To this day, the month of September elicits thoughts of the excitement and
anticipation of a new school year. New classes, new teachers, new friends; a
fresh start. This September is no different here at Grand Haven. I have already meet a bunch of new
friends, there is always something new to learn and I’m ready for the challenges. And who can resist
cheering for your school and all the players on the team. I am very enthused by the spirit exhibited by
one and all.
While I am on the subject of school, check out what Rick has lined up for the Fall Semester of
SenseSational Golf. Whether you just take a class here and there or want to dedicate yourself to
improving your game, you’ll find something to fit your schedule. As it has been said “the more you learn,
the more there is to learn”.
September is also the month that we begin consideration of programs and fees for the upcoming year;
so keep your thoughts and ideas coming. The more members we can add, the more services and fun
we can provide. Thank you to everyone that have shared suggestions and names of potential new
members – go Grand Haven!
There are a lot of activities on the calendar as we move into Fall. Be sure to take some time and check
them all out. Or if you have an idea for something you would like to see at the club, please pass it along
to us.

This month I am super excited to announce several “NEW” things that you
as members will love. First of all my goal in the last newsletter was to
update our Web site and make it more user friendly. I am happy to
announce I have started this process and you will begin seeing changes as
early as September 8th. Also, another item I touched on was communication and making sure that
members know when and what is happening at the club. A bulletin board has been placed by the
Women’s restroom that will be updated throughout the month with News and Events. If you cannot find
the information you are looking for, please come see me.
The most important item that I am excited about is MEMBERSHIP APPRECIATION DAY! We are going to
take this day to thank you for being a part of Grand Haven Golf Club. This day will be filled with, Fun,
Food, Fellowship and Prizes! Mark your calendars now to attend this great event. Part of this event will
entail the start of a Membership Directory with photos. This directory will help each member feel a part
of our family as well as put names with faces. Each member will have the opportunity to have their
picture taken and receive a FREE 8x10 photo. No purchase is necessary to receive the free photo,
however portrait packages will be available for purchase. With holidays right around the corner it would
be a great gift to share with your family. Sign-ups are now open and can be completed online, through
the golf shop, or with me in my office. This Directory will not be complete without all of you! More
information will follow on both the Membership Appreciation Day and the Directory .

As I am writing this, we are less than one
week away from our last scheduled
aerification. If all goes according to plan
and Mother Nature cooperates, you
should see a quick recovery. We have
followed through on the cultural practices
discussed in the August newsletter.
Verticutting and topdressing has been
done on a bi-weekly basis. Many
members have noticed and commented
on the quality of ball roll and a slight
increase in speed. Bunkers are now
being raked on a regular schedule and evaluations of problematic bunkers is on going.
On August 11th, Andrea and I conducted our first “Course Walk” with the heads of the member
associations as well as a few randomly selected members. Although rainy conditions cut short our time
on the golf course, we were able to hold a lengthy “roundtable” discussion afterwards. During a heavy
downpour, we sought in the maintenance building. We made the best out of a less than ideal situation
by introducing the attendees to our equipment and the uses of. The questions and comments that
came from the “Course Walk”, equipment tour, and discussion in the clubhouse were great! I
thoroughly enjoy questions and comments from the membership. We have already implemented a few
of the suggestions, as well as put more on the schedule for the upcoming months. Andrea will schedule
future “Course Walks” so that other members can attend. Going forward I will take advantage of every
opportunity to educate the membership about golf course maintenance.
One comment/suggestion was to clarify the direction of cart traffic in relationship to greens (how close
is too close?). The standard answer is to keep
carts at least thirty yards from the green and
cart path only on par 3’s. When approaching
the green complex, many of you have seen a
green post near the cart paths. The posts are
intended to show where carts are to stop the
approach to the green and exit to the cart
path. However, it was brought to my attention
during our course ride, having the post near
the path makes it difficult to see. We have
started to move the green posts a few feet off
of the fairway, in the rough, to aid in visibility. The alternative is to start roping off areas, which is a
practice that I do not like. Our diversion of traffic will step up immensely both leading up to and during
the winter months in order to alleviate turf injury.
The maintenance crew here at Grand Haven is very appreciative of the positive feedback and the
smiles/waves from the membership. However, if an issue or a problem with the golf course arises,
please direct those towards me. Our maintenance crew works diligently toward maintaining great
course conditions. If there is an issue or a problem, I want to be the first to know as I have the ability to
address the concern and change it. If you do not see me on the golf course, I can always be reached by
e-mail, [email protected].
Thank you for the warm reception that I have received in my first few months!

Did you know that the 2014 Ryder Cup matches are being played at the Jack Nicklaus design at
Gleneagles Hotel Perthshire Scotland on the PGA Centenary Club? And did you know that the last time
the US won the Ryder Cup it was on the Jack Nicklaus design Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville
Kentucky? How’s that for being in good company!
Ryder Cup fever is heating up! September 2nd, Tom Watson is set to announce his three Captains
picks that will round out the 2014 US Team. “I’ve laid down the gauntlet for those who want to be on
the team. Play well and I’ll give you look. Don’t play well and I won’t.” The 40th Ryder Cup will be
contested Sept. 26-28th. Be sure to tune in and route for the home team!
The LPGA is also in Europe this month for The Evian Championship in Evian-les-Bain, France Sept. 11-
14th. With a purse of $3,250,000 and 625 points toward the CME Globe , this major is sure to be
exciting.
As for right here at Grand Haven, we have a fun Scramble and Cook out on tap for Labor Day and
another Nine and Dine on September 13th. I hope you can join us.
In the golf shop here at Grand Haven this month, we have two innovative products for the lingering dog
days of summer. First is the StaCooler Golf Glove by Foot Joy. This glove is specially designed for
maximum grip control in hot, humid conditions. Available for both Men and Women, The StaCooler
glove for Women combines a customized breathable fit with an unmistakable feel for fashion. The
StaCooler Glove retails for $16 before your member discount.
The second item I wanted to tell you about is the Soleeve UV Sun Sleeve. UPF rating of 50+ and blocks
98% UV-A and UV-B rays, this light weight breathable sun protection option is very comfortable to
wear. This product is the lightest weight sleeves I have tried plus they seems to have a cooling affect on
the skin. Available in White and Black with sizes from small to XL. The Soleeve retail at $19 for a pair
before your member discount.
Be sure to check out other featured savings and help us make room for new Fall products that will be
arriving soon!

