Isthereawaytotellthediversityofthestorieslivedbyacountryexperiencingprofoundandradicalchangesthroughtheso-called"simple"and"transparent"mediumofphotography?Thisexhibi8onproposestohighlightasingularandliPle-knowninEuropeexperienceofanoutstandingar8s8cphenomenonwithintheformerUSSR:theKharkivSchoolofPhotography.Fromthe1980sun8ltherevolu8onaryeventsofEuromaidanin2013-2014,thear8stsassociatedwiththismovementunveil,withthehelpofeminentlysubjec8veandexperimentalphotography,poli8caleventsda8ngbacktoSovietUkraineaswellascontemporaryones.Inthemid-70s,inacitythatwasthenoneofthegreatindustrialandacademiccentersoftheSovietUnion,inthisfamousKharkivian greyness, already related by Anton Chekhov in A Boring Story (1889), a group of young and ambi8ousphotographersdecidestotreatthephotographicmediuminanunconven8onalway.Despitetheconstantcensorshipoftherepressive state, this group will formulate a series of principles that will be imposed on the next two genera8ons ofphotographersfromtheKharkivSchool:thecommitmenttothecauseofphotographycapabletotransmitpowerfullytheirinnertruthandgivesubstancetotheirfundamentaldoubts,disturbing,elusiveandpolysemicphotography.Someofthesephotographers,developingaclearlypersonalaesthe8cs, reinventtherealitybydefyingthesocial taboosofrepresenta8on.ViktorKochetovemploys the "carnavaliza8on"ofeveryday life.Referring to thepopularSoviet imageryof"luriki", hemanually colors photographs capturing "non-decisive"moments, invisible in a culture centeredon a discoursepraising "heroes". The members of the Shilo group (with Vladyslav Krasnoshchok among them) make ingenious use ofphotographicmaterialthatcombinesques8oningtheSovietheritagewiththetreatmentofactualsubjectsrela8ngtotheirownexperiences.The body as a sensi8ve boundary between the outer and the in8mate worlds, as a receptacle for hidden desires, is aninstrumentusingwhichmanyphotographersoftheKharkivSchoolobserverealityandadapttoit.Facingthepainfulexperienceofasuddenlossofguidinglandmarksatthe8meofthebreakupoftheUSSR,SergiySolonskystages a disturbing spectacle of the fragmenta8on of a body. Roman Pyatkovka’s ero8c scenes hidden in the interiors ofKharkiviankommunalka, refer toa thirst forescape recallingone that suggestedby IlyaKabakov inhis installa8onAManWhoFlewintoSpacefromHisApartment(1982-1984).Thedreamsoffugue,ontheonehand,andthesummaryofwhattheseangofaSovietapartmentis,ontheotherhand,replacethesevainyetjovialaPemptsto"leapoutoftheSovietUnion"fromthein8matecontexttotherealmofsharedsocialexperience.IntheKharkivSchoolofPhotography,eachstoryrequiresanappropriateform.Thear8ststelltheirpersonalstoriesthroughawillinglyiconoclas8c,obenvisuallyexuberantphotographyandalwaysfullofplayful,insolentandsubversivespirit.

Viktor&SergiyKochetovViktor Kochetov (1947, Kharkiv, Ukraine) has unfinished musical and engineering educa8on. He became engaged inphotographyin1968.Forover40yearshehasbeenworkingasaprofessionalphotographerinfilmandphotolaboratories,namely, in the House of Amateur Ar8sts in Kharkiv, as well as for the Southern Railway and various newspapers. AsignificantpartofhisbodyofworkwascreatedtogetherwiththesonSergiyKochetov(1972,Kharkiv,Ukraine).SergiyhasassistedViktorsincehewasateenager.Similartohisfather,heabandonedhisstudiesintheKharkivtechnicaluniversity,pursuingacareerinphotojournalisminstead.

The Kochetov’s art is based on coopera8on andmutual exchange of ideas. Their approach was shaped in the dialec8cconfronta8onwiththeauthors’photojournalistbackground:ontheonehand,it’sthe"crab"ofmakingimagesthatwouldcatchtheeyeofnewsagenciesinthehighlycompe88veatmosphere;ontheotherhand,it’sadesiretogetawayfromthefaked images ofwelfare and censorship of official reportages. Viktor and Sergiy Kochetov have shibed the focus to thescenesofbold,nonstagedrealityofthelateSoviet-Post-Soviet8mes.Theauthorsarewell-knownfortheextensiveusageofthemethodofhand-colouringofblackandwhiteprints,whichisrootedinthetradi8onof"luriki"—enlarged,retouchedandoben8ntedphotographicportraits.Itwasacommonprac8cethatevolvedintotheembodimentofkitschandimageofanaveragesovietperson.ViktorandSergiyKochetovexperienceddifferentmodali8esofthemethod,varyingintensityofcolouringandformats.AlargenumberofprintsaresingleordoublepanoramasfeaturingsceneriesofKharkiv,itsoutskirtsandotherloca8onstowhichthephotographersweresentonassignments.The"fauvis8c"coloursoftheirworksdon’tveilbutintensifytheplainnessofthereality,atthesame8merevealingthelyricalsideofmundanesubjects.

GrokiyKharkivStateUniversity,butabandonedthestudiesaberthethirdyear.HeaPendedthoseyearsalocalcinemaclubandgraduallygotinterestedinphotography.Hebecameanac8vepar8cipantofexhibi8onssincethelate1980s,drawingthepublic's aPen8on with his collages (BesSary series). Sergiy Solonsky’s composi8ons develop the principle of "modulecollage",whichisbasedoncrea8nganimagebyrepea8ngoneandthesameelement(PhallicHeraldryseries).Despitehisloveforstraightphotography,itrarelyappearsinSergiySolonsky’soeuvreofthe1990s,mainlyinsomeseparateshotsandtwodocumentaryseries(Let’shaveadrinkandMoonshiners).

RomanPyatkovka(1955,Kharkiv,Ukraine)In 1972-1977 Roman Pyatkovka studied in Kharkiv Polytechnic Ins8tute. In 1978-1981 he aPended the courses ofIns8tute of Theatrical Art. For five years (1979–1984) he has beenworking as a Chief ligh8ng designer of the YoungSpectator’s Theater in Kharkiv. That background defined certain theatricality of his future ar8s8c prac8ce. He gotinterestedinphotographyintheearly1980s.Inthisperiodhewasverymuchinfluencedbysuchphotographersoftheoldergenera8onoftheKarkhivSchoolofPhotographyasBorisMikhaïlovandOlegMaliovany.

VladyslavKrasnoshchok(1980,Kharkiv,Ukraine)VladyslavKrasnoshchokstudied inKharkivMedicalUniversity in1997-2002.Hehasbeenac8velyprac8cingphotographysince2008.Hewasapar8cipantoftheShilogroupsince2010(togetherwithSergiyLebedynskyy,VadymTrykozandOleksiySobolev).Thear8sthasarecognisablestyleofmonochromedocumentaryshots:theyareaesthe8callytransformedusingdifferenttechnicalmanipula8ons.Thosemanipula8onsresultintheanachronis8ceffectofvaguegrainedsurfaceandforma"screen"thatamplifiestheexperienceofcontemporaneity.Theauthorisinterestedinshowingtheharshnessofdailylife,choosingtheinsider’sposi8on,asintheBolnichkaseriesofshotstakenatKharkivstateclinicalhospitalofemergencyaid,whereVladyslavworked for 10 years. In his projects, Vladyslav Krasnoshchok also uses hand-colouring, including8n8nganonymous archives of vintage photographs found on Kharkiv flea market.
