DIRECTOR ’S NOTES

In the spirit of our 23rd season, The Conquest of the South Pole asks us: How can we become extraordinary when everything is so absurdly ordinary? Conquest makes us ask the tough questions about what makes us who we are and what would we do if that certainty was taken away. In this play, four unemployed miners are attempting to define themselves in a world hostile to the jobless. Fueled by hope and imagination, they embark on a journey of psychological and spiritual survival by reenacting the first successful expedition to the South Pole. In their attic. It might sound crazy but when we are robbed of our identity the world becomes such an uncertain and frightening place that the possibility of uncharted polar territory actually feels safer than facing the unemployment office again. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

As I contemplate the ideas that nourish this play, I can’t help but think of the words of Samuel Beckett from his novel The Unnamable: “Perhaps it’s done already, perhaps they have said me already, perhaps they have carried me to the threshold of my story, before the door that opens on my story, that would surprise me, if it opens, it will be I, it will be the silence, where I am, I don’t know, I’ll never know, in the silence you don’t know, you must go on, I can’t go on, I’ll go on.”

Jennifer Avery* (Braukmann’s Wife) has been a Strawdog ensemble member since 1999 after appearing in the Company’s production of Hurly

Burly. She has been seen in many Strawdog productions, including Measure for Measure, Our Country’s Good, Knives in Hens (for which she received a Jeff nomination for Best Actress), Detective Story, Fuddy Meers, Three Sisters, and The Cherry Orchard. She has worked for a number of other theaters around town including Writers’ Theater (Dutchess of Malfi and Puppetmaster of Lodz), Victory Gardens (Four Places, Class Dismissed), American Theater Co. (American Dead, Living Out), About Face (Cloud 9, Undone), Collaboraction (Life and Times of Tulsa Lovechild), Chicago Dramatists (Feast), The Next (Lovesong of J. Robert Oppenheimer, Long Christmas Ride Home, War with the Newts) and Roadworks (PhyroGiants, Some Explicit Polaroids). She spent two seasons at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland and trained with Mike Nichols and Paul Sills

at The New Actors Workshop. Jenny currently serves as the Artistic Director at Next Theatre Co.

Michael Dailey* (Sieffert) was last seen on the Strawdog stage in last Fall’s State Of The Union. Other Strawdog

productions include Aristocrats, Marathon ‘33, Detective Story, Julius Caesar, and Measure For Measure, among many many others. Like Hurlyburly. Around town he has been privileged to work with About Face, Writer’s Theatre, Shattered Globe, Steppenwolf, Eclipse, Noble Fool, The Black Ensemble, and Defiant Theatre. He’s written some radio plays with Strawdog’s ‘Hit Factory’ writing program and is an official ‘Wordjammer.’ He is a graduate of Illinois State and a native of St. Louis.

Joel Ewing (Frankieboy) is very excited to be making his Strawdog debut! He currently serves as Managing Director for LiveWire Chicago

Theatre and recently played Vincent in their Chicago premiere of The 13th of Paris. Additional LiveWire shows include their Jeff Recommended productions of Red Angel and Wonder of the World. Other Chicago credits include Redeemers and The Man Who Was Thursday (New Leaf ), War With the Newts (Next Theatre), The Private Lives of Eskimos (The Mill), Suitcase (Appetite Theatre), Multi-Purpose Doom (Sandbox Theatre Project), Parade (Bailiwick), Phyro-Giants and How To Act Around Cops (Open Cage Ensemble).

John Ferrick* (Buscher) has been a proud Strawdog ensemble member since 2001, and could not be more pleased to be

working on this production with these amazing artists. Other shows you may have seen him in at Strawdog include Red Noses, Old Town, Three Sisters, Marathon ‘33, Tooth of Crime, Julius Caesar, Fuddy Meers, Knives in Hens, The Green Bird, and Our Country’s Good. He is also a company member of A Crew of Patches where he performs in rep, Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth, and Julius Caesar. Some other theatres John has performed with include: Goodman, Court, Lifeline, The Hypocrites, The Side Project, Eclipse, Famous Door, About Face, National Jewish, and Roadworks. Finally John would like to thank Chelsea for making life so much better than he ever thought it could be.

Tom Hickey* (Braukmann) is thrilled to finally get the opportunity to work with Kimberly Senior. A Strawdog Company member

since 2000, he appeared here most recently in The Master and Margarita as well as Uncle Vanya, St. Crispin’s Day, Cherry Orchard, Old Town, and Aristocrats, among others. Tom has also appeared in The North Plan (Steppenwolf First Look), The Pillowman (RedTwist), Thieves Like Us and Valentine Victorious (The House), The Mark of Zorro (Lifeline), Scenes from the Big Picture (Seanachai), The Great God Pan (Wildclaw) as well as three seasons performing with Lakeside Shakespeare in Michigan.