The Men’s Golf Association is off to a strong and spirited start of our new 2014-15 golfing year. We
recently completed our latest successful major event with our “Boys of Summer Tournament”. Two
teams of 24 players each went head to head over a two-week period in a match play format of two man
teams. The Golden Gloves (which were captained by Bob Stansfield and Joe Palermo) outlasted the
Pinch Hitters (captained by Bob Malone and Steve Tosh). The 48 participants had a great time and
celebrated with a barbecue of burgers, brats and beer after the final round. The social event was
funded out of our annual membership fee of $40.
In addition to our weekly Wednesday 8:30AM shotgun-start events, our plans are to have three Major
Tournaments during the year. The next “Major”, a two-week Ryder Cup format event, will be our
“Holiday Tournament” and will take place on 12/3 and 12/10. After the final round we will have our
Christmas luncheon, again funded from our annual membership fee of $40. We have had two of these
major events over the last four months and the membership of approximately 100 has whole-heartedly
endorsed and enjoyed these events. Anyone who is a member of the MGA can participate.
We believe the MGA is a good place to meet new people and provides an opportunity to play with
different people than your normal weekly groups. The “seasoned veterans” have learned that their $40
annual membership is “well returned” with the 3 Major Tournaments and luncheons. If there are any
new or existing members who are interested in finding out more about the MGA, please contact Pete
Bianchi, our Membership Chairman ([email protected]) or contact the Pro Shop Desk for
membership information.
Please go to our website, ghmga.com for additional information about the MGA.

September 18th will be the Opening Day Tournament for our ladies league. The LGL is a great place to
meet new friends and enjoy an organized yet less competitive 9 hole round of golf. League play is every
Thursday at 8:30 am. New members are always welcome! Stop by the golf shop for more information.

September 9th marks the opening of the season for the Women’s Golf Association; the season lasts
until next May. Each Tuesday our members gather for an 8:30 Shot gun followed by lunch in the club-
house. Every Tuesday an event is scheduled, some are team events and some are individual, but all you
have to do is sign up and the pro shop will assign you to a foursome. Belonging to the association is
“two-fold”, not only are you able to play golf each Tuesday with new friends, but afterwards you are able
to lunch together and enjoy their company, the social aspect of our association is very important to all of
our members. There are also two inter-club groups which may interest you, if you like some enjoyable
competition. We have 82 members so far this year and we would welcome any ladies who would like to
join us, there are membership applications available for full and associate Grand Haven Golf members
at the desk in the pro shop.

Hello to All,
In the beginning of my last article I began with a very sincere Thank You to all of you for all
your support, words of encouragement and suggestions. I would like to say thank you again as we
continue trying to bring new events, different menus, and hopefully just some over all excitement to
the Food and Beverage operation here at Grand Haven. In August we featured some new things in
Food and Beverage to include our Two for Tuesdays which was a big hit that we will continue to have
on the first Tuesday of the month. Nine and Dine, the Champagne Brunch and Cheeseburgers in
Paradise also were a lot of fun! Also in the month of August the Member favorites such as Prime Rib
Night, Birthday Bash and Turkey Buffet had great turnouts and we received a lot of great feedback. We
will continue moving forward trying to bring to you new and fun membership events and providing
excellent food and service. In doing so I ask that you all remember that a lot of these events are new to
the staff and me and we are working very hard to bring new life to the Club.
So your patience is also very much appreciated. As we grow near to the
close of summer and some of our snow birds come home I am sure that we
will become even busier here at the Club! That being said as always we ask
that you please make reservations when dining with us here in the
restaurant. Whether it is for ala carte, a buffet or a special event this will
allow us to staff appropriately so we can always provide you and your guests
with excellent food and service.
See you at the Club,
John Kirby, CEC

Events….. Events….. and more Events
Heading into September usually brings to mind heading back to school. This
year, I want it to mean heading back to the Clubhouse! We want everyone to
come and experience some of the new events we have planned here at
Grand Haven for the month of September. Our Two for Tuesday Night was
such an amazing success in August that we want to bring it back every
month, so keep an eye out for that on our calendar.
Another event we are planning for September is a Red Sox vs.Yankees Night. Come watch these long
time rivals fight it out and enjoy some baseball cuisine at the same time…who doesn’t love hotdogs &
cracker jacks!! You could even win a new Red Sox or Yankee hat if your team brings in the most
people to the Clubhouse!
We will also be saying good-bye to summer with our Labor Day BB-Q picnic. Relax in the end of the
summer sun before it starts getting crazy with the upcoming holiday season. November and
December are not too far off! Believe me, the holiday season will be here before you know it! With
that in mind, if you haven’t heard from me already- Please give me a call or stop by to “Save the
Date” for all your holiday parties and get-togethers. December is booking up fast!!! We don’t want
you to miss out!
As always, keep your ideas coming! I love to hear from everyone!
