deMESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENTDear Students, We would like you to get this message as a friendly address, coming from the people who have graduated from Transylvania University and resided in the university hostels.We intend to address you an efficient participatory management, where you, the students, set the tone and give solutions to your projects and problems, which we will support in their completion.We envisage a modern campus, a new one, meeting your needs. We will not overlap the concepts specific to university life with those promoted within companies, but we will accept a series of these concepts within our university, too; thus we consider customer satisfaction as a principle that should guide us in the relationship with you. With a view to developing a successful relationship with you, we acknowledge that we must adjust to your requirements, not only in terms of teaching but also in terms of campus life.This is an issue we are ever more focused on at present. In this respect, we want you, our students, to get involved in everything that concerns the campus life, to participate with us in the development of your projects and to be aware that you must preserve all that is done for you. Also, we would like to achieve a new image of the university, a modern and a stylish one, with a broad visibility among youth and beyond. We entirely rely on the support of your student associations in developing projects intended for you.We know that we are moving on very quickly, in a fast-moving world, often less thoughtful of you, the younger ones. Civilization progresses, the character of the young is evolving and we, as managers of educational institutions, especially as trainers, must take into account all these aspects. Thus, to achieve our common objectives, our partnership, our mutual support must prevail over anything.

Good luck and we welcome you to join us.Best wishes,

Prof. Ioan Vasile ABRUDAN, Ph.D.Rector

Prof. Daniel MUNTEANU, Ph.D.Vice-Rector for Students and Liaisons with the Economic and Socio-Cultural Environment1

deCREDITSEvery discipline that you study is rated with a number of credits. A credit implies approximately 30 hours of student work. The student work may be assisted (lectures, seminars, laboratories) or individual (allocated time for research in libraries, producing personal work, practical activities and so on). It is important to note that through credits you are not measured in terms of educational quality or the importance of the discipline, but of the quantity / volume of student effort. The quality of the content is evaluated by grades.In the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System), meant to facilitate studies recognition and equivalence between universities, 60 credit units (UC) are accepted for all the disciplines in a study year and 30 credit units (CU) for the disciplines in a semester. Under this agreement, in the curricula of Transilvania University of Brasov, a total of 30 UC for compulsory and optional disciplines in a semester is allotted.You can find further information in the Regulation regarding the students’ professional activities.

PASSING IN THE FOLLOWING YEAR OF STUDYAfter completing a year of study, you can be in one of the following situations:• A student having promoted the academic year, if you have

acquired the total number of credits for the corresponding year: 60 credit units;

• A student having credited the academic year (having passed in a superior year), if you pass in the following year acquiring the minimum number of 40 credit units in the current year and if you have fully promoted the previous years;

• A student having extended the education period (repeated year / additional year), if you have acquired between 10 and 39 credit units or if you have acquired at least 40 credits in the current year, but you have less than 60 credits resulting from the previous year;

• A student having been expelled if you have acquired less than 10 credit units.

The status of either a budgeted student or a student with tuition fees may change from one academic year to another, depending on the criteria and performance standards established by the University Senate and stipulated in the university contract: obtaining the required number of credits to pass in the following year and ranking students’ value according to the sum of points they have acquired in the previous year.If you have resits, you should know that a special reexamination session is organized in autumn, in the immediate reexamination session (when you can also resit an exam to improve your score), or in the following year along with the fellow students in a previous year at the set date they planned the exam for a certain discipline. For the current year resits fees are not to be paid but for the previous year reexamination must be paid.

ACADEMIC YEAR STRUCTURE

The academic year is divided into two semesters, each semester having 14 weeks of teaching (15 weeks for the Faculty of Medicine) and an examination session of 4 weeks. The structure of each academic year - periods of activity and legal breaks (holidays, public vacations, religious holidays, etc.) are approved by the Senate and communicated at the beginning of each academic year. In the winter session subjects taught in the first semester of the academic year are evaluated and in the summer session subjects taught in the second semester of the academic year are assessed.To repeat assessment of the failed subjects or reassess students competence in the subjects passed in the winter session, or summer examination session, a reexamination session is held – the fall reexamination session lasting two weeks. In specific cases, the university may approve of additional sessions (reexamination sessions, sessions for medical problems, etc).

HOW TO READ THE TIMETABLE

The timetable contains many symbols and different arrangements of cells. First of all, you should know that the students in your year or specialism may be divided into several groups. In these groups, the students are ordered alphabetically. So, for instance, if your last name begins with the letter A, you are in the first group. Lectures/seminars/laboratory classes last 100 minutes. Some of them are scheduled every other week, therefore some cells containing the symbols for disciplines are split to allow two entries. The entry in the upper half of the cell corresponds to the discipline held in the odd weeks (the 1st, the 3rd, etc.), whereas the discipline held in the even weeks (the 2nd, the 4th, etc.) is to be found in the lower half of the cell. The symbols for the lectures, seminars, etc. are made up of: the code of the discipline (which can be found on the website), the activity type (C = course, S = seminar, L = laboratory), the classroom (the code refers to: building, floor, room no.), and the professor’s name:e.g. : LIII1 = building L, floor 3, room 1.

HOW TO READ THE TIMETABLE OPPORTUNITIES

SCHOLARSHIPSThe most common types of scholarships are study scholarships, merit scholarships and social ones. The students with special results can benefit from performance scholarships, and excellence scholarships. In the first year, the students don’t receive study scholarship, in the first semester, but only in the second semester, based on the grades obtained in the first semester and the budget amount allocated by the state. The study scholarship is conceived in such manner that it can cover the minimum expenses that include accommodation costs and meals. Social scholarships are granted to the students who have passed all the exams, in the following situations: - to orphan students, to those who come from orphanages or foster homes or who don’t have an income; - to students who suffer from tuberculosis and are registered in the medical evidence, to those who suffer from diabetes, malignant diseases, serious malabsorption syndromes, chronic renal insufficiency, bronchial asthma, epilepsy, congenital heart diseases, chronic hepatitis, glaucoma, serious myopia, immunological disease, those who are infested with the HIV virus or AIDS patients, ankylosing spondylitis or acute articular rheumatism;- to students who come from families that have not had a monthly net income for the last three months higher than the lowest governmental salary per family member, within the funds limits. For further information read the Regulations concerning the scholarships and other means of material support.

IT Challenge is a project developed by AIESEC Braşov and aims at a change in the local environment by targeting the IT market and by creating a link between Brasov students and local companies in the field. The project offers students from the technical faculties the chance to participate in theoretical sessions followed by thematic workshops led by representatives of Brasov IT companies.

Grow is the most popular educational project in Romania. It is de-veloped in partnership with the School of Values and it targets high-school students aged between 14 and 16. By becoming involved in Grow, students take part in informal training sessions and workshops which are intended to complement, not replace, the formal educa-tional system. These activities are led by young visiting international students invited within AIESEC programmes.

Global Internship Programme is the programme that offers paid 3-to-12-month internship. There are various fields of internship, such as: IT, management, marketing, accountancy, education, mechanical engineering, etc. Applicants need to demonstrate that they have at least three months experience in the field.

Global Community Development Programme is the programme that offers 6-week volunteer internship. The aim here is both personal de-velopment and the gain of an international perspective of the com-munity. This type of internship offers free accommodation and meals.AIESEC gives you the chance to visit more than 110 countries.
