Interest Approach: Use an interest approach that will prepare the students for the lesson. Teachers often develop approaches for their unique class and student situations. A possible approach is included here.
Slide 4 in AP11 Machinery AnalysisMy Machinery Needs: Have each student complete AP11.1 individually based upon his/her personal situation.
When finished, have students examine their findings when answering the following questions: What is the timeliness and labor required for this machinery? What are some ideas to reduce machinery costs for the enterprise?

Summary of Content and Teaching Strategies
Objective 1: Determine machinery costs in relations to fieldwork days and implement selection.
Teaching Strategies Related Content1. What is timeliness?
2. Share with students that it is a measure of the ability to perform a job at the time that maximizes profits.
3. So, how can we identify the trade-off between machine costs and timeliness?
Slide 5 in AP11 Machinery Analysis
4. The number of hours and days available for a fieldwork day during each season is needed to eventually figure machinery needs.
5. To determine probable fieldwork days, register at: http://fapri.missouri.edu/farmers_corner/tools/index.asp?current_page=farmers_corner.
6. AP11.2 also provides useful information about fieldwork days. Copy this guide for students, having them highlight the key points in determining available field days.
7. Share results with the class.
8. Teach students the formula for determining days and hours available for field work.
Slide 6 in AP11 Machinery Analysis
Machine Costs and Timeliness Trade-Off Ability to maximize use of time is
increased by using bigger machines – Bigger machines increase effective capacity
To gain timeliness, one must usually give up money
Timeliness is the primary factor that causes producer’s machinery costs to be high
Fieldwork Days Determine number of calendar days
available Subtract Sundays or other days that will
not be available for work – These are optional days

9. Now that we know time availability, we can determine what implement size is needed.
Slide 7 in AP11 Machinery Analysis
10. How might we determine the size of tractor needed for a farm business?
Slide 8 in AP11 Machinery Analysis
11. Further explore implement and tractor needs, along with machinery costs using these tools: AP11.3 Machinery Cost Estimates MachineryEconomics Machdata
Multiply by .33 before May 1 or after September 30
Multiply by .5 between May 1 and September 30
Multiply by number of hours spent in field per day and allow enough time for other necessary activity
(cal. days – opt. days) x % days usable x hours usable per day
Implement Size Determine number of acres to be
worked Determine amount of time available Divide acres to be worked by hours
available
Tractor Needs Determine implement with largest
power requirement that will be used with tractor
Match power requirement to tractor size needed
Objective 2: Determine acceptable custom rates for Missouri.

1. What factors determine rates for custom work?
2. Read together and discuss AP11.4. A link to the most updated version of this document can be found at http://agebb.missouri.edu/mgt/index.htm.
3. When finished, have students complete AP11.5.
4. Share results with the class and discuss students’ prices and reasoning behind them.
Review/SummarySlide 9 in AP11 Machinery Analysis
Since a farmer’s financial resources are limited, the farm business manager must make the most time-wise and cost-effective choices possible when determining machinery needs. To make the right decisions, farm business managers must figure in advance of the purchase whether they should own machinery or have customer operators perform needed farming activities. The decision will depend on the amount of work to be done and the trade-off between timeliness and costs.
Review:
Slide 10 in AP11 Machinery AnalysisExit cards: Students will answer the following questions on a note card or small slip of paper and hand to teacher as they exit:
What did you learn today about machinery analysis? What questions do you still have about machinery analysis?
Application
Extended ActivitiesExamine the difference between owning machinery and leasing machinery. Numerous articles are available at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/agdm/cdmachinery.html#machinery and http://www.cffm.umn.edu/publications/FarmMgtTopics.aspx. A Farm Doc Fast Tools spreadsheet is also available for calculations.