Anderson Lawfer* (Rudi) is excited to perform at Strawdog where he is an ensemble member and was recently seen as

Jamie Vann* (Slupianek) has been a Strawdog ensemble member for several years, appearing in Detective Story,

Hank Boland* (Managing Director) collaborated with the ensemble as a playwright in the creation of The True Ballad of Fall’s Blessings (2005), contributed to WirelessFour (2005), and wrote Radio Theater Six (2007). In 2006 he was asked to create a writing initiative for the Strawdog Ensemble, now known as THE HIT FACTORY! Hank was asked to join the ensemble in 2008, and is proud to be a member of this artistic family. Hank began his relationship with Strawdog in 2000 as an audience member. (Just like you!) Other directing diversions include various projects with the Bohemian Theatre Company, the Vittum Theater, the Next Theatre, Victory Gardens, Lakeside Shakespeare Theatre, Collaboraction, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, Titan Productions, question?mark productions, the Shawnee Playhouse, and Chicago Dramatists Workshop. Nic is a native Chicagoan (he grew up in Park Forest, for you sticklers for geographic detail) and a proud graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University and Rich East High School.

Alex Farrington (Assistant Fight Choreographer) is a Freelance Fight choreographer in Chicago. He is a graduate of Columbia College Chicago, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Theater/Acting. His work has been seen in Return to Haifa at Next Theater, and Sex Marks the Spot at Stage 773. He is certified with the SAFD in the eight weapons offered, and with the BASSC in Unarmed, Broadsword, and Rapier and Dagger.

Jackson C. Haywood (Dramaturg) is excited to be working with Strawdog Theatre Company for the first time. Jackson is a graduate of Columbia College Chicago with his B.A. in Directing where his credits include The Water Engine and Naomi In the Living Room. Most recently he worked as the dramaturg for Madagascar at Next Theatre Company, where he also serves as the casting intern. He has stage managed for Echoes of the War at Rendition Theatre and Shows You’d Never See Unless You Knew Someone In the Cast at Gorilla Tango Theatre.

Cortney Hurley* (Production Manager/General Manager) is delighted to be in the midst of her fifth season at Strawdog Theatre, where last year she thought it might also be fun to become the General Manager as well. Previous and current

production management positions include Ellen Under Glass with the House Theatre of Chicago and One False Note with Plasticene, as well as serving as the production manager at Lifeline Theatre since the fall of 2006 on such productions as The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Mark of Zorro and Neverwhere. She has also served as the Assistant Production Manager at Theater on the Lake since 2004.

Jordan Kardasz (Lighting Designer) has been plotting to oust Sean Mallary since she assisted him on The Cherry Orchard here at Strawdog. But even more exciting is the opportunity to light a show that Kimberly Senior has directed. Some design credits include Bento (Winifred Haun Dance), Sonnets for an Old Century (Urban Theatre Company), The Three Faces of Dr. Crippen (Strange Tree Group), Heddatron, Theories of the Sun (Sideshow), Jenny and Jenni (Factory), Step into the Ring, Revolving Doors (Matter Dance), Prodigies (Chicago Dance Crash). Jordan has also been the assistant lighting designer for Madagascar (Next), Neverwhere (Lifeline), Master and Margarita, Uncle Vanya, Cherry Orchard, St. Crispins Day (Strawdog Theater Co.), Macbeth (City Lit), The Pirates of Penzance, Oedipus, Frankenstein (The Hypocrites). So many thanks to Sean or else I wouldn’t know what the heck I was doing here. And love always to Matt.

Toni Kendrick (Props Designer) is a BFA set design student at DePaul University’s Theatre School. She has designed Much Ado About Nothing and Loose Knit at DePaul; and assisted on Haroun, The Sea of Stories and A Raisin in the Sun. Toni has worked as a theatre carpenter for three years.

Christopher Kriz (Original Music and Sound Design) is pleased to be working with Strawdog for the first time. Most recent Chicago credits include Eclipsed (Northlight Theatre), The Woman

Joanna Melville (Costume Designer) is back for her 5th costume design at Strawdog. Previous credits include The Master & Margarita, State of the Union, St. Crispin’s Day (Jeff Award) and Good Soul of Szechuan (co-design with ensemble member Aly Greaves Amidei). Other Chicago design credits include work at Lifeline, Quest, Backstage Theatre, Lakeside Shakespeare, and Shattered Globe. She is an alumna of Illinois State University (BA), and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she earned her M.F.A. in Theatre, specializing in Costume Design. Lindsey Miller (Stage Manager) is excited to be working with Strawdog and Kimberly for the first time. She is proud to be an ensemble member with BackStage Theatre Company, where she has stage managed several shows including the Jeff Nominated productions Waiting for Lefty, The Memory of Water, and On An Average Day. Lindsey has also worked with Lifeline Theater (Wuthering Heights), The Building Stage (The Ring Cycle), Circle Theatre (Stone Cold Dead Serious), CLIMB Theatre (Minneapolis, MN), and The Road Company (The Color Purple).

