THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF BOOKS!

The Stoneybrook Book Club's next meeting will be on Friday, September 6th at

1:30 PM at the Rec Center.The book chosen to discuss is "Olive Kitteridge", a

Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Elizabeth Strout. The book is set in Crosby, Maine,

which may seem like nowhere, but seen through this brilliant writer’s eyes, it’s in

essence the whole world, and the lives that are lived there are filled with all of the

grand human drama—desire, despair, jealousy, hope, and love. The novel is also

the basis for a miniseries on HBO. Seats are still open and all are welcome. Should

GIRLS NIGHT OUT

November 8th will be the Stoneybrook Annual Thanksgiving Dinner starting 5:30pm at the Rec Center. This year tickets will be sold for this event. Cost is

five dollars per person to cover this huge meal.

Ticket sales will start September 16th. Sondra

in the office will have them available.

Please pay by check only, sorry no cash, made out to: Stoneybrook HOA. They will also be sold at October’s “share a dish” on October 10th.Ticket sales will end November 1st. No tickets will be sold at the door. This is to facilitate ordering the turkey. There will be a sign-up sheet at the Rec center for bringing vegetables, potatoes, etc. Due to code restrictions we are only allowed 100 people, so please get your tickets early. The extreme climatic conditions in our area have broken many long standing records. They

range between drought and high temperature that date back to April 1895. Now we are having

an abundance of rain and high temperatures. Each in itself is not a problem but when combined

under specific conditions they can create havoc on our wetland communities and lakes. This is

what happened during the first two weeks of August resulting in fish die offs in several lakes and

ponds within Heritage Harbour.

Fish kills are often the first visible signs of environmental stress. Many fish species have a

relatively low tolerance of variations in environmental conditions and their death is often an

indicator of problems in their environment. There have been several articles on this topic

dating back to August 2015, where I listed the various causes for fish die offs. They range from

natural changes in the environment to problems in the environment created by human

interference. In the recent die offs the conditions were from natural causes called “Ecological

hypoxia” (oxygen depletion). Hypoxia in this case was due to high water temperatures and

sudden heavy rain storms.

The increase in water temperature (thermal pollution) allows the dissolved oxygen (D.O.) to

be liberated. This is due to the fact that all the molecules are moving faster, and if the surface

area is increased by rain fall, more D.O. evaporates off the surface. But doesn’t rain increase

the D.O. in the water? Yes, however there is a delicate balance between both of these

factors. If the water level is higher and plant life along the banks is then under water it begins

to decay, increasing the amount of CO2 and other organic compounds into the water. This

will increase the amount of anaerobic bacteria that do not need O2. They end up producing

ethane and methane gases instead.

Another factor to consider is the barometric pressure. When it rains, the pressure in the air

decreases, because air pressure is related to the gases in the air, not the water it contains.

That is why the barometer drops when it rains and rises when there are less water molecules in

the air. With less pressure pushing down on the surface, the lighter molecules will escape, (ex.

H2O has an atomic mass of 18 AMU and an oxygen atom has an atomic mass of 8 AMU or 16

as a gas O2). By having less mass than water molecules, it can escape easier from the water,

especially if the water molecules are moving faster due to an increase in water temperature,

or wave action caused by rain and or wind or both.

As sad as it seems, the death of the fish provide a food supply for the scavengers of the

environment, the local vulture populations plus other animals. As the fish decompose, their

scent in the air attracts these animals to the site to feast on the remains, and to supply food for

themselves and their newly developing young. In this manner, the nutrients from the fish are

recycled back into the environment through other members of the food chain. Ultimately the

waste products given off from those who eat the fish remains will recycle nutrients into the soil

for plant growth.

STONEYBROOK HOA POOL RULES

Residents and their guests use the pool and spa at their own risk since there is no lifeguard on duty.

All children must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian at all times. Children under

12 years old are not allowed in the spa.

