Installation

Windshield QuickMountThe STi DRIVER’s QuickMount windshieldbracket is designed for unobtrusive andhassle-free mounting and removal.

1 Depress the adjustment button on thetop of the STi DRIVER (by the wordBELTRONICS) and slide the QuickMountbracket into the slot until it is locked intothe position which best fits the angle ofyour windshield (there are four settingsavailable). For extremely horizontal orextremely sloped windshields, theQuickMount bracket can be bent.

To ensure that the suction cups adhere to the windshield firmly, be sure to keep both your windshield andthe suction cups clean.

2 To adjust the STi DRIVER on yourwindshield, use the QuickMount adjustment button located on the top of theSTi DRIVER, and slide the STi DRIVERforward or backward to obtain a level position.

User’s TipYou can leave the QuickMount bracket inplace on your windshield, and easilyremove STi DRIVER by pressing the adjustment button and sliding the STiDRIVER off the mount. Again, be sure toposition the bracket where it won’t presenta hazard in the event of an accident.Additional mounts are available for othervehicles in your household.

7

N0TE: Depending on your vehicle, thelighter socket power may either be continuously on, or it may be switchedon and off with your ignition switch. Wesuggest using a direct-wire SmartPlugconnected to a switched circuit at thefuse box if the lighter socket is continuously on.

CAUTION: A few vehicles (including somePorsches) have windshields with a softanti-lacerative coating on the insidesurface. Use of suction cups will permanently mar this coating. Consultyour dealership or the vehicle owner’smanual to determine if your windshieldhas this coating.

WARNING: BELTRONICS cannot anticipate the many ways STi DRIVERcan be mounted. It is important that youmount STi DRIVER where it will notimpair your view nor present a hazard incase of an accident.

NOTE: When installed and adjusted properly, the back top edge of the STiDRIVER should rest solidly against yourwindshield.

PowerTo turn STi DRIVER on or off, press thePWR button located on the front left side. When you turn STi DRIVER on, it goesthrough a sequence of alerts.

If you prefer, you may program yourSTi DRIVER for a shorter power-onsequence. See the Programming section fordetails.

VolumePress and hold the VOLUME/MUTE button,(or Mute button on the SmartPlug) locatedin the center of the front panel, to adjust theSTi DRIVER’s alert volume level. The audiowill ramp up and down, accompanied by abar-graph on the display. Once you’vereached your preferred audio level, simplyrelease the button.

To change the direction of the audioramping (down instead of up or vice versa)simply release the volume/mute buttonquickly press and hold it again to change itsdirection.

Power-on indicationAfter STi DRIVER’s start-up sequence iscomplete, the alphanumeric display willshow Highway, AutoScan, City or City NoXto indicate which sensitivity mode isselected.

If you prefer, you can select alternatepower-on displays. See the Programmingsection for details.

Voice AlertsThe STi DRIVER provides digital voice announcements (factory default) for alerts.

If you prefer, you can turn off the voiceannouncement feature and have the STiDRIVER provide audible tones without thevoice announcement. See programmingsection for details.

AutoMuteYour STi DRIVER has our patentedAutoMute feature. After STi DRIVER alertsyou to a radar encounter at the volume youhave selected, the AutoMute feature willautomatically reduce the volume to a lowerlevel. This keeps you informed without theannoyance of a continuous full-volume alert.

If you prefer, you can turn theAutoMute feature off. See the Programmingsection for details.

MuteThe VOLUME/MUTE button, located in thecenter of the STi DRIVER’s front panel, allows you to silence the audio alert duringa radar encounter.

To mute the audio for a single specificsignal, briefly press the VOLUME/MUTEbutton. After that radar encounter haspassed, the mute will automatically resetand the audio will alert you to the nextencounter.

8

Sensitivity Button (SENS)The “SENS” button selects the STi DRIVER’s sensitivity mode. We recommend AutoScanmode for most driving.

Highway Mode (Highway)In this setting, the STi DRIVER will detect allsignals at maximum range.

AutoScan Mode (AutoScan)In this setting the STi DRIVER’s internalcomputer continuously analyzes allincoming signals and intelligently filters outunwanted X and K-band false alarms fromautomatic door openers and motionsensors. Full sensitivity is maintained on allother bands

City (City STD)In this setting, X and K-band sensitivity isfurther reduced to eliminate unwanted falsealarms in congested urban areas.

