Sculpture in the Park exhibitionthrives as city art destination

By CAROL [email protected]

If someone really wants toimpress an out-of-town guest– and if they really want toshow new visitors the best St.Charles has to offer – then avisit to the Sculpture in thePark exhibition at Mt. St.Mary Park is the thing to do.That’s what one North Shorewoman did for her mother onMother’s Day, specifically tosee “Rescue Kitty,” the secondSculpture in the Park entryby Sawyer, Michigan, artistMartha Cares.

“She loves your park andplans to bring her motherback for some exercise on aregular basis,” said Cares.

Whether they come forthe art or for the atmosphere, patrons who visit the parkbetween now and the end ofSeptember will find them-selves immersed in the best ofboth worlds.

Serenely nestled on thewest bank of the scenic FoxRiver, there is no more pictur-esque spot in the city, nor onewith a more impressive arrayof world-class public art.

From Tucson-based PokeyPark, whose whimsical bronzeanimals joyfully express alove of nature, to Kenosha,Wisconsin, sculptor BruceNiemi’s soaring stainless-steeltowers that float above thepark like silver wings, the va-riety of the 13 pieces providedby 12 talented sculptors fromaround the country and re-gion exhibits a wide range ofmedia and infinite interpreta-tions of nature and the humancondition.

“It’s a very contemplativeshow,” said Jane David-son, one of two St. Charlessculptors participating thisyear. “I love the setting. Youcan walk from one piece to

another with enough time tothink about them or sit on abench and ponder the artist’sintentions.” Davidson, whose300-pound stainless steelsculpture is entitled “Truth,”is a first-time participant inthis year’s show.

Indeed, interacting witheach sculpture is as individu-al an experience as the piecesthemselves.

For fellow St. Charlessculptor Douglas Eageny, whoworks with elements fromnature and recycled materi-als, the medium is a messagein and of itself.

This year’s entry rep-resents Eageny’s fourthSculpture in the Park exhibit, and while his metal-and-stonesculpture “Whirlwind” hasa specific meaning to him,“people see it and it mightrepresent something entirelydifferent to them.”

The response to Cares’“Rescue Kitty” sculpture isnot so ambiguous.

A fierce advocate for shel-ter animals, Cares followedup her 2013 “My Rescue Dog”sculpture with a beguiling, smiling gray cat – both piecespart of her mission to createawareness of the millionsof animals helped by rescueorganizations and shelterseach year.

“I want people to see mywork and feel the heartwarm-ing emotion that anyone whohas ever cherished a pet has

experienced,” said Cares,“but I also want them to hon-or the people who generouslydevote themselves to animalrescue and, ideally, becomeinspired to become part ofthat effort.”

Now in its ninth year, thisfree annual celebration is ajoint venture between the St.Charles Park District and theSt. Charles Park Foundation.

This year’s entrants canbe found situated along ahalf-mile walking path andjoin eight sculptures fromprior shows permanently ondisplay.

From the massive,2,500-pound, fire-engine red, steel sculpture “Here” byChicago artist Ruth AizussMigdal to the diminutive28-pound bronze “Ballerina”by Lake in the Hills artist Pa-tricia Brutchin, all sculpturesare for sale. Prices can rangefrom $1,200 to $70,000.

But for visitors who haveneither the budget nor the set-ting for a one-of-a-kind pieceof public art, yet still want atangible memory of their visit, smaller, tabletop replicas ofMartha Cares’ two sculptures,“My Rescue Kitty,” and 2013’s“My Rescue Dog” are forsale at $75 and $150, respec-tively, at both the Baker and

Pottawatomie communitycenters.

For the artists, just beingin the Sculpture in the Parkshow is memory enough. “Iwas fascinated by the installa-tion of my sculpture and tookdozens of pictures,” said Da-vidson, who couldn’t envisionthe machinations involvedin wrangling a massive yetfragile work of art into place.“These gentlemen from thepark district’s maintenancedepartment are real pros atwhat they do.”

Eageny eagerly agrees.“The park district and thecommission were supportiveand encouraging of me andmy art, and they are doingimportant work by bringingpeople downtown and lettingvisitors know that the citysupports artists and is com-mitted to the beautification ofthe city,” he said.

