STUDENTS RAISE FUNDS FOR CHARITY
LVC students and staff were busy raising funds
for charity in the run-up to Christmas. On Friday
12 December, everyone got into the Christmas
spirit by wearing festive jumpers, raising around
£750 for Save the Children. The amount will be
doubled by the government’s UK Aid, making
£1,500 in total. On the same day, over 130 senior
citizens were welcomed to LVC for the biggest
ever Coffee & Carols party, with music from the
wind band and choir and Year 9 students serving
coffee, cake and mince pies. The students had
raised the money for the event themselves and it
was also generously supported by Linton Co-op.
On Friday 19 December, the last day of term, we
held our traditional Christmas Charities Fayre,
raising almost £2,000 for our partner school in
South Africa and charities chosen by the House
Councils. Well done to everyone involved
in planning and organising these events.
STAFF NEWS At the end of last term, we said goodbye to Karen Milne, History teacher,
who is leaving us to have a baby, and Raquel del Prado, our Spanish assistant, who has gone
to teach in Downham Market. We are joined by three new teachers this term.
Sujana Sudhaman is taking on some additional English teaching and helping us to develop
our new English curriculum in the light of national changes. Warren Rayson and Katie Yates
will job-share the Humanities post and look after 7KM tutor group until the end of the year.
We welcome them all very warmly to the LVC community. Caroline Derbyshire
From the Principal…
Happy New Year to all of our parents
and students!
It looks quite springlike outside from my window, but
during January and February there is always the
possibility of snow causing disruption to schools.
LVC is fortunate to be able to call on the services of
Camgrain if there is snow on our drives to clear because
they kindly send round their snowplough. However, we
can only do this if we have time to clear the site. If snow
falls thickly between 6 and 8.30am, we cannot clear the
site before school is due to start and if it falls during the
school day, when cars and children are on the site, it is
not safe to employ the snowplough until after they have
gone home. In these circumstances, we would need to
close or send students home early in anticipation of the
greater hazards involved in driving on thickly covered
roads or in poor light. We would then clear the site in
order to open the following day, thus keeping disruption
to a minimum.
We understand that school closures are very difficult for
parents to manage. If the school were to close, a
message would go out on all local radio stations from
7am. This message would be reinforced on the LVC
website and Facebook page. If we had to send students
home early, we would contact you via Schoolcomms,
your child’s mobile phone and on the school website.
Messages would also go out via Facebook and Twitter.
Making a judgement about something as fickle as the
British winter is never easy, but we do our best to make
the right call and we bear in mind, as I hope you will,
that you cannot please all of the people all of the time.
Have a very happy January.
Caroline Derbyshire
PS. You may be wondering why the college is wrapped
up like a giant Christmas present at the moment. The
reason is that we have been awarded a grant for the
repair and repainting of our original 1930s Crittall
windows in the listed building. Disruption to classes will
be kept to a minimum and we look forward to seeing
the building restored to its former glory before long.

SPORTS NEWS—SUCCESS FOR LVC XC TEAM
Year 7 boys set off at the start of their
race at the district cross-country
championships at Netherhall School in
December. LVC sent a team of 51
athletes who all took part with
enthusiasm on a bitterly cold day.
LVC finished in third place overall, with
the Year 8/9 boys winning their event
with three runners
in the top ten. There were also good results
for the Year 7 girls and Year 10/11 boys,
who both came third. A number of
individuals have qualified for the County
Championships at King’s Ely on 17 January,
including Angharad Evans (right), who came
second in the Year 7 girls’ race.
