‘Janet’s Stage’ opens local students to chambermusicBy NICOLE [email protected]
When a member of TheOrion Ensemble approachedSt. Charles East High Schoolorchestra director Ben Oswaltabout having his students par-ticipate in a pilot music pro-gram, he said he couldn’t turndown the opportunity.
Oswalt’s sophomore, ju-nior and senior music stu-dents have been participatingin the pilot program dubbed“Janet’s Stage” since the be-ginning of the school year.Through the program, mem-bers of The Orion Ensemble –what clarinetist and ensembleexecutive director KathrynPirtle said is one of the topchamber music groups in thecountry – works with highschool students at St. CharlesEast, Batavia High School andGeneva High School.
Although still in its earlyphases, Oswalt said Janet’sStage so far has been well re-ceived.
“I think any local directorwill tell you that when youhave opportunities to collab-orate with a very high-levelmusical group or any profes-sional group, that can alwaysbe a real plus for students,”Oswalt said. “[The Orion En-semble] obviously wants toshare their love of chambermusic.”
Pirtle said members of TheOrion Ensemble, which – inaddition to Pirtle – is madeup of violinist FlorentinaRamniceanu, pianist DianaSchmück and cellist JudySton, decided to create Janet’sStage because they felt cham-ber music wasn’t very acces-sible to younger musiciansin the Fox Valley area. Thecollaboration is named afterformer ensemble board chairJanet Safanda, who died last
year.“We have started to extend
our reach to young peoplein a really big way by devel-oping this educational out-reach program,” Pirtle saidof the yearlong initiative. “ ...The Fox Valley area is a bitunder-served for chambermusic, so we are there in acapacity that nobody else isproviding.”
Oswalt said he felt Pirtle’sobservation about the lackof accessibility to chambermusic in the Fox Valley areawas spot on. He said studentshave some opportunities toexperience that type of music, but they aren’t as prevalent asthey once were.
“If you ask my kids, ‘do you
listen to chamber music out-side of class?’ Most are goingto say no,” he said. “This hasbeen a jump-start to reinitiatekids into that, and I think thebest way to learn is to do it insmall groups. ... To have a pro-fessional step out and say it’simportant, it’s going to makea difference in a young musi-cian’s life.”
Pirtle explained that cham-ber music consists of a smallgroup of musicians who gener-ally play without a conductor. She said students who studychamber music learn the skillof working together as a groupwithout someone telling themevery note they’re playing.Chamber music students alsodevelop skills that are forma-
tive in artistic development,in general, she added.
“Chamber music is won-derful because you’re respon-sible for your own part andyou have to learn your ownpart really well,” she said.
In addition to working withstudents about once a month, the group also offers free tick-ets for students to any of TheOrion Ensemble’s shows. Theyear may culminate with jointconcerts between studentsand The Orion Ensemble thisspring, but that’s still tenta-tive.
She said The Orion En-semble plays varying stylesof music, including jazz, con-temporary, ballet, pieces withnarration and even funk.
“There’s just as much vari-ety in chamber music as thereis in any other kind of music,”she said. “You can cross allboundaries of style.”
At Geneva High School, orchestra director Julie Law-rence said all of her studentsare involved in chamber mu-sic, whether it’s a quintet or aquartet. After seeing The Ori-on Ensemble in concert, Law-rence said she was amazedwith the quality of the group’smusic.
“My kids don’t even real-ize what they’re working withhere and what these womenhave done,” she said. “Theyare superb performers. This isa big deal.”
Janet’s Stage works withschools free of charge thanksto the $22,000 donated towardthe initiative, Pirtle said. Shesaid she hopes to raise enoughmoney by the end of this yearto continue the program nextyear.
“We’re hoping the commu-nity will reach out and sup-port this,” she said. “The com-munity has embraced us, butwe would love for more peo-ple in the community to hearwhat we’re doing and to knowthe difference we’re makingin the tapestry of the Fox Val-ley, and that we’re giving stu-dents a unique experience.”