Indeed, the Sculpture inthe Park exhibition attractsthousands of visitors annual-ly. So whether one is playingtour guide for a house guestor simply wants to spend atranquil afternoon surround-ed by the beauty providedby Mother Nature and thetalented artists she inspires,Mt. St. Mary Park is the place

to be this summer.

This year’sSculpture in thePark exhibitionatMt. St. MaryPark includes 13pieces providedby 12 nation-wide sculptors. The park islocated east ofRoute 31 andsouth of PrairieStreet in St.Charles.Photo provided

St. John Neumann pastor has array of life experiencesBy [email protected]

ST. CHARLES – After fourdecades and a few job titles, theRev. David Peck once again isback in the community wherehe grew up.

This month, Peck, whoturned 58 July 20, completedhis first full year as pastor ofSt. John Neumann CatholicChurch in St. Charles. Besidesa one-year stint as associatepastor at St. Patrick Churchon the city’s west side, mostof Peck’s life in the priesthoodhas been serving other Illinoiscommunities. He welcomesthe return to the place wherehis parents still live. His dis-tant cousins belong to the fam-ily who once owned the farm-land that now is Peck FarmPark in Geneva.

“I walked these streets as ateenager ... obviously, there’sbeen a lot of growth,” he said.

Like Kane County, Peck hasdeveloped over the past few

decades with an array of lifeexperiences. He has law andbusiness experience, speaksconversational Spanish and isalso a certified firefighter. TheSt. Charles police and fire de-partments heard about Peck’sexperience and certificationand in fall 2013 asked him to be-come their volunteer chaplain.

The departments have notyet summoned Peck on a call, but he is ready to assist at anemergency day or night. Peckfirst took firefighter courseswhen he was a fire chaplainfrom 2000 to 2009 in Rochelle, where he served as pastor of

that city’s St. Patrick Parish. To have someone with his

background willing to do thisfor the department is a tremen-dous asset, said David Kintz, aSt. Charles deputy police chief. The St. Charles police and firedepartments each have gonewithout a chaplain in the pastfew years, with the fire depart-ment having been without achaplain for more than a decade.

Peck’s experience in Crit-ical Incident Stress Manage-ment also can help any officersor firefighters struggling tocope with responding to a trau-matic event, said Leo Vesel-ing, a St. Charles fire captainand St. John Neumann Parishmember.

Veseling said he has becomefriends with Peck, who doesn’thesitate to participate in policeofficer training sessions or aswiftwater rescue class.

“I think that gives him anupper hand over other chap-lains,” Veseling said. “He’shad the training, it gives him

the credibility.”Peck admits he is an adren-

aline junkie and is not afraidof fires. He believes what he isdoing with all his skills is hisgift back to God.

“I was drawn by God to thepriesthood,” Peck said. “I re-ally believe that that’s what Iwas always meant to be, but Ishied away from it.”

Peck first changed coursewhen he moved to New Yorkand attended law school fortwo years while working atvarious firms. Then, he movedto the business world, workingin mergers and acquisitions.

Even though Peck built uphis professional career, hesaid he did not have a sense ofpeace and fulfillment. That’swhen he considered becominga man of the cloth, thinkingback to his days at Mount St.Mary’s Academy in St. Charlesand Sacred Heart Seminary inGeneva, which now is the siteof the Kane County Govern-ment Center.

“This is my 20th year as apriest, and it’s the best thingI’ve ever done,” Peck said.

Area residents, like those atthe Delnor Glen assisted livingcommunity in St. Charles, lookforward to the weekly Eucha-ristic Service and the monthlyMass from Father Peck, saidCathy Duer, Delnor Glen’smarketing and sales director.Delnor Glen has been associat-ed with St. John Neumann forthe past 15 years, she said.

“Father Peck always hastime for the residents and hisexplanations of the readingsfor the day are received withgreat appreciation,” Duer said.

Peck said he is embar-rassed to talk about his accom-plishments, but he hopes hislife experiences can help servethe community.

“I don’t think they defineme,” Peck said of his acco-lades. “I think what defines meis my relationship with Godand with people. That’s what

I’m proud of.”

