IGOR STRAVINSKY a man of many styles (1882-1971) Blackheath Halls Music Appreciation Classes Monday mornings with Matthew Taylor Just as Beethoven bestrode his world at the start of the 19 th  century, so Stravinsky set out to shock his world of the early twentieth century and beyond. The three great ballets written before 1914, Firebird, Petrushka and The Rite of Spring were to cause shock waves. We will hear the slimmed down Stravinsky of the First World War (Renard and The Soldier’s Tale), the good mannered Stravinsky of his neo-classical period (Apollo, The Fairy’s Kiss and Pulcinella) and the serious Stravinsky (Symphony of Psalms and Oedipus Rex). There follows his American period including his violin concerto and two symphonies. And to finish is his later conversion to serialism.
