About Studio Roex Studio Roex is a furniture and product design studio based in Amsterdam. The designs

of Studio Roex are based on a basic approach towards existing shapes, materials and techniques. Sharp construction and strong lines characterize the designs. This approach leads to transparent and clear objects, maintaining respect for the

characteristics of materials, shapes and techniques.

Studio Roex consists of designer Nic Roex and business partner Jeske Kapitein. Nic Roex graduated in Furniture Design at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK), The Hague in 2009. During his degree he did an internship at designer Piet Hein Eek. Following the

presentation of his final-year collection at the Salone del Mobile in Milan and the KABK graduation exhibition in 2009, Nic Roex founded Studio Nic Roex in 2010, based in Amsterdam. In 2013 Jeske Kapitein joined the studio as business partner after working

in marketing and sales for various premium brands. At Studio Nic Roex she is responsible for Marketing, Sales, Research and Business Development.

The M.C. Tangram is a candle holder that makes a full rotation during the time it takes to burn a candle. As the candles lose their mass, the candle holder starts to move. The rotation of the candle holder, around its axis, produces a continuously changing perspective. Observing the candle holder will allow you to recognize the four hidden silhouettes.

Experimenting with established processes creates new manifestations in various forms: here through the subtle transformation from one shape to another. The M.C. Tangram reveals the effect of energy through motion. Drawing the attention of observers to everyday processes that they are hardly aware of, or not at all.

Project Studio Roex and Artifort

Studio Roex works together with Artifort on a new construction method for the materials wood in

combination with steel. This method combines two existing techniques: a computer operated grining

method in combination with a computer operated folding technique (CNC). By using these techniques in

combination, the steel and wood will connect seamlessly. Aim of the project is first to realize a chair with

this new construction method, based on the iconic steel tube chair. After the realisation of this design, a

complete collection based on this construction method will be realized. The project is launched in 2013.

Renault Design Contest 2013 3rd Prize Light R-Space

Challenge In 2013 Studio Roex was selected for The Renault Design Contest, Design studios were asked to design

an object in line with the design vision of Renault. This vision was based on 6 themes. Studio Roex got

the theme ‘Family’. From this theme Studio Roex designed the light ‘R Space’. A light in which

complicated processes become transparent.

Concept Nowadays people hardly know how established processes work. This form of immediate acceptance of

the presented material is not the purpose of the work of Studio Roex. The R-Space confronts the viewer

with a familiar processs -dimming a light from clear to soft light and the other way around - and shows

how this process can be realized with physical (human) input by turning the wheel of the light.

This unexpected approach to their combination and application elicits curiosity and interaction. Studio

Roex tries to actively draw the observer into the object and wants to increase people’s awareness of what

they see, heightening their ability (and desire) to understand it. This auto-narrative quality manifests

itself also in the light R-Space.

The E.B.B. bench challenges preconceived notions. In this design, the bench’s function is left untouched, however its recognisable and familiar aspects (the four legs) are omitted. All the forces are channelled into its one leg, and are supported by its metal base. The challenge presented by this bench is one of balance. The E.B.B. consists of four steel components, the surfaces of which take on different colours depending on the angle of the light. The use of three different hues accentuates these surfaces even more.

The E.B.B. is constructed out of 2D plates, and is CNC-cut. The acrylate lends transparency to the construction, rendering the lines clearly visible and recognisable.

The Spade Seat demonstrates how playing with a familiar object can stimulate the imagination; drawing the attention of observers to everyday forms and objects placed in a different context.

The Spade Seat shows that solutions are never far away. Familiar shapes can be easily transformed, resulting in a new visual language. The clear, basic design ensures that it is both comprehensible and recognizable at the same time.

Folding Air Nomination ARC Award 13

3rd Prize

The chair Folding Air is a mobile workspace: where functionality comes together with solutions for an

actual issue: flexible working. The transformation of volume by folding the chair close/open, makes the

design an efficient solution for the actual office environment. The traditional combination of a desk and a

chair are connected in one object. Due to the handle and the wheels the Folding Air can be relocated

easily, so the work space will be used efficiently. The transparent folding-construction, makes it a clear

and sharp design.

Cable Table Collection 2012

The Cable Table heightens the viewer’s eagerness to understand its construction. At first glance, the

7mm-thick table top seems too fragile to serve its purpose.

All aspects of the various components of Cable Table 2.0 dovetail with one another and are mutually

interdependent; they all serve to support the construction as a whole. Tightening the cables provides the

table top its constructive strength, rendering it completely solid and able to retain its energy.

Car-Bonnet Couch Collection 2010

The Car-Bonnet Couch shows how logical, new functional products can be created through the re-

interpretation of existing shapes and objects. Taking advantage of the car bonnet’s original features

allows it to function as a seat, supported underneath by a metal brace. The support’s open construction

offers a clear contrast with the seat itself.

Spade Furniture Collection 2010 The Spade Furniture demonstrates how playing with a familiar object can stimulate the imagination,

drawing observers into the design and compelling them to think. A shovel has the same contours as the

human buttocks. Adding supports to a shovel in this manner enables it to take on a new functionality as a

seat.