While most diabetics do not experience anything

other than minor eye problems, nearly four million

adults diagnosed with diabetes report more serious

trouble with their vision. In some cases, patients

with diabetes can develop a condition called

“diabetic macular edema” (DME), which involves

fluid leakage into the macula (the central portion

of the retina that allows for sharp, straightforward

vision). As the fluid swells the macula, vision

blurs. To treat this condition, the FDA approved

ranibizumab (Lucentis), which a recent study

shows to be effective in improving and maintaining

vision over the course of three years. Moreover, as

vision improves, fewer injections of ranibizumab

are needed. The medication is generally well

tolerated.

P.S. Laser therapy can be used to reduce

moderate vision loss in patients with clinically

significant macular edema.

Committee supports new race

over agency’s running eventBy CHARLES [email protected]

ST. CHARLES – A St.

Charles City Council commit-

tee on July 28 supported a fu-

ture downtown 12k event over

concerns from a local agency

that holds a running event on

the same day.

The St. Charles Govern-

ment Services Committee

on July 28 voted 5-0 in favor

of recommending approval

for street and parking lot clo-

sures, as well as use of am-

plification equipment for the

2014 St. Charles 12k of Christ-

mas.

The 12k event is scheduled

at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 6 in down-

town St. Charles, and at 9 a.m.

that same day. TriCity Family

Services plan to hold its Snow-

flake Shuffle 5k fundraising

event in the Mill Creek subdi-

vision in Geneva Township.

The agency, which provides

various mental health services

for Tri-Cities residents, is con-

cerned that the 12k event will

impact the Shuffle, said Hallie

Hudson, TriCity Family Ser-

vices development associate,

at the meeting.

“Due to the cutbacks in

state and local funding, the

agency is increasingly relying

on proceeds raised from this

event,” Hudson said to com-

mittee members at the meet-

ing.

Jim Martin, the committee

chairman and 4th Ward alder-

man, asked that the issue come

before the full St. Charles City

Council as a separate item

because four aldermen were

absent at the time of the com-

mittee vote. The Government

Services Committee is com-

prised of all 10 aldermen on the

City Council.

Danny Delgado at the

meeting represented Multis-

port Madness, the group that

is proposing the 12k race. He

said all marketing efforts for

the event have been geared to-

ward half-marathon runners

and that the group does not

intend to take away from the

Snowflake Shuffle.

Delgado said Multisport

Madness will consider giving

a portion of its proceeds from

the 12k race to TriCity Family

Services.

St. Charles Deputy Police

Chief Steve Huffman said

there are six residents who

responded to Multisport Mad-

ness’ letters to the commu-

nity about the event. Four of

the residents were in support

of the race and the other two

sought more information,

Huffman said.

Chris Walk sheds lighton substance abuse

By CHARLES [email protected]

GENEVA – The Chris Walk

Night Out Against Substance

Abuse on July 26 drew people

from beyond Kane County.

Among the event’s attend-

ees were Kathy Whitehead of

Elk Grove, her sister, Karen

Berrios, of Streamwood, and

Whitehead’s sponsor, Pattie

Cabana of Barrington.

“It’s a good cause with great

people and very organized,”

Whitehead said.

The three women were

part of the 100 participants in

a 5K race during the event’s

seventh annual outing, which

took place this year at Gunnar

Anderson Forest Preserve, 719

S. Batavia Ave., Geneva.

In addition to the runners

and walkers, the event drew

dozens more people who gath-

ered around several vendors,

information booths, raffles

and a silent auction.

This year also was the first

time attendees could sign up

for a one-hour Zumba workout,

and its first at the forest pre-

serve, said Vicki Foley, a Shaw

Media employee who started

the event. Chris Walk is named

after Foley’s son, Chris, who

died of a heroin overdose on

July 15, 2007. He was 27.Chris Walk celebrates the

lives of those lost, such asFoley’s son, and also bringsawareness to the battle againstsubstance abuse everywhere.

“This is not a police prob-lem; this is a societal prob-lem,” Kane County Sheriff PatPerez said at the event.