City NoX (City NoX)In this setting, K-band sensitivity is the sameas City STD, however, X-band is completelyturned off.

9

BrightnessThe STi DRIVER’s brightness is controlledby a sensor located behind the front displaylens. This sensor will automatically adjustthe display and backlit buttons based on theambient light in your vehicle. If you prefer, you can select a fixed brightness level, including Full Dark Mode. See the programming section for details.

SmartPlugSmartPlug is a special power cord that has a power-on indicator, a bright alert light that warns of radar or laser, and a convenient mute button right on the plug.

It’s the perfect addition for any vehiclewhere reaching the detector mute buttonon the windshield is a stretch. And fordiscreet night driving, put STi DRIVER inthe Dark Mode, and use the SmartPlug foryour visual alerts. Other cars won’t knowyou have a detector.

Two versions are included: A coiledSmartPlug that plugs into your lightersocket, and a Direct-wire SmartPlug modulethat’s wired into the electrical system, withan 8 foot straight cord to route to your STiDRIVER.

WARNING: Do not use the STi DRIVERCity NoX mode unless you areabsolutely certain that there are notraffic radar guns using X-band in yourarea.

Power ConnectorThe STi DRIVER’s power jack uses a telephone-type connector. This 4-conductorconnector only works with the includedcoiled SmartPlug or direct-wire cord.

Signal Strength Meter The STi DRIVER’s alphanumeric displayconsists of 280 individual LEDs, to providean intuitive ultra-bright display of signalstrength and text messages.

The STi DRIVER’s standard bar-graphsignal strength meter only displays information on a single radar signal. If thereare multiple signals present, STi DRIVER’sinternal computer determines which is themost important threat to show on the bar-graph meter.

When STi detects radar, it displays theband (X, K, Ka), and a precise bar-graph ofthe signal strength. When the STi DRIVERdetects a laser signal, the display will show“LASER.” When it detects a POP signal, thedisplay will show “POP.”

Threat DisplayYour STi DRIVER’s Threat Display option isan advanced display for experienceddetector users. Please use the STi DRIVERfor a few weeks to get familiar with its otherfeatures before using Threat Display.

To use the Threat Display instead ofthe bar graph signal strength meter, youmust select Threat Display in the STiDRIVER’s Programming (see pages 12-15).

The STi DRIVER’s Threat Display simultaneously tracks multiple radar signalsand their relative signal strength.

Threat Display can help you spot achange in your normal driving environment;for example, a traffic radar unit being operated in an area where there arenormally other signals present.

The Threat Display is actually a miniature spectrum analyzer. It shows whatband each signal is and its signal strength.

Ka9K2X1Above is the Threat Display if the STi

DRIVER was detecting a strong Ka-band, aweak K-band, and a weak X-band signal.

11

A few more examples will help youbetter see how the Threat Display works.

K9 X1Here Threat Display shows a strong

K-band signal, and a weak X-band signal.

Ka1 X9Here Threat Display shows a weak

Ka-band signal, and a strong X-bandsignal.

Threat Display DetailsThe band designators (X, K, Ka) will

stay on the display for a few seconds afterthe signal has passed. This allows you to seewhat the unit detected, even on very briefsignals.

Tech DisplayThe STi DRIVER’s Tech Display option is forthe experienced detector user. In thismode, the STi DRIVER will display theactual numeric frequency of the radar signalbeing received.

K 24.150Tech Display shows one K-band signal

at 24.150 gigahertz.Even long-time detector users will

require a significant amount of time to getfamiliar with this new level of informationabout detected signals.

Audible Alerts

For Radar signals:The STi DRIVER uses a geiger-counter-

like sound to indicate the signal strengthand type of radar signal being encountered. When you encounter radar, a distinctaudible alert will sound and occur faster asthe signal gets stronger. This allows you tojudge the distance from the signal sourcewithout taking your eyes from the road.

X-band = chirpingK-band = buzzingKa-band = double-chirpPOP = full double-chirpSWS = double buzz

For Laser signals:Since laser signals are a possible threat

no matter how weak, the STi DRIVER alertsyou to these bands at full signal strength.

For POP signals:Since POP signals are extremely fast K

or Ka bursts, and a possible threat no matterhow weak, the STi DRIVER alerts you tothese bands at full signal strength.