• NO pets are allowed in the pool area

• NO bikes, skate boards, etc. are allowed in the pool area

• NO food, beverages or alcohol are allowed in the pool or on the wet deck

• NO glass containers of any kind in the pool area

• NO smoking in the pool or on the wet deck

• NO diving, running, rough-housing or ball playing in the pool area

• NO persons with open cuts or skin infections may enter or remain in the pool/spa area

• NO incontinent persons in the pool/spa

• NO cut-off jeans or shorts used as substitute for swimwear

• NO surfboards or rafts (flotation devices as swimming aids are permitted)

• NO nudity

• Children that are not toilet trained must wear tight fitting rubber briefs

• Audio equipment only allowed with the use of headphones

• ID cards are required at all times and must be shown upon request by authorized

representatives of the association

• Any activities which unreasonably disturb the peaceful enjoyment of the pool area by other

persons are prohibited

• Each residence may have no more than six (6) guests at the pool/spa area at the same time

• The pool is closed during severe weather

Care of the pool/spa area

• Use of the deck furniture is on a first come first served basis. No reserving of this furniture is

permitted, and unattended items found on chairs will be removed and placed in the lost and

found located in the Rec Center activities room

• Deck furniture should be returned to their original positions after use and must not be

removed from the pool/spa area

• Deck furniture must remain at least 4 feet from the edge of the pool

• All persons should shower to remove lotions, sand, etc. before entering the water

• No substances such as soap or shampoo may be used in the pool/spa area

Violations of any of these rules may result in removal of the offending party from the pool

area for the remainder of the day.

ROVING PATROL IN OUR STONEYBROOK COMMUNITY

Since July of 2008 the Roving Patrol has been making rounds throughout Heritage Harbour in

Stoneybrook, Riverstrand and Lighthouse Cove 7 nights a week from 6 PM - 6 AM. Between the

Roving Patrol and Neighborhood Watch Committee our community will continue to be a safe

place to live. If at any time between the hours of 6 PM and 6 AM you feel the need to contact

the Roving Patrol Call Center to report any happenings, please call (941) 549-9637.

This service has been provided through the Heritage Harbour Master Association. Please keep in

mind that Heritage Harbour is a lot of ground to cover, but before you know it they will be traveling

up and down your street keeping an eye out for your safety.

PLEASE REMEMBER: All residents must have a valid I.D. card to use the facilities, including the pool, fitness room, volleyball, tennis and basketball courts. Children under 12 must have parental supervision while at the Recreation Center and the pool or they will be asked to leave.

I.D.s are made in the Rec Center office.

Ongoing Maintenance of Your Property

Here are a few reminders to make your tasks easier:

Roofs, homes, driveways including sidewalks abutting your property are your

responsibility to be power washed.

Grass and gardens need to be free of weeds, watered in accordance with the

watering restrictions and supplied with nutrients. Dead bushes must be

replaced with like kind vegetation and mulch replenished.

Palm trees must have the dead fronds removed and Oak trees must have

canopies raised to 8’ high. If they are over sidewalks or roadways they must

be raised to 14’ high.

All debris must be bundled so it can be removed easily in bundles no more

than 4’ long and not more than 50 pounds. Landscape debris is picked up by

Manatee County every Wednesday.

Trash pickup is on Monday and Thursday. Monday is recycling. Wednesday is

yard waste.

All garbage cans and recycling bins must be stored in closed garages.

During a holiday week the day of the pickup schedule moves forward by one

day.

For your convenience all garbage related questions can be answered by

Manatee County Utilities at: 941-792-8811.

We know you love your pets so please keep them on a leash at all times and

pick up after them.

TREE TRIMMING REMINDER: Oak and Palm Trees have to maintain their natural growth pattern. Canopies must be raised to 8’

if they hang over sidewalks. They must be raised to 14’ high if they hang over the roads. They may

not be cut to look unnatural— no lollipop top or hat racking.

Remove dead branches immediately.
