BUSINESS PROFILE: ALG AVIATION

Aviation has been a way of life for me since I first took the controls of an airplane when I was only 8 years old. It was definitely the best birthday present from my parents--one that

I’ll never forget! I’ve always cherished the memory of my first solo flight, which was terrifying, fun and liberating all at once!

That said, I was always fascinated with airplanes and the idea of flying, even before that defining moment. By the age of 16, I began training for my first private pilot certificate. A week after finishing high school, I enrolled in Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona where I obtained my Bachelor’s Degree in Aeronautical Science within three years. After a brief stint as a cargo pilot, I spent roughly seven years working as a commercial airline pilot for carriers such as American Eagle, Northwest Airlink and Delta Connection.

I was enjoying my career as an Airline Captain. However, when the biggest happiness in life arrived, my daughter Rose, it prompted me to make changes in many aspects of my life, always with her in mind. The decision led me to build my own company, ALG Aviation. which

also presented me an opportunity to address some passengers’ needs with a more professional and personal approach…something I was unable to do working for another airline. My vision took form, and a new chapter in my aviation career began.

From the start, ALG Aviation’s mission was to revolutionize the private airplane tour market with a personalized focus on our guests’ needs, such as safety, excellent service, professionalism, and customize services and plans.

In addition to our having Federal Aviation Agency authorization to conduct air tours, we are officially an FAA-certified and DOT-approved air carrier with authorization to conduct on-demand flights for private clients.

Our services include private plane and helicopter flight for time-sensitive business travel as well as leisure travel. We offer air tours, sightseeing and hands-on introductory flights in helicopters and airplanes, aerial photography lessons and exciting destination packages. These include Santa Ynez Wine Tasting, San Diego Trips, Catalina Island Excursions and Las Vegas Getaways. All of our air charter and tour packages are fully customizable.

My staff and I are passionate about perfecting the art of flying, and giving you the best possible service from beginning to end. Our “five out of five star” reviews on Yelp shows why ALG Aviation should be your first choice. You can also read other reviews on Trip Advisor, Google+ and Facebook. I look forward to meeting you and working with you to create your own special flight experience.

In the real estate business, knowing the neighborhood like the back of your hand is a requirement of the profession. For this reason alone, Susanna Nagy stresses there is no better place work

than Studio City. As Keller Williams-Studio City’s top performing real estate agent, she enjoys the challenge of keeping up to date on home and housing trends in the ever evolving community.

“While Studio City has long been the hip spot in the Valley, it is very exciting that our neighborhood is enjoying a fantastic renaissance. With new restaurants and boutiques opening at such a fast pace, keeping up to date is tough work,” she says with a wry smile.

Susanna’s love of Studio City began 14 years ago when she moved from Budapest to Los Angeles to put her real estate background to use. Susanna learned the true meaning of a hard day’s work having grown up on a farm in rural Hungary with three brothers. From that point onward, the work ethic has served her well.

“We were up at 5:00 am to feed the livestock before going to school, and back out again after school,” recalls Susanna. “There was a tremendous sense of community in our village, and when I moved

to Budapest for college, I felt a bit disconnected in such a large city. Although Los Angeles can be overwhelming, and there are certainly areas that are lacking that community feeling, Studio City proved to be an exception. Although I lived elsewhere in L.A. when I first moved to the United States, I had a few friends who lived in Studio City, and through them, I became increasingly acquainted with all that it has to offer.”

Within two short years, Susanna made herself at home in Studio City, personally and professionally. In her first Los Angeles real estate job, she identified investment property candidates for a real estate investment firm. However, after seven years of living in Studio City and working on the investment side of real estate, Susanna had an epiphany: As a credentialed real estate expert living in the best neighborhood in L.A., it made perfect sense for her to shift gears to residential real estate and specialize in representing buyers and sellers in the neighborhood she grew to love. It is perhaps no surprise that within months after joining the Studio City office of Keller Williams, she became a top agent.

“I absolutely love what I do!” exclaims Susanna. “Whoever said, ‘find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life’ was

right. It is such a great feeling to find a (client) family a special home in our neighborhood that perfectly fits their lifestyle and goals. It’s rewarding to know that their kids will be attending top schools, and that the family will love the area.

