In our family life we can sometimes hear echoes of the disciples' excuses: “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” Sometimes this echo is heard from children squabbling about the last piece of cake. Sometimes it is heard in our concern about the limits of the family's income or possessions. Sometimes this echo is heard in our complaints about the seemingly endless demands for our time and attention. Jesus understood these feelings and taught us to see beyond our limitations. Jesus modeled for us a compassion that reaches out to others, even when we would rather withdraw into ourselves. Jesus taught us that God blesses compassion offered to others with his grace. Today's Gospel reminds us that with God there is not only enough, there is an abundance! Talk together about some of the stresses and demands for time and attention that your family members might feel. Acknowledge that we sometimes have to make difficult choices about how to use our time, talents, and treasure. Then read together today's Gospel, Matthew 14:13-21. Notice how much Jesus cared for the crowds, healing the sick even though he wanted to withdraw to a quiet place. Notice how the disciples responded to Jesus' instruction to feed the crowd; they noted their limited supply of food. Jesus blessed this limited supply of food, and it was enough to feed the entire crowd, more than 5,000 people, and there were leftovers! Pray together that Jesus will grant us compassion like his so that we will offer whatever we have to others with compassion and generosity. Pray together today's Psalm, Psalm 145. You will also have heard that there has been an outbreak associated with the Maronite church in Harris Park and this may lead to the further tightening of restrictions. The major changes that will affect our parishes are as follows. The 4m 2 rule still determines the maximum number of people per building, but there is now a restriction to 100 even in those large churches where the 4m 2 rule might have allowed for a greater number. More than one building (e.g. the church and the hall with a videolink) can be used at the same time, with up to 100 per building, as long as the 4m 2 rule is observed. Baptism, anointing and giving Holy Communion is regarded as of no greater risk than the service of food and drinks in restaurants and clubs which is allowed; with a suitable COVID Safety plan in place, these celebrations are permissible. Congregational singing is still not allowed. Recent health advice has indicated that while droplets quickly fall to the ground, the aerosol emissions during singing promote too great a risk even for those adhering to the specified 1.5m physical distancing requirement. Members of the congregation should be discouraged from mingling before, during or after the service. While we await the amended public health order, it seems clear that the 100 person limit and 4m 2 rule will continue to apply for quite some time – for some months at least. This will obviously have a significant impact on parish life, community engagement, and our financial viability. It will mean that even parishes with large churches (assuming 3 or 4 Sunday Masses, including Vigil Mass) will only be able to gather a maximum 300 or 400 people each weekend for the Eucharist, though presumably, numbers will be even smaller because the elderly, sick or anxious will stay away, thus putting pressure on the parish’s viability. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

    First Reading : Isaiah 55:1-3 A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah

    The Lord says this:

    "Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters;

    and you that have no money, come, buy and eat!

    Come, buy wine and milk without money and without

    price. "Why do you spend your money for that which is

    not bread, and your labour for that which does not

    satisfy?

    Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good,

    and delight yourselves in rich food.

    "Incline your ear, and come to me;

    listen, so that you may live.

    I will make with you an everlasting covenant,

    my steadfast, sure love for David."

    The word of the Lord.

    Thanks be to God.

    Responsorial Psalm Ps 144:8-9, 15-18

    R. You open your hand to feed us, Lord; you answer all

    our needs.

    The Lord is gracious and merciful,

    slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

    The Lord is good to all,

    and his compassion is over all that he has made. R.

    The eyes of all look to you

    and you give them their food in due season.

    You open your hand,

    satisfying the desire of every living thing. R.

    The Lord is just in all his ways,

    and kind in all his doings.

    The Lord is near top all who call on him,

    to all who call on him in truth. R.

    Second Reading Romans 8:35, 37-39

    A reading from the letter of Paul to the Roman

    Who will separate us from the love of Christ?

    Will hardship, or distress, or persecution,

    or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

    No, in all these things we are more than

    conquerors

    through him who loved us.

    For I am convinced that neither death, nor life,

    nor angels, nor rulers,

    nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,

    nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all

    creation,

    will be able to separate us

    from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

    The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

    Gospel : Matthew 14:13-21 A reading from the holy gospel according to

    Matthew

    When Jesus heard that Herod had beheaded John

    the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted

    place by himself.

    But when the crowds heard it,

    they followed him on foot from the towns.

    When he went ashore, Jesus saw a great crowd;

    and he had compassion for them and cured their

    sick.

    Then it was evening, the disciples came to him and

    said, "This is a deserted place, and the hour is now

    late; send the crowds away so that they may go

    into the villages and buy food for themselves."

    Jesus said to them,

    "They need not go away;

    you give them something to eat."

    They replied, "We have nothing here but five

    loaves and two fish."

    And he said, "Bring them here to me."

    Then Jesus ordered the crowds to sit down on the

    grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish,

    he looked up to heaven,

    and blessed and broke the loaves,

    and gave them to the disciples,

    and the disciples gave them to the crowds.

    And all ate and were filled;

    and they took up what was left over of the broken

    pieces, twelve baskets full.

    And those who ate were about five thousand men,

    besides women and children.

    The Gospel of the Lord.

    Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
