NEW MORIALTA SECONDARY COLLEGE

At a news conference this week the SA

Premier and Education Minister

announced the news that a new public

secondary school will be built to meet

growing enrolment demand in Adelaide’s

north eastern suburbs. One of our

Stradbroke School students, Caitlin,

confidently shared her thoughts about

attending the new High School in 2023.

The school will be built on the site of the

soon-to-be vacated Norwood Morialta High School Middle Campus. When

complete, it will cater to 1200 students from Year 7 to 12.

$84.4 million will be invested in the new secondary school in Adelaide’s

north eastern suburbs to completely remove the site’s ageing buildings and

replace them with contemporary learning facilities. The existing oval and

soccer pitch will be retained.

The new school will be named Morialta Secondary College. The name was

chosen with input from a panel of local educators and more than 200

members of the public who made suggestions.

The proposed new zone will take in the suburbs of Hectorville and Rostrevor,

and parts of Magill, Tranmere, Woodforde, Teringie, Montacute and Norton

Summit.

The zones of Norwood Morialta High School, Marryatville High School and

Charles Campbell College will change to relieve enrolment pressure and

accommodate the new secondary school.

The new school will be ready to accept Year 7 enrolments in 2023, with a

wider intake scheduled from 2024. A school zone and enrolment process will

be announced prior to May 2022.

Families interested in enrolling their children for Year 7 in 2023 can submit

their registration of interest in Term 2 2022. This will be part of the state-

TERRIFIC KIDS – TERM 3

At the end of last term the winners of the Term 3 Kiwanis

Terrific Kids Award were announced. This year, Terrific Kids

were nominated from both the Year 6 and Year 7 student

cohort. We are pleased to be able to recognise students from

both year levels in their final year of primary school.

A Terrific Kid needs to be:

THOUGHTFUL ENTHUSIASTIC RESPECTFUL

RESPONSIBLE INFLUENTIAL FRIENDLY

IMPECCABLE CARING

These qualities align closely with the characteristics and

attitudes of the IB Learner Profile. The characteristics we

expect IB students to display are those of a person who is an

inquirer, knowledgeable, courageous, a thinker, a

communicator, open minded, balanced, principled, reflective

and caring.

The attitudes supporting these characteristics are

appreciation, commitment, confidence, cooperation, curiosity,

creativity, empathy, enthusiasm, independence, integrity,

respect and tolerance.

Congratulations to our Year 7 recipients, Indurani and Alexios

and our Year 6 recipients, Ali and Cameron. They are

outstanding ambassadors for our school and they approach all

aspects of school life in a balanced, considerate and

enthusiastic manner.

DEPARTMENT FOR EDUCATION COVID-19 UPDATE

End of year events can go ahead providing SA government

health advice is strictly followed;

• face masks must be worn on site

• visitors to the site must check in using the site’s COVID

SAfe QR code at the entry to the site, a hard copy sign in

sheet is available for those without smart phones at the

Front Office.

• physical distancing and room density (3 per 4 sqm density

for indoor seated events and 1 per 2 sqm for non-seated

indoor activities) must be practiced

• hygiene is strictly followed. No one should be present if

unwell, even mildly.

Please note that planned events may be subject to sudden

change or cancellation in accordance with the latest SA public

health advice. If events are cancelled or capacity numbers

change due to capacity restrictions livestreaming, photos or

other technology will be used to record and share the event(s)

with families.

HEALTH CENTRE

‘Medication’ includes all prescribed, non-prescribed, over the

counter and alternative therapies (vitamins, minerals,

supplements) that are administered in an education or care

service. Education and care services can only administer

medication orally, aurally, inhaled or topically.

Medication that requires administration three times per day can

generally be administered from home outside of school hours (in

the morning, after school and in the evening).

The attached Medication in education and care services:

information for families provides an overview of the procedure

and an outline of the responsibilities for parents and legal

guardians.

SAFETY ADVICE FOR DRIVERS

To avoid accidents it's important for parents/caregivers who

drive to follow safety rules.

To maintain a safe and orderly traffic flow. Safety instructions

include:

• observing school speed limits - there's a 25 km zone

around schools when children are present

• not parking in no standing zones or across school

entrances

• respecting local neighbours and their right to access their

driveways

• not double parking

• ensuring that children exit their car onto the footpath.