For Safety signals:The STi DRIVER will alert you to these

signals with a double-beep tone, and a corresponding text message. A completelisting of the text messages is on page 23.

NOTE: If you are operating the STiDRIVER in the Dark mode, the displaywill not display anything when a signal isdetected. Only the audio, and theflashing alert lamp on the SmartPlug willbe seen.

This is the factory setting, and it ishighly recommended that you use your STiDRIVER in this mode.

BandsMODIn this setting, STi DRIVER will warn youwith an audible alert, and associated textmessage stating which band has changedfrom the original factory setting (i.e. “SWSON”). This warning is displayed during thestart up sequence (standard or fast).

WARNING: Do not turn off a band unlessyou are absolutely certain that there areno traffic radar guns using that specificband in your area.

Interpreting AlertsAlthough the STi DRIVER has a comprehen-sive warning system and this handbook is ascomplete as we can make it, only experiencewill teach you what to expect from your STiDRIVER and how to interpret what it tellsyou. The specific type of radar being used,

the type of transmission (continuous orinstant-on) and the location of the radarsource affect the radar alerts you receive.

The following examples will give youan introduction to understanding the STiDRIVER’s warning system for radar, laserand safety alerts.

Explanation

You are approaching a continuous radarsource aimed in your direction.

An instant-on radar source is being used aheadof you and out of your view.

An instant-on radar source or laser source isbeing used nearby. This kind of alert requiresimmediate attention!

Laser is being used in the area. Because laser isinherently difficult to detect, any laser alertmay indicate a source very close by.

A moving patrol car with continuous radar isovertaking you from behind. Because thesesignals are reflected (reflections are increasedby large objects), they may or may not eventually melt into a solid point even whenthe patrol car is directly behind you.

Alert

The STi DRIVER begins to sound slowly, thenthe rate of alert increases. The Signal Meterramps accordingly.

STi DRIVER emits short alerts for a fewseconds and then falls silent only to brieflyalert and fall silent again.

STi DRIVER suddenly sounds a continuoustone for the appropriate band received. Allsegments in the Signal Strength Meter are lit.

A brief laser alert.

STi DRIVER receives weak signals. Thesesignals may be a little stronger as you passlarge, roadside objects. The signals increase infrequency.

19

Explanation

You are approaching a radar unit concealed bya hill or an obstructed curve.

A patrol car is traveling in front of you with aradar source aimed forward. Because signalsare sometimes reflected off of large objectsand sometimes not, the alerts may seem inconsistent.

A patrol car is approaching from the otherdirection, sampling traffic with instant-onradar. Such alerts should be taken seriously.

You are driving through an area populatedwith radar motion sensors (door openers, burglar alarms, etc.). Since these transmittersare usually contained inside buildings or aimedtoward OR away from you, they are typicallynot as strong or lasting as a real radarencounter.

Alert

STi DRIVER alerts slowly for a while and thenabruptly jumps to a strong alert.

STi DRIVER alerts intermittently. Rate andstrength of alerts may be consistent or varywildly.

STi DRIVER alerts intermittently. Rate andstrength of signal increases with each alert.

STi DRIVER gives an X-band or K-band alert intermittently.

CAUTION: Since the characteristics ofthese alerts may be similar to some ofthe preceding examples, overconfidence in an unfamiliar area canbe dangerous. Likewise, if an alert in acommonly traveled area is suddenlystronger or on a different band thanusual, speed radar may be set up nearby.

How Radar WorksTraffic radar, which consists of microwaves, travels in straight lines and is easily reflectedby objects such as cars, trucks, evenguardrails and overpasses. Radar works bydirecting its microwave beam down theroad. As your vehicle travels into range, themicrowave beam bounces off your car, andthe radar antenna looks for the reflections.Using the Doppler Principle, the radarequipment then calculates your speed bycomparing the frequency of the reflectionof your car to the original frequency of thebeam sent out.

Traffic radar has limitations, the mostsignificant of these being that it typically canmonitor only one target at a time. If there ismore than one vehicle within range, it is upto the radar operator to decide which targetis producing the strongest reflection. Sincethe strength of the reflection is affected byboth the size of the vehicle and its proximity to the antenna, it is difficult forthe radar operator to determine if the signalis from a sports car nearby or a semi-truckseveral hundred feet away.

