We are very proud of the achievements of StockportGrammar School’s pupils. Girls and boys join us from localmaintained primary and independent preparatory schools. As well as securing outstanding academic qualificationsthrough learning and working together, the rich extracurricular life of the school encourages children to developtheir talents to the full. In these pages we have featured justa few examples of the many ways in which our pupils havetaken the opportunity to excel.

We want to invest in our pupils and provide them with themost up-to-date facilities whilst keeping our fee levels aslow as possible. However, we are not a wealthy school andhave no significant endowments, nor do we receive anyassistance from the state.

The Bursary Fund enables bright local children whosefamilies cannot afford the fees to benefit from theeducation we offer. Because every child makes a unique andspecial contribution to the health and vigour of our school, each child benefits personally from the diverse backgroundsand experiences of their friends. Opportunity should not berestricted by means and so your support for the fund isgreatly appreciated by the School, and by those individualchildren who benefit.

Andrew Chicken,

Headmaster

The Stockport Grammar School Bursary Fund

The profit we raise today goes directly to the Stockport Grammar School Bursary Fund. It isour goal to offer as many local children as possible the opportunity to come to the schoolregardless of their ability to pay. In the words of Emily Dove (OS 2010), one of the school’sformer bursary holders:

‘If the Bursary Scheme was not in place, I would simply not have had the opportunity to

attend SGS. I would have missed out on numerous experiences; a field trip to Anglesey, an

incredible Alpine mountaineering expedition, playing hockey for the senior team, captaining

the swimming team, playing the flute in school bands and taking part in so many other extra

curricular activities. The high quality teaching also enabled me to fulfil my potential and gain

a place at Birmingham Medical School.’

Oxbridge success

Twelve members of the Upper Sixth are

celebrating offers from Oxford and Cambridge.

Last year SGS was identified by the Sutton

Trust as one of ten schools nationally having

a significantly higher acceptance rate to

university than other institutions with similar

A Level results.

Oliver! wows sell-out

audiences

After playing to four full houses Oliver!

closed to rave reviews.

The production brought together nearly

200 pupils from across the school. Months

of preparation and dedication proved

worthwhile culminating in excellent,

professional performances.

Opportunity andAchievement

A day in the life of a Viking

Junior School Year 4 pupils were transported

back to the Dark Ages and Tudor times on a visit

to Murton Park’s living history village. Dressed in

clothing from the period, the children took part

in pottery, fieldwork, housework and soldier

training essential to maintaining and defending a

Viking settlement. As Tudors they learnt to write

with traditional quill and ink, dipped candles and

created room fragrances.

A summer in Namibia

22 Sixth Form pupils experienced a summer

they will never forget when they flew to

Namibia to spend the whole of July exploring

the country and working to help a school in the

tiny village of Dordabis. During their time at the

school our pupils constructed a lintel around

the base of the school fence to stop animals

from getting into the playground and painted

cartoon characters on the outside of the

buildings for the children to enjoy.

Pupils’ art displayed at

The Lowry

Three of the school’s top artists have had

their artwork displayed at the Lowry in

Salford as part of Living Edge magazine’s

school arts competition.

Particular congratulations go to Jessica

Hadfield whose work came runner-up in

the senior category.

Opportunity andAchievement

SGS host MUN Conference

200 pupils from 15 schools across the country

gathered at SGS for two days of political debate

at our Model United Nations conference.

The level of debate was high, and the pupils’

knowledge on their subject was boosted

thanks to guest speeches from local MP

Andrew Stunell OBE on international politics,

and Paul Smith from PricewaterhouseCoopers,

who spoke about the centrality of the internet

and its impact on international relations.

Sports stars represent England

First XV rugby captain James Flynn and first XI hockey

goalkeeper Martha Watson have trained tirelessly during

their time at SGS and this

year been honoured with the

opportunity to play for their

country in the Under-18s teams.

Martha stood out at rigorous

trials, beating off stiff

competition to secure her

place on the team. James

was picked after impressing

the selectors during his

performances for the North at the Under-18s divisional festival

at Broadstreet. The call-ups are a reflection of the high

standard of sport being played across the school, with another

successful year for our teams.

Junior photographers

Amongst six winners in our Junior Schoolphotography competition, Katie Bielinska andLeah Bird have gone a level further afterjudges in the national AJIS competition alsorecognised their talent. The girls received theirphotos (one of which is pictured left) as prizesfor their achievement.

results in this year’s competition,

with Alastair Watts and Miranda

Cupit finishing among the top 7%

in the UK and others receiving

The Vernon Jubilee Fund

If you're involved in a local charity or community group you'll be interested

to know that we unveiled our Jubilee Fund earlier this month aimed at

helping local causes in what is a difficult time for all organisations that rely

on fundraising or donations.

The Jubilee Fund is open to applications from local charities and

community groups. The successful applicants will each receive up to

£1,000 of the £5,000 on offer from the Vernon and we're looking for

groups or charities who can demonstrate that these funds will be used to

make a difference to our community.

For more information and details of how to apply visit our website at