Remember that local councils enforce parking regulations and

police will take action against traffic offences.

The car parks on school grounds are reserved for staff and

disability access.

HONOUR BOARD

We are very proud of the following students for demonstrating

the key learner profile attributes of being caring, courageous,

communicators and principled. I look forward to

acknowledging and recognising the work of more of our senior

students as the year progresses.

Ivy Di Marco – for her work helping the charity the Australian

Red Cross and her continued support of her peers in her class.

CANTEEN

Welcome to Term 4, I hope everyone had a nice break from the

normal school routine!

TERM 4 LUNCH MENU: As Summer is now upon us, we have

deleted the wedges packs and reintroduced the FRUIT SALAD

TUBS $5.00 and SLUSHY $2.00 the slushy flavours this term are

Lemon-Lime and Watermelon. (Please note that the slushy

that is approved for use in schools under the Healthy Eating

Guidelines, is 99% apple juice and has no added sugar.)

FRIDAY TREAT DAYS: This week: Pasta with Bolognaise sauce

$5.00 Potato and Leek Soup with a Bread Roll $3.00. Next

Friday is a Pupil Free Day. Qkr will be updated as we change

any Friday menu.

DATES TO REMEMBER: Wednesday 1 December Christmas

Lunch, more details will be provided closer to the event. Friday

10 December. The Canteen will be closed for all recess and

lunch service on the last day of school.

VOLUNTEERS: We would really appreciate helpers on the

following dates either 9.00am- 10.30am OR 11.00am-1.30pm.

Thursday 21, Friday 29 October or Friday 5 November. If you

are available, please let me know by popping into the Canteen

or leaving a message with the Front Office staff and I will

contact you.

Qkr: It is really important that your child's details are correct

under their profile on the APP. If you have been emailed and

asked to make any changes, please update your app. I cannot

access anyone's information to make these changes. Please

use the name that your child is called at school by the teachers,

which may not necessarily be their official birthname. The

PROFILE on Qkr is that of the student and not the parent.

Please also use their correct class number ie: F1 and FR1 are in

different buildings and this leads to a lot of confusion and

misplaced lunches. This is especially important as we are

having whole school events this term such as the Sports Day

fundraisers (Socks, Gelati and BBQ) and then the Christmas

lunch.

BEGINNER INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC LESSONS FOR 2022

Stradbroke School is fortunate to be able to

offer specialist instrumental music lessons

for Year 3-6 students. These 30 minute

lessons are conducted by DfE Instrumental

Music teachers during normal lesson time.

These lessons are available to students not

receiving tuition privately. We offer violin,

viola and cello for Years 3-6 and classical guitar for Years 5-6

students. We are now accepting expressions of interest for

beginners in 2022. If your child would like to learn an

instrument and will be in Year 3-6 in 2022, please complete the

e-form on the Skoolbag app or collect a form from Student

Services and return it by Friday 29 October. An

audition/interview process (no previous experience necessary)

will be held in late November/early December and available

vacancies allocated. Students who have private lessons for an

instrument are not eligible for IMS lessons for the same

instrument but can be considered for the string ensemble.

BUGS ‘N’ SLUGS INCURSION

As part of our PYP Unit of Inquiry ‘Sharing the Planet’, the Year

1 classes were learning how to classify minibeasts into

different groups including arachnids, myriapods, insects and

molluscs. We investigated the features of these groups looking

at their body parts and the number of legs. Kris Messenger

from Bugs ‘N’ Slugs came in to visit, bringing lots of different

minibeasts for us to explore. We got to hold beetles in our

hands and we watched slugs race. We got to investigate stick

insects, beetles, hermit crabs and spiders using a magnifying

glass. We even got to see the biggest worm ever! We had fun

exploring Bugs ‘N’ Slugs with Kris.

Placement of Children

in Classes for 2022

Planning for next year’s classes will begin soon. In making recommendations about class composition, teachers

consider factors such as:

learning needs

gender balance

year level balance

social and emotional maturity

children with special needs and talents

social dynamics (which children to keep together and

which to keep apart)

friendship groups

the number of children per class.

