ATTENTION ALL ARTISTS: Every Wednesday from 9am to 12pm

residents get together in the rec center to

paint and create in all media. Time is

spent inspiring each other and chatting.

The group enjoys occasional outings

together to local scenic areas. They take

photos and try to recreate what they see

on canvas. Bring your own art supplies. Beginners and

everyone with an artistic flair are welcome. The Gallery Wall

in the rec center displays our community artists’ creations.

Call Laurie with any questions: 941-896-6277.

STONEYBROOK ART WALL

Stoneybrook arts. Laura has a BFA from the University of

Louisville and MFA from Columbia University in New York.

She was an art and Humanities teacher in public and

private schools for several years in NYC.

organic forms, especially flowers. Many of her paintings

were done in our Wednesday workshop. If you have not

seen her works please stop by the rec center. They are truly

“Share a Dish”, formally known as “Pot Luck”, has changed its name and changed its meeting time! Beginning Friday, October 11th, doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will begin at 6 PM. This was done in the hopes of making it a little easier for anyone working to have enough time to attend. Our first Share a Dish of the season has several surprises awaiting those in attendance. This month, local residents, Jeff and Sharon Carlson, who call themselves “Care Tunes”, will entertain us with music, trivia, and some jokes! They say it’s “music with an old country flavor”. Our 50/50 Raffle Tickets will be sold again this year. $1 per ticket, or 6 for $5. Tickets for this year’s Thanksgiving Share a Dish will also be on sale that evening. Tickets are $5 per person, checks only, made out to Stoneybrook HOA. In addition, there will be a door prize and other surprises! Please sign up at the Recreation Center in the notebook or on line at www.stoneybrookhoa.com (under Activities) after you have decided to bring an entrée, a side dish, or a dessert. We ask that you bring enough to serve 10-12. You’re welcome to BYOB if you want. Coffee, lemonade, and iced tea will be provided. Please join this month’s hosts: Sue and Randy Tucker, Linda and Joe Silagy, Diana and Al Padilla, and Karen and Marc Koch welcome back our friends and neighbors, both old and new, to our first Share a Dish of the season! Autumn is a wonderful time of year here in Stoneybrook, let’s celebrate it!

THE MAJESTIC SAND HILL CRANES By, Larry Eichert 5/16 The Sandhill cranes are understandably the most loved and most visible birds. They stand almost 4 feet tall and their bugling or rattling calls are beautiful, but haunting. They rule the roads and tell you in no

uncertain terms when you are in their way. (Once, a pair would not let me out of my garage.) Many are non-migratory year-round breeding residents. Those that are local are slightly smaller than a different species that migrate from the Great Lakes region. Both species nest during late winter and spring on mats of vegetation about two feet in diameter and in shallow water. In 2011 & 2012, there was a nest where the two parts of Stone Harbour Loop meet that was visible from the road. After the wetland restoration project was discontinued an over growth of opportunistic and invasive species plants forced them from their nesting area. They normally mate for life and forage for seeds and roots, insects, mole crickets, acorns, turf grubs, earthworms, snakes, frogs and occasionally young birds or small mammals. Cranes are attracted by the open setting (mowed grass, on golf courses and lawns). They normally lay two eggs and when hatched the young are capable of following their parents away from the nest 24 hours after hatching. The young weigh about twelve pounds, males are larger than females, but their external markings are identical. In the more mature birds the male has a grayer brown coloring than the brown of the female. Cranes live to be older than most birds, some reaching 20 years old.

People inadvertently put them in harm’s way when they attract these birds to their yards with feed. Some "feeding" is accidental such as when bird seed is spilled from feeders by other animals onto the ground below making a nice feeding station for cranes. But, some people deliberately feed Sandhill cranes. Feeding such bread, corn and other processed foods gives them rickets and glaucoma especially the young. We have had to catch them and have them removed from the wild. Most of them die. They do not need handouts from humans. In 2002, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission made it illegal to feed sandhill cranes.

(Florida Fish and Wildlife Code 68A-4.00(3)). Cranes fed by humans can become aggressive toward people. In several instances, children have been attacked by cranes. Cranes fed by humans also have been known to damage window screens and do other property damage. Sandhill cranes are cherished members of the Florida ecosystem and the Stoneybrook community. They need to feel safe and comfortable in their environment in order to survive and flourish. If they feel threatened they will leave and find a more conducive environment in which to live. It would be a shame to lose them. Parts are a paraphrase from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. All photos were taken inside Stoneybrook over the past ten years by Larry Eichert
