Tuesday 14

8 pm Tuesday Night with Virginia Barron. Berlioz: “Benvenuto Cellini.” Sir Colin Davis made this, the first recording of Berlioz’s very first opera in 1969. It was a revelation then, and it still astounds. The cast includes Nicolai Gedda as Cellini, who strives to cast his great statue of Perseus with the head of the Medusa while outwitting Pope Clement VII, sung by Jules Bastin. Christiane Eda-Pierre sings the role of Teresa, Cellini’s girlfriend. His faithful apprentice Ascanio, a trouser role, is assumed by Jane Berbier.

Tuesday 21

8 pm Tuesday Night with Virginia Barron. Janáček: “The Cunning Little Vixen.” This delightful opera follows the life a female fox brought home by a gamekeeper. The fox manages to avoid the household dog’s sexual advances and lures all of the gamekeeper’s chickens into her clutches. She escapes and finds love with a handsome fox. They have a litter of kits, which she protects and feeds with all the local fowl until finally she is shot dead. The opera closes with the grieving gamekeeper dreaming again of his lovely vixen. Charles Mackerras conducts with Lucia Popp as the Vixen and Dalibor Jedlička as the Gamekeeper.

Rimsky-Korsakov: “Sadko.” Sadko is the story of a minstrel who falls for one of the daughters of the Sea King, who first appear to him as swans over Lake Ilmen, southeast of St. Petersburg. They promise to supply him with the means to sail into the Baltic Sea, establishing the trade routes that will bring prosperity to his native city of Novgorod. Sadko’s voyage eventually brings him back to the shores of Lake Ilmen, but only after he visits the Sea King’s palace beneath the sea. Valery Gergiev leads the forces of the Kirov Opera with Vladimir Galusin singing the role of Sadko.