Perez – and also Kane Coun-ty Coroner Rob Russell – inseparate speeches talked aboutthe need for groups to pool re-sources and work together tomake a difference.

Russell said he does notwant to see young residentsbrought to the morgue whohave died of a heroin or otherdrug overdose.

Cody Lewis, 22, of Aurora, shared his struggle with her-oin addiction at the event. Hehas been sober since October2013 and said coming to eventslike Chris Walk helps him stayclean.

Foley hugged and thankedLewis for being honest abouthis addiction and told hismother, who also was at theevent, that she knew exactlywhat she was going through.

“Things like this will hope-fully make people more awareso they won’t start [down that

path],” Foley said.

Jeff Krage – For Shaw Media

A crowd waits at the finish line for runners to complete Saturday’sChris Walk 5K run at Gunnar Anderson Forest Preserve in Geneva. Theevent raises awareness and funds to support the fight against sub-stance abuse.

A LASTING FRIENDSHIP

By ERIC [email protected]

GENEVA – Bob and Sandi Boel-ke did not realize when they hostedDenmark foreign exchange studentFrederik Liberti in 1996 that theirrelationship with him would turn intoa lifelong friendship.

The couple in May went to Copen-hagen for two weeks to visit him. Hehas visited them nine times.

Kane County Chronicle EricSchelkopf spoke to Sandi Boelke aboutthe recent trip to see Liberti, who is 33now and has a family.

Eric Schelkopf: What made you want to

visit him this year?

Sandi Boelke: We wanted to meet hismother, whom we had never met. Andnow he has two children and a wife.So it was our turn to go there.

Schelkopf: So, you’ve literally seen him

grow up over the years.

Boelke: Exactly. We keep in touchthrough Skype and his return visits, and we write notes and call him.

Schelkopf: What made you want to host a

foreign exchange student in the first place?

Boelke: I felt like I really wanted mychildren to understand the differentcultures and the different ways ofEurope. And I do believe that theylearned quite a bit from him.

He lived with us for a year. He wentthrough Geneva High School and com-pleted his senior year there.

His very favorite teacher there wasRoxanne Curtis, the music teacher. And she did teach him a lot. He was inmany of the groups, like the jazz groupand the different groups that she hadfor the music students.

And he always played guitar up in

his room.

Schelkopf: And now he fronts his own

band.

Boelke: He does.

Schelkopf: He was at your house for a

year. What types of things did you try to

introduce him to?

Boelke: Well, of course, we wentinto Chicago, and we went to the iceskating rink. We went to lots of placesaround Kane County, like the KaneCounty Fair.

We took him to Springfield, sohe could see all of the culture of ourstate. We also took him to DisneyWorld in Orlando, and he accompa-nied our family to Niagara Falls.

Schelkopf: This was the first time you had

been to Copenhagen. What did you think? Did

it live up to your expectations?

Boelke: It was a very, very oldcountry. And I’ve never seen so muchcobblestone in my whole entire life.

You know how everything is pavedhere? It was all cobblestone there.

But it was a very unique country, and very beautiful. We took a rideon a Viking ship, which was reallyincredible.

Schelkopf: When was the last time he

visited you here?

Boelke: Three years ago. He camehere for a week, and then he went tosee the Redwoods in California.

Schelkopf: Did you think this relationship

would last this long?

Boelke: No, I never would have imag-ined that we would become so close. Inall sense of the word, he is my son.

He loves having two mothers. Hecalls me “mom,” but he also calls hismother “mom.”

It was strange being there with hismom. He would say “mom,” and wewould both look.

Schelkopf: Since he visits you so much,

obviously he sees himself as your son as well.

He must have a good bond with your family.

Boelke: We’ve had other foreignexchange students, but he is the onlyone who really clicked with us. Andthat happens.

The other ones were a little bitmore distant. But he just fell in withour family.

He was a lot like us. Also, he wasgreat at the high school. He fit in withthe kids, and he loved being there. Heappreciated it.

Schelkopf: Have your children gotten to

see him over the years as well?

Boelke: Yes. My daughter and herhusband went with us to Copenhagen, and when we Skype, we try to includethem as much as possible.