Parents are invited to write a short letter to the Principal if you have specific information about the needs of your

child that we may not have access to. Please include your child’s name, current year level and each student’s requirements on a separate page (not one family letter).

Please do not make requests for a specific teacher. Due to enrolment numbers it is highly likely we will have

composite classes, please do not make requests for your child to be or not be in a composite class. Be aware that

not all requests can be met, in past years some letters have included 5-6 specific requests for one child and it is

very unlikely that these can all be accommodated. If you do have more than one request please write them in

priority order so that we know which aspects of your request are most important to you.

Please place your letter in an envelope addressed to Tanya Scanlan and send them to the Front Office.

Parent letters are due by 4pm on Wednesday 27 October 2021.

Parent information will be considered along with factors considered by our teachers and those listed above.

Only information based on educational criteria will be considered.

A copy of your letter will be made available to the class teachers who make the placements.

A copy of the school class placement policy is on the school website.

Classroom teachers use a range of processes to ask children to nominate friends with whom they wish to be

placed. It is preferable that parents do not write about friendship requests to us, unless there are serious issues.

At this stage class structures are not definite and the final allocation of teachers to classes, which will take place

late in the term, is affected by the appointment of teachers.

Who makes the final decision?

Staff will do their best to meet your child's needs. You can be assured that we spend a great deal of time and effort

in accommodating and allocating children to classes.

It is the responsibility of the Principal to make the final decision on classes and placement

of students.

When will children and parents know about class placements?

If possible, class placement information will be sent home with students in the last week

of term. After that date children's class placements will not be changed unless there are

extenuating circumstances.

If you choose to provide information about your child, please ensure that requests are included in a short letter

and sent to the Principal no later than 4pm on Wednesday 27 October 2021.

Kind regards,

Tanya Scanlan

Dear Parents and Families,

Information about Materials and Services Charge 2022

Overleaf you will find the notice advising of the composition of the Materials and

Services Charge for 2022.

We are proud of the learning facilities and the exceptional programmes we provide for

our students at Stradbroke School. In order to maintain and continuously improve what

we offer, we rely on the financial support of our families. The annual Materials and

Services Charge contributes to the funds available to support your students’ learning.

The Charge is intended to cover the costs of those essential items and services

used or consumed by individual students during the course of their study.

The level of the Materials and Services Charge must reflect the actual cost of the

goods and services provided for the Charge.

The invoice for the Materials and Services Charge must match the notice by

showing the composition and associated cost of the total Charge.

We believe that the annual Materials and Services Charge represents excellent value for

the year’s educational program.

Please note that the School Card grant covers the first $253.00 of the fees in 2022, and

the scheme for payment of fees by instalments will be available as in previous years.

More information about these facilities will be available when fees are invoiced.

If you have any questions about the charge please contact the School Finance Officer, by

calling 8337 2861 and press 2.

Parents are invited to attend the next Governing Council meeting (details below) at

which the Material and Services Charge will be discussed and set for 2022. This meeting

is a normal Governing Council meeting and we are required to advise you about it under

non-seated indoor activities) must be practiced

Hygiene is strictly followed. No one should be present if unwell, even mildly.

What is medication?

For the Department for Education the term

‘medication’ includes all prescribed, non-

prescribed, over the counter and alternative

therapies (vitamins, minerals and supplements)

that are required to be administered in

education and care services.

‘Medication’ in education and care does not

include sunscreen, nappy rash cream,

moisturising lip balm, lubricating eye drops or

moisturiser (emollient) where they are un-

prescribed.

Administration routes

Education and care services can only administer

medication optically (eye drops), aurally (ear

drops), orally (via the mouth), inhaled (through

the mouth or nose) or topically (on the skin).

Education and care staff cannot administer any

medication that is injected or administered

rectally.

Where your child has alternative or complex

medication requirements they may be eligible to

be supported by the Access Assistant Program or

the RN Delegation of Care Program.

More information on the AAP or RNDCP can be found on the

Department for Education website www.education.sa.gov.au

3x per day administration

Generally, medication that requires

administration three times per day can be

administered from home outside of school hours

(in the morning, after school and in the evening)

and does not require administration in an

education service.

First dose of a new medication

Your child cannot be administered a first dose of

a new medication at an education or care

service. Due to the dangers of an adverse

reaction the first dose should be supervised by

you or a health professional.

