Communication and Language § Developing questioning skills and listening linking to their
importance in terms of discussion and problem solving. § Family Tree display — add family photo albums created
using the children’s family photographs. § Discuss any other things the stick man could be used as. § Ask prepositional questions as you read the story, ‘Where is
the stick?’ ‘Under the bridge’ etc. § Role-‐play masks of stick man repeating key phrases and
rhymes from the story. §
Personal, Social and Emotional Development § Discuss the feelings and emotions of the characters in the
stories. § Develop an emotions display using the book ‘Colour Me
Happy’ and Beat Baby resources. § Family Trees – draw pictures of family, siblings, parents,
grandparents etc. § Collect photographs of the classes families.
Mathematics § Measure and order sticks by length. § Measure trees (circumference). § Add weighing scales to role play -‐ kitchen
(indoor and outdoor) for weighing natural objects such as conkers, pebbles, shells and fur cones.
§ Days of the week rhyme/chant every session. § Measuring equipment in imaginative play i.e.
rulers, measuring tapes, spirit level e.g. builders yard (Block Play Area).
§ Number rhymes. § Problem-‐solving opportunities in play based
activities and in adult focussed groups. § 2D and 3D shape vocabulary. § Make fireworks using junk modelling materials
discussing size and names of 3d shapes. Collect data about each person’s family members e.g. how many people in our family? How many brothers do you have? Etc.
Physical Development § Dressing, undressing and fastenings especially during Dance Premier Sport’s
organised PE sessions. § Moving within the indoor and outdoor space with control and confidence. § Using the outdoor climbing frame equipment with safety, control and with
confidence. § Observes the effects of activity on their bodies during free play and during Dance
Premier Sport’s organised PE sessions. § Finger gym, Squiggle Whilst You Wiggle, mark making activities, scissor control
activities.
Literacy § Look for sound pairs in the story – face/race, best/nest. § Look at rhyme in the book. Create a work in progress rhyming
key person dictionary. Use it to create a short poem about the life of the Stick Man.
§ Play stick man soup, adding a stick for the ‘d’og’ and a stick for the’f’ire’ and one for the ‘b’at’.
§ Look at and trace the letter ‘s’ for ‘stick’ and ‘m’ for ‘man’. § Story sequencing cards. § Develop vocabulary from the various texts discussing feelings,
family and display on working walls. § Daily Jolly Phonics rhymes and Letters and Sounds activities. § Opportunities for mark-‐making available in all areas indoor and
outdoor. Ensure writing props, words and numbers are used in all areas.

materials that float and sink.