Even with her winning accolades from the Wall Street Journal as a top producing California real estate agent, representing clients throughout greater L.A., she truly believes Studio City is the place to live.

“The first order of business when I have a client new to Los Angeles is to give them a tour of many of the great Los Angeles neighborhoods,” she says. “Perhaps it is my subconscious passion for our community that results in many of my clients saying, ‘You know, I really liked that Studio City neighborhood you showed us.’”

Susanna says that if you can catch her when she is not working, it will likely be on one of the areas hiking trails.

“There is no better way to start your day than will a nice hike, and if you haven’t explored the Betty Dearing Trail in Fryman Canyon you don’t know what you are missing!” she states. “For me, the perfect evening is a night at the Hollywood Bowl, a few minutes from Studio City, where relaxing with fantastic music, great food and friends under the clear night sky is the ultimate California experience. I am also a huge Los Angeles Kings fan, and was excited to see the Kings win game seven of the Stanley Cup in person.

Susanna also has a passion for giving back to the community, and is very involved in volunteer activities. One of her favorite charitable organizations in the San Fernando Valley is LA Family Housing,

whose mission is to help families transition out of homelessness and poverty through a continuum of housing enriched with supportive services.

“When you hear first-hand about the incredible impact that LA Family Housing has on families that need temporary assistance, you will want to get involved,” she affirms. “As the chairperson of the Keller Williams Charitable Committee, I organized a team of over 40 agents to provide a full day of community service at the charity’s headquarters. We spent the day preparing and serving meals to over 300 families in need. I was so proud to see so many Studio City volunteers helping out, proving once again that we are truly a community that cares.”

Susanna recently was able to share her passion for California with her family by flying her three brothers out for an epic one-month vacation.

Goldfish Crackers: And 7 Other Foods I Hate Now That I’m A Parent

By Nicole Weinstein, Center Director of Mathnasium of Studio City

National PTA & Mathnasium Join Forces to Expand STEM EducationFor over a decade now, education in the United States

has seen a shift in focus to promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) principles in the

classroom. The movement ensures that current students and future generations will be prepared for the high demand of careers in STEM fields. Projections based on U.S. economic patterns show that there will be about 2.4 million STEM jobs ready to be taken by Americans by 2018. The National PTA, founded in 1897, has continued to work with policymakers at local and national levels to ensure that all students have equal access to educational opportunities that allow them to reach their full potential.

The National PTA has held the title of being the oldest and largest volunteer child advocacy organization in the United States, having over four million members including parents, students, educators,

school administrators, and community leaders. Since its inception, this national group has been proud of its success in establishing many major policies and initiatives, such as helping pass child labor laws, improving nutrition in schools, and defending students who

have struggled with unfair or punitive measures in the American judicial system.

With its recent initiative in the fall of 2015 to support the STEM movement, the National PTA announced this summer its partnership with Mathnasium to focus on the “M” in STEM. With more than 650 math learning

and enrichment centers in the United States, Mathnasium is very enthusiastic and excited to sponsor and support the

National PTA with its production of math resources for parents and development of activities and events that will promote fun ways that students can engage with math. “Through its personalized programs, Mathnasium seeks to make math fun and understandable for every child,” said Laura Bay, president of National PTA. “We are thrilled to have Mathnasium join our STEM initiative and collaborate to engage families and inspire children’s love of math.”

With this new partnership, the National PTA and Mathnasium aim to create 100,000 STEM experiences over the next three years that will provide engagement opportunities for families at home and in schools.

“Mathnasium is proud and honored to forge an alliance with National PTA. As a founding sponsor of National PTA’s STEM initiative, we’re especially excited to help PTA inspire the next generation of STEM professionals and help lay the foundation for the association to deliver 100,000 STEM experiences for families

in communities and schools across the country,” said Peter Markovitz, founder and chief executive officer of Mathnasium. “This invaluable opportunity to collaborate with dedicated educators and parent leaders heralds an exciting new chapter for our company as we carry out our mission to help every child understand—and master—math.”