An exception to this is where emergency

medications are prescribed (ie midazolam or

adrenaline).

Authority to administer

Medication cannot be administered in an

education or care service without written advice

from you on a Medication Agreement.

The Medication Agreement must be authorised

by a health professional if the medicine is insulin,

oxygen, a controlled drug or pain relief that

needs to be taken regularly or more than 3x in a

week.

Medication agreements can be accessed on the Department for

Education website www.education.sa.gov.au

Education and care staff cannot administer

medication where

• a medication agreement is not in place,

• a medication agreement has been

modified, overwritten or is illegible,

• any of the ‘medication rights’ are in

doubt

• medications are injected or administered

rectally

Where a completed medication agreement is not

available arrangements can be made for you to

attend the site and administer the medication to

your child.

Your responsibilities

It is your responsibility to provide the education

or care service with medication and any

administration equipment.

Where possible you should provide and collect

your child’s medication in person. Where this is

not possible safe methods of transport and

transfer should be discussed and agreed with the

education or care service.

All medication must be provided in an original

pharmacy container and have a clear pharmacy

label with:

• your child’s name

• date of dispensing

• name of medication

• strength of medication

• dose (how much to give)

• when it should be given

• length of treatment or end date (where

appropriate)

• any other administration instructions

(ie to be taken with food)

• expiry date (where there is no expiry

date the medication must have been

dispensed within the last 6 months)

Medication that is labelled PRN, to be taken as

directed or similar does not provide sufficient

information and cannot be administered in the

education or care service.

An exception to this is where a doctor has

completed an Individual First Aid Plan, or your

child has been approved to administer their own

medication through the completion of a Decision

making tool for medication administration.

These forms can be accessed on the Department for Education

website www.education.sa.gov.au

Site responsibilities

The education and care service has a duty of care

to take reasonable precautions while your child

is in their care.

In this instance reasonable precautions would be

ensuring your child is presenting for their

medication administration and that the

medication is administered as directed by the

health professional or pharmacist.

Site leaders must ensure staff are available and

appropriately trained to administer medication

to your child during attendance at the education

or care service and during school related

activities.

To keep your child safe two staff will be present

(except for single staff services) during

medication administration.

Each time medication is administered to your

child in an education or care service the

Medication Rights Checklist is followed as

standard measures for safe administration

practices to reduce medication errors and harm.

The Medication Log must be completed each

time medication is administered or when

medication was required but could not be

administered. A copy of the Medication Log is

forwarded to you when it is full or when the

medication is no longer required.

These forms can be accessed on the Department for Education

website www.education.sa.gov.au

Medication advice form

A Medication Advice Form will be completed and

forwarded to you when

• medication has not been administered;

this may include when your child has

refused to take the medication, or when

any of the medication rights are in doubt

• a medication incident has occurred;

including a medication error or near miss

• post administration observations are

required to be documented and

communicated to you or a health

professional

In all of these instances you will be notified

immediately to determine if alternative

arrangements are required.

All medication management information and

documents, including the Department for

Education medication management procedure

A MESSAGE TO PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS FROM Professor Nicola Spurrier,

Chief Public Health Officer

Dear parents and caregivers,

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a worrying time for all of us.

The Delta COVID-19 variant is twice as infectious as the original COVID-19 strain and there are

now more cases in children and young people.

Vaccination is the best way to protect you, your family, and your friends from getting sick, and

reduce the risk of outbreaks and school closures.

I encourage everyone aged 12 years and over in your household to get vaccinated against

COVID-19 as soon as possible.

COVID-19 vaccines in Australia are safe and many millions of Australians are already protected.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has recommended both the

Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for people aged 12 years and over in Australia.

Consent from a parent/caregiver for COVID-19 vaccination is required for anyone under the

age of 16.

To find a location to get vaccinated and book, visit covidvaccine.sa.gov.au

SA Health has lots of information to help answer questions, including videos, fact sheets and

a range of other resources. For more information, visit covidvaccine.sa.gov.au

Thank you for keeping South Australia COVID safe. Please join me in being a fully

vaccinated family.

Yours sincerely

PROFESSOR NICOLA SPURRIER
