Join us for a memorable evening watching the incredible displays and antics of this shorebird that gave up the shore. The male woodcock displays for nearby females by flying from his calling grounds in an upward spiral and then fluttering like a leaf back to earth while making a very distinctive "whirring"call. Upon landing, the bird begins a series of "peenting" calls in hopes of attracting that special female. Birchwold Farm in Wrentham is an ideal spot to view this magnificent show.

Birding is one of the fastest growing pastimes in the U.S. Birds are spectacularly beautiful and very interesting subjects to study. Our objectives will be to learn the skills to identify the birds on sight, to recognize the association between birds and their preferred habitat, to

hone our skills of observation and finally to learn to recognize birds by their calls and songs. No experience necessary. Each class will start with a 30 – 40 minute birding session outside in various habitats. A portion of the final class will focus on optics, guidebooks, and some reliable birding destinations.

One of the most spectacular habitats that Mass Audubon protects in central MA is a property called High Ledges. This beautiful 616 acre site provides spectacular views of the Deerfield River valley and Mount Graylock. In addition to the scenery, there are ample opportunities to view a great variety of unusual and beautiful ferns, orchids, and other wild flowers including painted trillium, and jack in the pulpit. This area is also home to a great variety of interior forest birds such as black-throated green warblers and scarlet tanagers, as well as chestnut sided warblers and indigo buntings that tend to be associated with more open habitats.

Explore the fascinating world of Stony Brook after dark. You never know what you will find on a walk around the trails after sunset. We’ll start this program with an illustrated discussion of the many creatures that roam the wetlands, fields and forest after dark. We’ll practice our owl hoots and take a look at what makes these critters so special, then head out on the trail to look and listen. We might hear, or even see, great horned, eastern screech owls, beavers or other nocturnal animals. After our walk we’ll warm up with some hot chocolate.

There is no more exciting time to get out onto the sanctuary than around sunset and just after. The fading light signals many of the animals that it is time to get out and start their daily activities. Creatures such bats, moths, beavers, foxes, raccoons and beavers will become active, foraging and moving about. Bring your flashlight and we’ll cover the lens in red to preserve our night vision before we head outside. This program will be held rain or shine, so please dress for the weather.

If you really want to find out what is living in the pond, you need to look under the water. Join us as we collect samples from below the surface, carefully picking through leaves and muck for the masters of the underwater world. How do these creatures live under the water? Among the creatures we may discover living below and on the surface are dragonflies, side-swimmers, clams, predaceous diving beetles, water scorpions and much more. Of course we will also get our fingers dirty during the process! Minimum age: 6
