India has a coastline of about 7500 km.

This coastline

comprises of 66 wind prone districts in 9 states

Non availability of concrete raw materials

• River Sand?

• Cement (Decline in lime stone sources)?

• Aggregate (Disappearance of Mountains)?

• Potable water

• Labour shortage

Compared to Concrete, Masonry and Timber, Steel has many advantages….

Steel has the highest strength to weight ratio of any building material.

Ductile material.

Simplified foundation construction.

Components are sustainable i.e can be recycled

Steel is environmentally friendly.

Steel construction is a fast method.

Don’t worry about the corrosion…

The structure will last for minimum of 300 years to the maximum of 1484 years.

• 7 years of research by AISI.

• Based on the weight loss.

• Various environments.

Few Thoughts

• Per capita consumption of steel is directly proportional to GDP. Increase consumption of steel to promote national growth

• Land is becoming a premium in India.

• Our population has increase four times since independence.

• This requires us to grow vertically using a high strength superior material such as Steel.

• India is fast becoming a Seismic prone nation.

• Preferred choice of material for Seismic is Steel.

Future needs • High strength steel (350,450,550 MPa & beyond)

• Parallel flange structural steel sections

• Advocate the need for structural steel in Bridge industry

• Policy makers should take a decision based on life cycle cost analysis not on initial cost alone

• Improvements to IS-800 and IS-801 Inclusion of commentary Inclusion of real life design examples