Check out the National PTA’s website for more information about its STEM initiative and partnership with Mathnasium (www.pta.org/parents, under “STEM + Families”). There, you can also find tips and other guides developed by Mathnasium and the National PTA that can help parents understand how to help their child deeply understand mathematical concepts and what their child should master at each grade level.

Making Halloween A Treat

HHalloween conjures up visions of autumn leaves, carved Jack O’Lanterns, and happy children in costumes.

Depending on your own child’s age and temperament, what makes Halloween so popular may or may not be embraced with glee. As a school counselor and parenting consultant, and a

mother of three children, I have learned a great deal from my 21 years of celebrating Halloween in Studio City. I offer the following tips for making Halloween fun and memorable for your child:

Rule one: Halloween is intended to be fun: The best way to enjoy the holiday is to allow your child to celebrate Halloween in his or her own unique way. Plan activities that meet your child where he or she is emotionally and socially. Many children wholeheartedly love Halloween and embrace the spine-tingling aspect of the holiday. On the other hand, if your child is fearful of the idea of monsters and witches, then dial down that aspect. Focus on the purely fun parts of Halloween, such as going to the pumpkin patch or decorating the house. If your child is a social butterfly, happily accept invitations to

parties or host your own spooky get-together. If your child is easily overwhelmed by the costumes and activities, opt for a low-key evening with just one friend, or family only.

Create your own traditions: Let your child know that there is no “right way” to celebrate Halloween and every family decides how best to enjoy the holiday. Make sure your child knows that you are completely fine if they choose to trick-or-treat, or if they prefer, to stay home and give out the candy.

Etiquette and beating the Bully Boogieman: The days leading up to Halloween are a good time for a conversation with your child about Halloween manners. Enforce a family rule that that there is no teasing anyone about feeling nervous or frightened. Having a “go with the flow” attitude will ensure a relaxed and fun holiday for everybody. Keep in mind the only true goal is that all family members enjoy the celebration. Convey the message that the only appropriate comment about a classmate’s costume is a compliment. Remind your child that because some peers’ homemade costumes are fragile, he should not touch them. Explain that a classmate may make a thoughtless comment about his costume. Work with him to prepare a snappy reply, such as, “It’s Halloween, and I love my costume!” along with a quick change of topic such as, “What is your favorite candy?”

Dressing for success: Costume choices offer an opportunity for your child’s dreams to take flight, be their vision scary, funny or beautiful. Put aside what you would choose for your child’s costume and give them free rein for this delicious opportunity to wear whatever they like. Have your child start thinking about her costume choice at the beginning of October and be willing to engage in endless conversations about the pros and cons of each selection. Elementary school age children typically love their costumes and are unconcerned what their classmates may say about it. Tweens, however, can excessively worry about what their peers will think about their choice. Be aware that worry about being judged is developmentally commonplace for middle schoolers. Offer plenty of support for your tween’s costume choice. Based on my experience,

I recommend not finalizing the choice until about a week before Halloween unless you are willing to make frequent last-minute trips to Party City when your child changes her mind.

Get schooled on appropriate class time celebrations: As many of our local schools stage Halloween carnivals or parades, it’s good to keep in mind that October 31st in Studio City is often an extremely hot day. Help your child to make their costume comfortable for a sunny, day but also allow for a warmer layer for nighttime activities. For younger children, the school celebration may be tiring, so a short trick-or-treat outing followed by a slightly-later-than-usual bedtime is ideal. Be prepared for your older child to want one costume for the school celebration and a different one for going door-to-door at night.

More food for thought: As food allergies and establishing healthier eating are hot button topics with teachers and parents, be sure you are up to date with your school and your children’s homeroom teachers on what foods are permissible for class parties, or what may be done instead of serving food.

The easiest way to enjoy Halloween is to be true to your child and make plans that work for your family members’ unique personalities. Don’t get caught up in the competition for best costume or best home decorations. Keep in mind the adage, “Comparison is the thief of joy,” and only focus on what works for your family. Happy Halloween!
