainable development and regional balance. In contrast to other (often less successful) examples of urban renewal, the stakeholders at Island of Nantes have not ignored its industrial past. On the contrary, they embraced the strong industrial tradition, prevented the eviction of workers through substantial social housing regulations, supported promising national industries as well as local businesses, and opened up abandoned heavy industry sites as an attraction for residents and tourists. Besides the courageous implementation of sustainable development guidelines, Island of Nantes did not strive to impose a uniform style. Rather, it’s the coexistence of old industrial sites, spacious greenfields, and colourful buildings that characterises its revival.

Guided tour of « ÉCOQUARTIER BOTTIÈRE-CHÉNAIE» www.nantes-amenagement.fr/bottiere-chenaie/ The area more than exceeds the goals set by Nantes new “Local Urbanism Plan”: It has a density of up to 120 dwellings per hectare, it is socially mixed with 25% of housing earmarked as low cost rentals, and 45% of housing at below market price.

3500 people are expected to live there by 2013. The area is a 30 minute tram ride from the city center and developed in a vast public space. It also has a “Research Lab” that records different types of habitats.

"One of the challenges of the future neighbourhood is to halt the wandering of young families to the suburbs. The sale price of properties has deliberately been set to 20-25% below the market price, "says Jean-François Quays, responsible for operating “Nantes Development”

Welcome by Virginie Barre, Construction and Development Manager at SAMOA (Société d'Aménagement de la Métropole Ouest Atlantique) . Guided tour of “Hangard 32” show-room / exhibition centre for urban planning.

Programme for « Island of Nantes »

Visit to the exhibition “The Machines of the Island” www.lesmachines-nantes.fr/ This exhibition is an unprecedented artistic project. Created by François Delarozière and Pierre Orefice, it is a blend of the imaginary worlds of Jules Verne, the mechanical universe of Leonardo da Vinci, and the industrial history of Nantes, and is located on the site of the former shipyards.

Visit Aimé Césaire School, low-energy building recently completed. (71 kWh/m2/year) Meeting with Géraldine Ollieric, Project Manager on education-related constructions. The huge green roof will soon be one of the highlights of the neighbourhood. Solar thermal panels provide partial supply of hot water all year round while underground tanks collect water from roofs. www.iledenantes.com/fr/projets/89-ecole-de-la-prairie-au-duc.html

We will finish the afternoon in the little village of Trentemoult, a former sailors village, rich in redevelopment projects on the Loire.

On Sunday morning, we suggest a walk into the Madeleine district, Champs de Mars, the former LU biscuits factory, passage Douard, and the "green banks" up to Malakoff, a redeveloped area where public spaces have been made accessible. The circuit could also include a walk through the eastern part of the island: the Gardens of Foundries and redevelopment along the Loire.

  • St Nazaire Saturday 25th May

In a few years, the small village of barge navigators turned into a major production hub of transatlantic ships, and embarked on a remarkable industrial adventure, first with the construction of cruise ships and then later of seaplanes and airplanes. Destroyed during the Second World War, it has had to cope with architectonic decisions that were made in the urgency of the post-war aftermath. Since then, it has raised itself from the ashes and embraced the future with particularly bold urban architectural projects. Prepare your visit to St Nazaire: www.mairie-saintnazaire.fr/eng/

Welcome to « l’Atelier » Bénédicte CLEMENT, Director of “Programming and Urban Habitat” at City of St Nazaire will guide us during the entire day. http://www.mairie-saintnazaire.fr/urbanisme-habitat/latelier/

    Commercial centre

“Le Paquebot" – 1987. The centre of town has been revived by commercial retailers.

    Copenhagen, 25th Jan. 2013

As a part of the Town Hall, this documentation centre has been conceived as a place where residents and tourists can consult and exchange about urban projects and architecture in St Nazaire. The discovery takes place through plans, models of projects, videos as well as presentations "in situ". You will be guided through a presentation of the City, its history and its context.

  • Le Paquebot is 25 years old, and even though renovations have already begun, much remains to be done. This "face-lift" will include flooring repair, widening some paths to give more space to pedestrians, café terraces, renovation of lighting, new benches, chairs and bike tracks. The landscape architect Guillaume Sevin will provide replacement and planting of trees, shrubs and perennials. Meeting with Guillaume Sevin. Budget: 31mill. DKK, (part of the city’s “Sustainable Development Plan”)

The Blue Ribbon is a new commercial centre (2009) which was designed by architect Bernard Reichen as a "piece of the city“ with its streets, shops and homes. It was built on the site of the former "people's house" which hosted many associations and trade unions.

    Coeur carré

Since the 1970s, Felice Varini - Franco-Swiss artist – has developed work which is more than pictorial creation. Whether enclosed spaces or urban landscapes, his paintings unfold beyond the frame, even in the presence architectural elements.

Callao residence: This social residence stretches along the Durand-Gasselin street and now defines the new face of the district of Petit-Morocco. It replaces a group of dilapidated buildings from 1954. The 7-story residence is built as inverted steps with the "bow“ looking out over the ocean.

Varini´s triangles: Landscape Art - 2007, visible at the port from the panoramic terrace of the submarine base.

The municipality did not dare touch the "tower" which houses the most important trade union. The “tower” remained in place and the project was built around it! This choice has generated much political debate.

  • Sea Front: Price of Urban Planning 2010 by “The Monitor”: Our goal was first to give way to bike traffic and user comfort. This meant:

    www.nordicbusinesstravel.dk

    - Removal of car parks on the seafront - Creation of a bike track and “promenade” along the ocean It was secondly to strengthen access with the city through intersections, including landscaping by the open sea and linking the town and port. The project is deliberately toned down in order to highlight the original beauty of the landscape.

The constructions appear to be delicately placed on the ground carefully preserving floor space for vegetation.

Botanica: The project brought the “Parc Laborde“ to life again. This park was originally designed using the principles of the “follies” as in the 19th century gardens.