Schelkopf: So, do you see yourself hosting

any more foreign exchange students in the

future?

Boelke: We possibly might getinvolved again. It was more for whenthe kids were in high school, but Ido see us doing it again, just to havesomeone who needs a place to stay.

Schelkopf: For someone thinking of host-

ing a foreign exchange student, what would

you say the benefits are?

Boelke: Well, you can teach everyonein the household about other culturesand different societies.

But he did speak English very, verywell, and that was a plus. The Daneslearn English in fifth grade, so theystart very early. There was no lan-guage barrier. He spoke as well as us.

Also, you learn from each other. There is no doubt that we learned a lotfrom him, and he learned a lot fromus.

GENEVA – Living in theMidwest may not always provideample opportunities to enjoy thefresh, “off the boat” catches youwould expect to find in states bor-dering the Atlantic Ocean, PacificOcean or Gulf of Mexico. But get-ting fresh seafood in the Chicagosuburbs is not an impossible feat.

Located in the Dodson Placeplaza overlooking tree-lined 3rdStreet in downtown Geneva, isthe upscale American restaurantWildwood, and every Thursday itreceives a shipment of fresh oys-ters, which it serves on Thursday. And – so I was told – the restau-rant also has a tendency to sellout on Thursday, providing itsdining clientele ample opportuni-ty for fresh fare.

The Oyster Bar opens in theWildwood lounge beginning at5 p.m. It’s not a buffet – you stillorder from a menu. The OysterBar menu is usually posted on therestaurant website the day beforeso customers know exactly fromwhere the next day’s shipmentsof oysters are hailing. Normally,Wildwood offers four differentkinds of oysters on the half shell– two from the East Coast and twofrom the West Coast. The menualso includes Peel ’N Eat Shrimp,New England Clam Chowder anddiscounted Prosecco, rose andsparkling wine ($5.50 a glass).

My dining companion and Ientered the lounge around 5:30

p.m. and – with the unexpected70-degree weather in July – decid-ed to sit outside at one of Wild-wood’s outdoor patios, where afew tables already were settled bypeople slurping oysters, peelingshrimp and exploring Wildwood’ssimple-yet-wonderful Oyster Barmenu.

Only three of the four oysteroptions had made it in on timethat particular Thursday, sowe ordered three ($7.50) of theDelaware oysters from DelawareBay, New Jersey; and three ($7.50)of the Fanny Bay oysters fromBaynes Sound British Columbia,Canada.

They also can be ordered bythe half dozen ($12) and dozen($20).

We also ordered the clamchowder ($6) and a dozen Peel ’NEat Shrimp ($8).

18 Chicago Irish band The Tossers to perform in AuroraBy ERIC SCHELKOPF

[email protected]

Since 1993, Chicago bandThe Tossers has been en-tertaining crowds with itsenergetic blend of Irish folkand punk rock.

The Tossers will performSaturday, Aug. 2, at the all-day Fox Valley Irish Festivalat RiverEdge Park, 360 N.Broadway, Aurora. Moreinformation is available bygoing to RiverEdge’s website,www.riveredgeaurora.com.

Kane County Chroniclereporter Eric Schelkopf hadthe chance to talk to The Toss-ers lead singer Tony Dugginsabout the upcoming show.

Eric Schelkopf: Of course, you

guys are going to be at the Fox

Valley Irish Festival with two other

Irish bands from Illinois. Does that

make it even more of a special

occasion?

Tony Duggins: I’m sure itwill. We’ll play with anybody.

Schelkopf: Of course, The Toss-

ers celebrated its 20th anniversary

last year. What should people

expect when they come out this

weekend? Are you going to play

songs from your entire career?

Duggins: We’re going to do asong off every record at least,as well as hopefully some newsongs and some old tradition-al stuff, too.

Schelkopf: What were your

goals in starting the band in the

first place?

Duggins: We were 18 yearsold. We were just trying to getinto bars and play music and

have a good time. That was it. That was

really it. And then peoplestarted coming to the showsand we started getting showsat bigger clubs, and it went onfrom there.

It was the people’s re-sponse to it, really. We werejust having a good time.

Schelkopf: Are you surprised

that people connected so well to

your music and that here you are 20

years later?