Michael Mroch (Assistant Scenic Design/Paint Charge) is graduating Columbia College with a BFA in Directing and Scenic Design. Recent design credits include: Dead Pile (XIII Pocket), Church/Pullman,WA (Red Tape), Dental Society Midwinter Meeting (16th Street Theatre), Bernarda Alba, Floyd Collins (Columbia). Michael Osinski (Assistant Director) first worked with Kimberly Senior over 10 years ago, when she got him

an internship at Steppenwolf. He recently returned to Chicago, after having spent time in Philadelphia as the founder and Artistic Director of Flashpoint Theatre Company, where he directed six Philadelphia premieres by Caryl Churchill, Sheila Callaghan, and Neil LaBute among others. Michael is thrilled to be returning to the Chicago theatre community once again.

Kimberly Senior*(Director) is pleased to return to Strawdog where she has directed Uncle Vanya, Cherry Orchard, Three Sisters, Fuddy Meers, and Knives in Hens as well as serving as a Strawdog Artistic Associate. She has worked professionally in Chicago in a variety of positions for the past sixteen years. Most recently, Kimberly directed Madagascar at Next Theatre, where she is also an Artistic Associate and previously directed The Overwhelming and The Busy World is Hushed. In addition, Kimberly recently directed The North Plan for Steppenwolf Theatre, All My Sons for TimeLine Theatre, Thieves Like Us for the House Theatre, Mauritius for TheatreSquared (Fayetteville, AR) and The Pillowman for RedTwist. She is the founder and company member emeritus of Collaboraction Theatre Company, where she directed and/or produced over thirty plays and theatrical experiences, most notably the company’s lauded Sketchbook festival for seven years. Kimberly also serves as an Artistic Associate with Chicago Dramatists (Feast, world premiere.) In addition, she has directed for Pegasus Players, University of Chicago, Columbia College Chicago, DePaul University, Adventure Stage Chicago, Estrogen Fest, Maxwell Street Historic Preservation Coalition, Rivendell Theatre Ensemble, Shakespeare’s Motley Crew, Northlight Theatre, Roadworks Productions, Northwestern University, College of DuPage, Oakton Community College, National Louis University, and WFMT Radio, among others. As an educator, Kimberly spent ten years as both an

administrator and Resident Artist with Steppenwolf for Young Adults. Kimberly has served as Program Director and as a dramaturge for Steppenwolf’s First Look Repertory of New Work. In addition, Kimberly either ran programs or taught for Court Theater, Northlight Theater, Redmoon Theater, Roadworks Productions, Victory Gardens, Metropolis, Act One Studios, and Acting Studio Chicago. Currently she is an adjunct faculty member at DePaul University where she teaches Theatrical Collaboration, University of Chicago where she teaches Advanced Scene Study and Columbia College where she teaches Chekhov, Dramaturgy and Text Analysis. She is the recipient of Columbia College’s 2010 Excellence in Teaching Award.

David Woolley, S.A.F.D (Fight Master) is pleased to be back at Strawdog. He is a Fight Master with the Society of American Fight Directors, Senior Lecturer at Columbia College Chicago, and Guido Crescendo in Dirk and Guido the Swordsmen! David has staged fights for over 500 productions since 1982. Most recent work includes: As You Like It (Chicago Shakespeare), Billy Elliott (Oriental Theater), David Cromer’s Streetcar Named Desire (Writers’ Theatre) and Cherrywood (Mary Arrchie), and The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity (Victory Gardens/Teatro Vista), and Second Stage, NYC, (playwright Kristoffer Diaz was nominated for a Pulitzer) and earned Woolley a 2010 Jeff Award for Fight Direction; He will be performing in his 22nd season as Guido at the Bristol and Ohio Renaissance Faires starting this summer. At Columbia College Chicago he oversees the violence needs of a burgeoning department (23 shows this semester!) and teaches three classes of combative arts.

This season’s motto was EXTRAORDINARY MATTERS and what an extraordinary season it has been, and I am truly grateful our friends and patrons have had the opportunity to enjoy this season along with us.

Season 23 has brought to us ‘State of the Union’, our Annual Phonebook Fundraising Performance, ‘The Master & Margari-ta’, now ‘Conquest of the South Pole’. This extraordinary list of work has been developed, nurtured, and made successful un-der the direction of our beloved Artistic Director, Nic Dimond. Please join me in thanking Nic for his extraordinary work this season and over the past seven Strawdog seasons.

Season 24 is shaping up to be extraordinary as well, with con-tributions from Strawdog Artistic Associates Kimberly Senior and Shade Murray, another Phonebook in the works, and the naming of a new Artistic Director.

As you know, our ability to continue to provide Chicago with the premiere storefront theatre experience is only possible because of your support.