While the corneal surface regenerateslike skin, sometimes too many cells areshed, providing an opportunity for bac-teria and other microorganisms to enterthe eye. Anything that causes friction onthe surface of the eye, from blinking towearing contact lenses, can cause mildabrasions on the corneal surface called“corneal staining,” which is what is visiblewhen fluorescein dye and a black light areused to examine the cornea. While cornealstaining happens to everyone from time totime, those who wear soft contacts maybe particularly susceptible if they do notregularly clean and replace their lenses.Perhaps the most common is 3/9 staining(corneal staining in the peripheral corneaat the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions).P.S. Artificial tears are often used to clearup corneal staining caused by dry eyesyndrome.

“This is my first Shop witha Cop, and I’ve got to say thisis very generous of them,” hesaid.
Members of the Metropoli-tan Alliance of Police Chapter27 – the St. Charles Police De-partment’s union – partneredwith Super Target to shop fortoys with six children whosefamilies are being assisted byLazarus House in St. Charles.Seventeen police officersshowed up Dec. 14 to go shop-ping, and only three childrenwere able to make it. DetectiveJerry Schomer, union presi-dent, said an illness and pos-sibly the weather kept a fewfamilies at home, but officersstill planned to give them giftcertificates and a stockingfilled with gifts.
Schomer said the uniondonated $500 toward the shop-ping spree while Target do-nated $200 and offered to givea 20 percent discount on allitems purchased. Officer Brid-get McCowan, who helpedorganize the department’sfirst Shop with a Cop, saidshe hoped make it an annualevent that grows each year.
She said Super Target wasespecially generous in helpingcoordinate the event becauseit was put together somewhat
at the last minute. Store man-ager Evan Lenchner said inaddition to the discount and$200, the store also donatedwrapping paper and food fromthe store’s cafe. Target volun-teers also were on hand to as-sist with shopping.
“We want this to happenevery year,” he said. “Nextyear, we hope to give $500 to$1,000.”
St. Charles Police ChiefJim Lamkin said he had donea Shop with a Cop event whileworking in Elgin and wantedto bring it St. Charles.
“This is probably one of thenicest things these guys cando. I’m really proud of them,”he said. “I did this when I wasyounger and never forgot it.”
The three children whowere able to make it to SuperTarget on Dec. 14 picked upa variety of gifts – includingsome to give to their familymembers. Hannah Gagne-pain, 11, picked up a presentfor her mom, along with a newbasketball, a Nintendo DSgame and a popcorn maker.
Johnathan Mosley, 11, gotthe top gift on his list – a newXbox gaming system.
McCowan said she con-tacted Super Target about amonth ago and wasn’t surewhat to expect for the firstevent.
“For their employees tocome out and pull this off wasmore than I expected. [The of-ficers’] support of this is price-less,” she said. “Next year,we’re going to be doing fund-raising for this and workingto find avenues to fundraiseso we can help more childrennext year.”

ST. CHARLES – On Friday,Dec. 20, St. Charles police of-ficers will begin a traffic en-forcement campaign that fo-cuses on impaired drivers andseat belt violators, according
to a St. Charles Police Depart-ment news release.
The campaign, which isconducted in conjunctionwith the Illinois Departmentof Transportation’s Click It orTicket and Drive Sober or GetPulled Over programs, willlast through Sunday, Jan. 5.
Goals include reducing thenumber of severe injury andfatal traffic crashes; increas-ing the use of seat belts, childsafety seats and booster seats, while lowering the incidentsof impaired driving involvinginjuries and fatalities.
According to the U.S. De-
partment of Transportation’sNational Highway TrafficSafety Administration, seatbelt use is the single most ef-fective way to protect peopleand reduce fatalities in motorvehicle crashes.
