• Each year 0ver 20,000 people have an episode of homelessness.

• Of this number, 25 percent are under the age of 18.

SOME STATISTICS: Homelessness, San Mateo County

• Homelessness in San Mateo County increased 71% from 2001-2003.

• Over 6,000 people become homeless in San Mateo County every year.

• The typical homeless person on the Peninsula is just 5 years old. Families with children are the fastest growing segment of homelessness.

• Most of the parents in homeless families do have jobs, but they are low-paying and don’t provide enough to cover the high cost of housing.

• The vast majority of homeless people on the Peninsula are hard-working families who have become homeless because of a financial emergency.

Great Things Our Community Organizations Do

• Every month, Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties serves an average of 163,500 people; enough people to fill Candlestick Park more than twice.

• 60% are low-income families• 37% are children• 20% are seniors

• In 2005, Family Giving Tree gave away 63,000 toys to children in need through 256 community organizations over the holidays.

• Last year, Samaritan House in San Mateo County collected 400,000 lbs. of food and 40,000 new toys to distribute to 1,400 families during the holidays. 300 of these families were shut-ins, or people physically unable to pick up their holiday packages at the distribution center.