Radar range also depends on the powerof the radar equipment itself. The strengthof the radar unit’s beam diminishes withdistance. The farther the radar has to travel, the less energy it has for speed detection.

Because intrusion alarms and motionsensors often operate on the samefrequency as X-Band or K-band radar, yourSTi DRIVER will occasionally receive non-police radar signals. Since these transmittersare usually contained inside of a building, oraimed toward the ground, they will generally produce much weaker readingsthan will a true radar encounter. As youbecome familiar with the sources of thesepseudo alarms in your daily driving, theywill serve as confirmation that your STiDRIVER’s radar detection abilities are fully operational.

How “POP” Works“POP” mode is a relatively new feature forradar gun manufacturers. It works by transmitting an extremely short burst, within the allocated band, to identifyspeeding vehicles in traffic. Once the targetis identified, or “POPPED,” the gun is thenturned to its normal operating mode toprovide a vehicle tracking history, (requiredby law).

21

How Laser (Lidar) WorksLaser speed detection is actually LIDAR(Light Detection and Ranging). LIDAR gunsproject a beam of invisible infrared light. The signal is a series of very short infraredlight energy pulses, which move, in astraight line, reflecting off your car andreturning to the gun. LIDAR uses these lightpulses to measure the distance to a vehicle.Speed is then calculated by measuring howquickly these pulses are reflected given theknown speed of light.

LIDAR (or laser) is a newer technologyand is not as widespread as conventionalradar, therefore, you may not encounterlaser on a daily basis. And unlike radardetection, laser detection is not prone tofalse alarms. Because LIDAR transmits amuch narrower beam than does radar, it ismuch more accurate in its ability to distin-guish between targets and is also more difficult to detect. AS A RESULT, EVENTHE BRIEFEST LASER ALERT SHOULDBE TAKEN SERIOUSLY.

There are limitations to LIDAR equip-ment. LIDAR is much more sensitive toweather conditions than RADAR, and aLIDAR gun’s range will be decreased byanything affecting visibility such as rain, fog,or smoke. A LIDAR gun cannot operatethrough glass and it must be stationary inorder to get an accurate reading. BecauseLIDAR must have a clear line of sight and issubject to cosine error (an inaccuracy, which increases as the angle between thegun and the vehicle, increases) police typically use LIDAR equipment parallel tothe road or from an overpass. LIDAR can beused day or night.

How TotalShield™ Technology WorksBeltronic’s TotalShield Technology keepsRF signals from radiating from the detector.Unlike other radar and laser detectors, whichmerely move their RF signals (local oscillators) to another frequency (whichwill be detectable by future detector-detec-tors), this revolutionary design keeps youunseen by current radar detector-detectors,including VG-2 and Spectre. This uniquedesign will also keep you unseen from anyfuture radar detector detectors as well.

Although the BELTRONICS STi DRIVERis a completely undetectable radar, laser andsafety detector, driving techniques and reactions to alerts can still draw unwantedattention. Here are a few examples:

1. Hitting the brakes immediately whenthe STi DRIVER provides an alert can broadcast use of a detector.

2. Visible power cords, brackets andsuction cup marks on the glass can alsoadvertise to others that you have a detector.

3. Traveling at night with a glow from aradar detector’s display visible from outsideyour vehicle can also draw unwanted atten-tion. The STi DRIVER offers adjustablebrightness, including a full dark modewhich will provide audio alerts, but novisual indication except for the alert LED onthe SmartPlug.

How Safety Radar WorksSafety Warning System, or SWS, uses amodified K-band radar signal. The SWSsafety radar system has 64 possiblemessages (60 currently allocated). The SWSmessages your STi DRIVER can display arelisted on the facing page.

From the factory, your STi DRIVER isprogrammed with SWS decoding OFF. Ifyou wish to detect this system, use theProgramming feature to turn STi DRIVER’sSWS decoding ON.

Note: Some of the safety messageshave been condensed, so that each messagecan be displayed on one or two screens onSTi DRIVER’s eight-character display.

Since Safety radar technology is relatively new, and the number oftransmitters in operation is not yet wide-spread, you will not receive Safety signalson a daily basis. Do not be surprised if youencounter emergency vehicles, roadhazards and railroad crossings that areunequipped with these transmitters. IfSafety transmitters become more prevalent, these Safety radar signals will become morecommon.