Research has shown thatwhen lap and shoulder belts
are used properly, the riskof fatal injury to front seatpassenger car occupants isreduced by 45 percent, andthe risk of moderate to seri-ous injury is reduced by 50percent.

In a cost-cutting consol-idation move, 37 of the TCFBank branches located inChicago-area and NorthwestIndiana Jewel-Osco storeswill be closed by the end ofMarch, TCF National Bankannounced Dec. 11.
The consolidation willaffect five Kane County loca-tions: 119 Randall Road, Bata-via; 652 Kirk Road, St. Charles;465 N. Route 47, Sugar Grove;800 N. Main St., Elburn; and375 Randall Road, South Elgin.
TCF Bank spokesmanMark Goldman said there wasno “average” number of em-ployees per branch bank, butthat the consolidation willaffect approximately 200 em-ployees.
“It is our focus and intentto retain as many as possible
at TCF,” Goldman said. “Weare working with them andencouraging them to apply forother positions.”
TCF is based in Wayzata,Minn., and is closing its down-town Minneapolis branch aswell, the company announcedin a statement. TCF has part-nered with Jewel-Osco storesfor the past 16 years, officialssaid.
TCF will remain the prima-ry banking partner for Jewel,as it will be keeping 118 of itsbranch locations, Goldmansaid. In all, the bank current-ly has 199 branch locations inIllinois and Indiana.
“We have one of the largestbank footprints of any bank inthe Chicago area,” Goldmansaid.
The decision to consolidatethe branches was based on acomprehensive review of theTCF branch network to see
where branches could be con-solidated and resources couldbe deployed in other productsand services, Goldman said.
TCF added 52 ATMs at busplatforms in Chicago, he said.
“Another factor is the na-ture of how our customersbank is evolving,” Goldmansaid. “As more have the capa-bility to do online and mobilebanking through smartphonebanking, the amount of foottraffic has decreased.”
TCF now offers mobile andAndroid applications for cus-tomers to use, so they see lessneed to go into a branch to dobanking, he said.
A spokeswoman for Jew-el did not return a voicemailmessage or an email request-ing comment on the closuresand whether the grocerycompany plans to have an-other bank step in after TCFleaves.

Batavia native uses childhood as inspiration for bookBy NICOLE [email protected]
BATAVIA – Film and televisionscreenwriter Kevin Jakubowski saidhis new novel, “8-Bit Christmas,” is “alove letter to Batavia in many ways.”
Jakubowski’s hometown of Bataviaserves as the backdrop of his first book, which he describes as acomedic look at “kid popculture” in the 1980s.
T h e s t o r y f o l l o w s9-year-old Jake Doylewho desperately wishesto get a new Nintendo En-tertainment System forChristmas.
Only one kid in Bata-via – the rich kid – has aNintendo system and won’t let anyoneelse play it.
A “comedically tragic” accident in-volving a Nintendo system causes anuproar in Batavia, and parents are seton banning the gaming system from thecity. So Doyle and his buddies set outto try to get their hands on a Nintendosystem despite the obstacles.
“It’s sort of in the vein of the TVshow ‘The Wonder Years,’ or the mov-ies ‘A Christmas Story,’ ‘The Sandlot’and ‘Stand By Me,’ – movies that arenarrated by an older narrator lookingback on his childhood,” he said. “It’sdefinitely inspired by my own child-hood growing up in Batavia.”
Jakubowski said he consideredchanging the name of the town and set-ting the novel somewhere in the Chica-go area, but decided against it.
“There was really no reason to,” hesaid. “I definitely poke fun at the town, but I feel like it’s my town. I feel likeI’m almost poking fun at myself. ... It’sall lighthearted fun.”
Jakubowski is now working as afilm and television screenwriter andlives in Santa Monica, Calif. He saidthis year, he has done most of his writ-ing for Comedy Central’s “Brickleber-ry,” which is produced by comedianDaniel Tosh.
Jakubowski said he is also writingfor shows on Nickelodeon that are nowin the pilot stage.
