PART 1WHAT ARE STORM WINDOWS?

When windows start to fail, most people start automatically thinking about getting replacements. They aren’t necessarily wrong because failing windows do have to be replaced eventually but replacements are not the only solution to the problem, most especially when your windows are not beyond being remedied. The other

solution? Storm windows.

WHAT ARE THEY? Think of them as windows over windows. Storm windows are window units mounted on the exterior or interior side of primary windows. However, they can’t replace windows. Instead, storm windows complement normal windows, helping not just to boost protection against harsh weather but improve insulation as well. If a primary window swings outward, like in the case of casement and awning windows, then Interior storm windows are installed. Otherwise, the exterior option is taken advantaged of.

INTERIOR VS. EXTERIOR STORM WINDOWSInterior storm windows only have one-track designs while exterior ones come in two- or three-track options. As interior storm windows are located on the inner side of a primary window, they are designed to insulate more versus offering added weather protection.

A two-track exterior storm window is usually fitted with glass for one track and a screen for the other, commonly used for double hung windows. As the storm window is designed similar to a double hung, it also operates like one, allowing air to be let in when the weather permits. A three-track exterior storm window, on the other hand, has sashes that can be moved independently of each other. Each windowpane and half-screen are placed in separate tracks so they can be moved in whatever configuration desired to meet ventilation needs.

INTERIOR OR EXTERIOR?As we previously talked about, there are two kinds of storm windows: one is installed internally and the other on the outside. To decide between the two, consider the kind of visual impact they will provide your home. Do you want your primary windows to be in full view or are you fine with letting them be obscured a bit? If you have beautiful windows and feel it would be a shame to cover them up, then interior storm windows might be more up your alley.

WHAT FRAME MATERIAL SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?Some of the most popular material options for storm windows include aluminum, vinyl and wood. Aluminum frames are easy to maintain and very durable while vinyl is more affordable but less sturdy. Wood, on the other hand, offers the most visual appeal but requires high maintenance.

GLASS OR PLASTIC PANELS?Glass panes provide better visibility and last longer, but they can be fragile and heavy. Opting for tempered glass, however, may take care of the fragility issue. Plastic panes, on the other hand, are easier to install but can be more prone to getting damaged. There are tougher plastic panels that are lighter and more durable than glass like acrylic thermoplastic, but these can be easily scratched. Some plastic panels also have a tendency to turn yellow over a period of time.

Take into consideration these points based on which ones will address your needs the most. Don’t hesitate to talk to your local contractor if you have questions or concerns! Getting storm windows may be cheaper than replacing your primary windows but it is still an investment so it’s important to find the right ones for you and your home.