Duggins: I always knew thatI was going to try to make a

career out of music. I didn’tnecessarily know it would bewith this group.

I assumed back then wewould be just playing in barsand at festivals and stuff. Itis a pleasant surprise thatwe’re still doing it after allthis time.

Schelkopf: Being that you are

from the South Side of Chicago, was

it a given that you guys would be in

an Irish band?

Duggins: Maybe, the waythat fate turns out. You aresurrounded by that [culture]

in Chicago. We were.I was never into Irish mu-

sic as a kid because I didn’tthink it was cool. As I gotolder, I started getting intomore music than just punkrock and heavy metal.

Schelkopf: Were there any

bands that led you to the fact that

Irish music could be cool?

Duggins: Yeah, The Pogues, hands down. They are thebest.

Schelkopf: What do you think

your band has brought to Irish

music?

Duggins: What we did bringwas a contemporary turn toit, like The Pogues did. All thebands that kind of do what wedo all have a slightly differentbent on how they approach it.

The real thing that we’veadded to it is a place, inChicago especially, wherepeople can come together andcelebrate their heritage.

Schelkopf: Of course, your

brother, Aaron, is in the band, too.

I imagine there are pros and cons

about having a sibling in the same

band. Are there more pros than

cons?

Duggins: We may argue overstuff from time to time, butbelieve me, that’s very rare. We’re pretty much all on thesame page as far as the musicgoes.

My brother is probably isone of the greatest assets wehave in this band. Every one ofus performs as best as we can.

Schelkopf: There are a lot of

references to Chicago on your last

album, “The Emerald City.” Would

you say that it is your most personal

album to date?

Duggins: It is. I felt like Ireally needed to represent my-self a lot more on the albumand where I come from.

It was time to make a hom-age to Chicago and my familyand my friends.

At the end of the day, thisis the reason why we aredoing it. It is a celebrationof culture and family andfriends.

And really, it is a celebra-tion of our lives in this city.

Our oysters came shuckedand presented on ice with freshlemons, champagne mignonettesauce, Tabasco and horserad-ish. The Delaware oysters werelarge, plump and had a salty, crisp flavor, while the FannyBay oysters were medium insize and had a sweet, citrus fla-vor. The very process of oystereating – the squeezing of thelemon, smattering of horserad-ish, Tabasco sauce and delicateslurping – instantly renderedme defenseless to a “vacation”state of mind. The last time Ienjoyed fresh oysters was inFlorida two years ago. So, thiswas quite a treat.

The Gulf shrimp are boiledwith Cajun and garlic spicesand served with lemons and aside of cocktail sauce. I couldhave stayed at that table peelingand eating shrimp into the weehours of the evening. They werecooked to perfection, easy topeel and the spices enhanced

the shrimp without overpower-ing them.

The clam chowder elicited asimilar response with its heavycreamy concoction of onions, potatoes, clams and subtle kickof spice at the end of each bite.

Exploring the culinary scenein Kane County can be quite anadventure, and it’s always par-ticularly enjoyable when youdiscover a place that deliversexactly what you crave, andwith the utmost precision. WithWildwood’s Thursday OysterBar, never again will I have todream of the palm-laced beachesof Florida in order to rememberwhat it is to dine on raw oystersand taste the delicate flavors ofthe sea.

TS20 SPORTSRicketts points to plan during Cougars visit

By KEVIN [email protected]

GENEVA – Cubs chairmanTom Ricketts loosened his col-lar and tie and watched mostof the Cougars July 28 matineeafter a morning speaking en-gagement at Fifth Third BankBallpark.

Will he be in position for arepeat when West Michiganmakes its next visit to Genevain 2016? Although he can’t becertain, Cougars owner BobFroehlich would like to thinkso.

With Ricketts deferring dis-cussion of the extension of theCubs’ soon-to-expire two-yearplayer development contractwith the Cougars to the club’sbaseball executives, Froeh-lich offered optimism about adeal as someone more familiarwith negotiations.

