ReSuLtS | Sporting Kansas City currently sits in second place of the Eastern Conference with a record of 11-7-4 (37 points). The team had a historic start to 2012, garnering seven straight wins to begin the season. However, Kansas City experienced a slight decrease in their momentum losing three games in a row before earning a draw against Western Conference foe Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

The momentum was back in Kansas City’s favor as the team won two Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup games against Orlando City SC and Colorado Rapids and added two MLS victories against the San Jose Earthquakes and Toronto FC. Sporting KC then went on the road and earned a tie at CenturyLink Field against Western Conference foe Seattle Sounders.

Sporting KC experienced a second short slump in MLS play, suffering a 4-0defeat to the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park followed by a 1-0 loss to rivalChicago Fire at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. However, in between the twoMLS matches, Sporting Kansas City hosted the Dayton Dutch Lions in OpenCup competition, in which they earned a 3-0 victory to send them to theLamarHuntU.S.OpenCupsemi-finals.

Sporting Kansas City got back on track in MLS competition in July when they beat Montreal 3-1 at Saputo Stadium followed by 0-0 home draw with the Houston Dynamo. Sporting KC then went on the road earning a 2-0 victory over the Columbus Crew moving them back up the standings and into sole possessionoffirstplaceamongEasternConferencerivalsbeforedroppinga2-1decisionagainstHouston in theirfirstevermatchatBBVACompassStadium.

Three days later, Honduras upset a Spain side featuring three players from the team that recently won Euro 2012 to increase their chances of securing a spot in the knockout phase. Espinoza earned the game-winning assist to lift Honduras to the 1-0 victory. Fellow Major League Soccer professional Jerry Bengtson, from the New England Revolution, has scored all three goals for Honduras so far in the tournament. His game-winner against Spain was scored on Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea following a well-struck cross from Espinoza.