He also co-wrote the comedy film“Assassination of a High School Pres-ident,” starring Bruce Willis and Mis-cha Barton.
Jakubowski said he wanted to write“8-Bit Christmas” as a book, but hopesto turn it into a film.
“It was really fun for me to kindof flex a different creative muscle,”he said. “It was fun to find my voicein something that didn’t have to be asstructured as a screen play.”
He said his own experiences grow-ing up in the 1980s also inspired thenovel, which hit shelves on Nov. 1.
Kids went to great lengths to gettheir hands on a Nintendo Entertain-ment System because “before then, there wasn’t anything as cool as that,”he said.
He noted one of his friends, who hadnever had a Nintendo EntertainmentSystem as a child, purchased one whenhe turned 18 – long after more moderngaming consoles had been out.
“That’s the length people went to,”Jakubowski said. “People have such areverence for Nintendo. It seemed tostrike a chord.”

Less than three years aftergraduating from BolingbrookHigh School in 1983, LennySchmidt was appearing at thehighly respected The ComedyStore in Hollywood, Calif.
Along with doing stand-upcomedy, Schmidt has appearedin such movies as “Joe Dirt”and “The Ugly Truth” and intelevision shows like “Bones,”“True Blood” and “Big Love.”
Schmidt, who now lives inLos Angeles, will be back inthe area when he appears atZanies at Pheasant Run Resort,4051 E. Main St., St. Charles, through Saturday, Dec. 28.More information is availableby visiting www.stcharles.zanies.com.
Kane County Chroniclereporter Eric Schelkopf hadthe chance to talk to Schmidtabout the upcoming show.
Eric Schelkopf: It seems likethe Zanies club in St. Charles is aregular spot for you.
Lenny Schmidt:Yeah, I’vebeen playing it for years. Itaped my third CD there, ac-tually. It’s a great room. I love
that room, actually.
ES:What do you like about it?LS: I’m from the area, so I
get a ton of people that comeup from Bolingbrook to see theshows.
And for a big room, youdon’t lose the crowds. It feelslike a small room.
I tend to go in the audiencea lot and whip up the crowd, and it’s easier to do with anintimate crowd because theyare all into it and listening.
I’m still just a blue collarguy from the Chicago area. Nota whole lot has changed forme, personality-wise.
So, basically it’s just aroomful of people like me. Itfeels like I am at home.
ES:What should people expectfrom the show?
LS:My whole act alwaysrevolves around real life andreal-life situations, and whatI’m going through. And whatI talk about now is being asingle dad, and that my kidsare 2,000 miles away. I go backhome to see them as much as Ican. And that’s my life now.
ES: It seems like that would bematerial that a lot of people couldrelate to.
LS:Yeah, I think so. I gotdivorced a couple of yearsago, and then you realize howmany friends you have thatare divorced or getting a di-vorce. I’ve always followed thestages of my life. I talked about
dating when I was single, andbeing married when I wasmarried. A lot of times, it’snot the life you want, it’s thelife you live. You find a way toadjust to the curves that you’rethrown in life, and go on.
And that’s kind of what Italk about on stage.
ES: You graduated fromBolingbrook High School in 1983,and less than three years later, youwere performing at The Com-edy Store in Hollywood. That’spretty impressive.
LS: Yeah, I moved to L.A.almost right out of high school.
ES: Did youmove to L.A. justbecause you thought it would bebetter for your career?
LS:Yeah, that’s exactly whyI moved here.
ES: How do you think thetwo scenes compare, L.A. andChicago?
LS: Well, there’s a lot morework in L.A., as far as actinggoes. There’s probably morework club-wise or stand-up-wise in Chicago, but there’salso way more opportunityand exposure out here in L.A.
All the shows are being
pitched out here; all the bigshows are auditioning outhere; everything starts outhere. Chicago is way better fordevelopment and for live per-formance than Los Angeles.