“It’s one of those thingswhere we’re pretty confidentit’s going to happen, and theysound like it’s going to hap-pen,” Froehlich said. “But I’mone of those old-school guys.Until I have that contract inmy hand, I’m not quite as con-fident. It would have been niceif he had announced it heretoday. That would have mademy day for that.”

Ricketts traveled to FifthThird Bank Ballpark for thefirst time armed with no suchgood news. However, he laud-ed his surroundings afteraddressing The ExecutivesClub of Chicago for nearly 45minutes as part of the organi-zation’s luncheon speakers se-ries, calling the Cougars’ home“a top-notch facility, particu-larly for [Class-A] ball.”

Froehlich serves on The Ex-ecutive Club’s board of direc-tors and introduced Rickettsas “my good friend and boss”during the program in theCougars’ super suite.

That aside, any announce-

ment of their working rela-tionship continuing beyondthe 2014 season will have towait. Ricketts called that thedomain of Cubs president ofbaseball operations Theo Ep-stein, president of scoutingand player development JasonMcLeod and general managerJed Hoyer.

“We’ve had a great experi-ence with Kane County. I likeDr. Bob a lot. We like the fa-cilities, we like the organiza-tion,” Ricketts said. “It’s reallynot my decision. I’ll leave thatup to Theo and Jason and Jed,what they want to do, but it’sbeen a good relationship.”

Ricketts addressed theCubs’ organizational plan ingreater depth during his talk, which included a slideshowthat began with this up-frontheadline: “Cubs Have Histori-cally Underperformed.”

Addressing a group with

varying degrees of baseballsavvy, he explained the orga-nization’s approach to playerdevelopment, free agency anda handful of other strategiesbent on delivering the Cubstheir first World Series titlesince 1908.

Per one slide, the Cubshad baseball’s 23rd-best farmsystem in 2011 – the final sea-son before Epstein took over– and zero consensus Top 50prospects. These days, the or-ganization rates through theroof. In its recent midseasonupdates, Baseball Americaand Baseball Prospectus bothlisted three Cubs prospectsamong their top 15, a distinc-tion shared by no other orga-nization.

While those plaudits offerpromise and excite the fansRicketts meets on the con-courses of Wrigley Field andFifth Third Bank Ballpark –

where he walked for parts ofthe game July 28 – they alsocome with a caveat.

“What does it mean to havethe best farm system in base-ball? The answer is absolutelynothing until you win at themajor league level,” Rickettstold the luncheon crowd. “Sowe don’t look at this as somekind of accomplishment thatwe think that there’s anythingto be related. This is not done. This is just showing that whatwe’re doing is building towardhaving a capability of havingsustained success at the majorleague level.”

Cougars manager MarkJohnson, who met with Rick-etts before the game, didn’tneed to eat a burger or slurpDiet Pepsi with him in the su-per suite to feel strongly aboutthe way the organization ismoving.

“He’s wonderful. Couldn’t

ask for a better owner or bossto work for,” Johnson said.“He gives us all the meansnecessary, and he wants to dothe right things. It’s just beena pleasure since he’s beenhere.”

The Ricketts family tookownership of the Cubs in 2009,and questions about endingthe club’s famed world cham-pionship drought immediatelyfollowed each member.

Tom Ricketts said his isthe rare occupation in whichstrangers tell him their age be-fore their name, often convey-ing their decades of loyalty tothe team.

A question-and-answer ses-sion at the end of his remarksinvited more of the same fromattendees and Cougars seasonticket holders. When askedwhether he might venture outon a limb and hazard a predic-tion of when the Cubs might fi-nally end their championshipfutility, Ricketts quipped: “Idon’t go out on limbs anymore.I mean, this whole thing is one, giant limb.”

Ricketts said 19 out of every20 Cubs fans he meets at Wrig-ley offers support for the club’sapproach of building throughthe minors while absorbinglumps at the big league level. The Cougars hope he’ll havethe chance to address thathopeful progression in Genevain years to come.

“Here’s how I would frameit: I think we know what webring to the table for the Cubs.I think they know they’re oneof the most iconic brands insports, so they know what theybring to the table,” Froehlichsaid. “So when both partiesknow what they bring to thetable and feel they have a win-ning hand, sometimes it just

plays out on its own.”