ES:Who are some of yourcomedy influences?
LS: My two biggest influenc-es are Richard Pryor and SamKinison, because they got meinto it. But two of the guys Iwatch now and really appre-ciate are Bill Burr and LouisC.K. They are two brilliantcomics. They talk about notjust the good stuff in life.
That’s the thing that I thinkI learned from Pryor morethan anything. Any guy thatcan bring pain on stage in lifeand make it funny, that’s huge.
ES:What kind of advicewouldyou give someone trying to breakinto comedy or acting?
LS: If you are going to be astand-up comedian, the bestthing to do is just get on stageand start doing it. It takes youa while to figure out what youwant to say, and how you aregoing to say it. As far as actinggoes, you have to study. Youhave to take an acting class.

SPORTS&RECSenior-led group seeks success on lanes
By KEVIN [email protected]
ST. CHARLES – Crashingpins, clanging ball returnsand flashy arcade sound ef-fects all conspire to makenoise an essential bowlingbackdrop.
At some houses, even ex-travagant carpeting seemsto scream during the walkfrom the shoe rental stationto the assigned lane.
St. Charles North boysbowlers don’t doubt thingscan get loud at St. CharlesBowl or elsewhere, but theyalso aren’t ones to raise theirvoices through the din. Se-nior leadership, as definedby Isaac Marshall, happenssubtly. Players-only meet-ings near the snack bar neednot apply.
“To me, it’s just about get-ting the whole team togeth-er and making sure nobodyis being upset, trying to getthem excited to be here,”Marshall said. “Maybe giv-ing some advice on theirshot and making sure thatthey’re listening and justfollowing directions fromcoach.”
In the handful of yearssince North, St. Charles Eastand Geneva made like theirbrethren to the bowling-lov-ing west and added the sportto the extracurricular state, the North Stars boys haveearned their share of accom-plishments.
Marshall rolled a perfect300 game at Rockford’s DonMarshall Lanes at a tourna-ment in January. In 2011-12,the North Stars advanced tothe second day of the 24-teamstate tournament behind asenior-heavy group.
After stumbling duringthe state series last seasonas a young team trying tofind its way, North entersthe winter with a quiet con-fidence. Marshall and four-year teammate Bailey Sebas-
tian are the elder statesmenof a core group that includesZac Cook, Nate Ioriatti ,Alex Kummet, Steven Leit-ner, Alex Mundt and NateSlinker.
Like most teenagers, theNorth Stars veer off taskfrom time to time, but don’tusually stray for long. Mar-shall and Ioriatti, Marshall’sa s s i s t a n t c a p t a i n , n e e donly point to a season-open-ing sweep of Bartlett to getNorth revved up again.
“A lot of the guys on the
team, pretty much every-body knows what they’redoing for the most part,”said Ioriatti, a junior. “Sothe main goal is to just makesure that everybody’s fo-cused and in the zone andwe’re bowling as best aswe can, because everybodyhere’s got the potential tobowl 280.”
Short of tacking a floures-cent-colored ad to the St.Charles Bowl bulletin board, coach Jeff Fett still wouldn’tmind a bigger rah-rah guy
on his side. Fett said it’s “re-ally obvious” among bowlerinteractions when thingsare going well, but added theNorth Stars “tend to shutdown a little bit” during ad-versity.
Maybe that’s by design.“It’s not like we’ve got
one standout guy and thenfour that are holding thatone guy back,” Ioriatti said.“Everybody’s at the samelevel, so that keeps a real-ly nice, even team aspect tothis sport that’s usually gen-
erally judged pretty individ-ually.”
The IHSA added a region-al component to the stateseries this season, decreas-ing the number of section-als statewide but increasingfrom two to six the numberof teams who advance fromthem.
More wiggle room figuresto bode well for bowlers witha tendency to grow tight. AsFett hopes the North Starswill learn, there’s no harmin opening up a bit.
