From the Pastor’s desk…
We begin the season of the church called Lent on February 13th with
our Ash Wednesday Service. Lent is a northern European word meaning
“to lengthen”, which we can see as it is getting light earlier and staying lighter
longer in the evening. This time of the year and its increasing light is symbolic
to Christians as we remember Jesus being the light of the world.
The first recording of Lent was in 325 A.D. when the church set aside
the forty days of the Lenten season to be a time of preparation. Forty is used
many times in scripture. The people of Israel wandered in the wilderness for
forty years and it rained for Noah on the ark for forty days and forty nights.
Jesus was led into the wilderness for forty days in preparation for his ministry.
The question is asked, “Why do the dates of Lent and Easter change
every year?” Easter is determined by the lunar calendar and is celebrated on
the first Sunday after the first full moon of the northern hemisphere’s spring
equinox. This means that we will celebrate Easter anytime between the days of
March 22nd and April 25th. This year Easter is on March 31st.
We will once again use the forty days of Lent as our “preparation” time
in which we will take an honest look at ourselves and the way we are living,
and make the necessary changes to get back on track. We use the word
“repentance”, which means changing direction, turning or returning to God,
during this time.
I am excited about our theme this year and I hope you will be too.
The Sunday worship themes will focus on prayers: Why do we pray? How do
we pray? What kinds of prayer are there? How does God answer prayer?
May we take this Lenten preparation time seriously and use it to its
fullest purpose by preparing ourselves to be the followers and disciples of Jesus
that God created us to be.
Have a blessed and fulfilling Lent.
On the journey…. Gordie

Help Secure the Daycare Rooms and Church Building
The Trustees have decided that locks need to be installed on the Daycare doors to allow the teachers to lock
the rooms from the inside in the event of a security emergency. These would be similar to the door locks
used in the public school system.
Please contribute to the purchase of these locks by using your offering envelope and
mark SECURITY on the “Special Fund” line.
We are also looking for members interested in joining a “Security Team” to determine an overall security plan
for the church building. Please contact the church office if you able to help.

This month’s Gold Medals are not going to
a class. They are going to the Six Elementary and
Toddler Sunday School teachers. They are so
flexible and understanding. The winter curriculum
has been on back order for more than six weeks.
Our lessons have run out and they came together
offering ideas and letting me know that they can
still teach the Bible without premade lesson plans.
I was worried about over burdening our teachers
since most of them also teach public school during
the week.
They are a wonderful group of Teachers to
be working with. I am so glad God has led them to
teach for us. His works are all the more wonderful
because of them.
Thank You to our Gold Medalist Teachers!

Adult Lent Classes beginning

We are offering two wonderful classes for Lent this
year. Both classes will be offered on Sunday
mornings at 9:45am and Wednesday afternoons.
Forgiveness: Finding Peace through
Letting Go by Adam Hamilton
In his passionate and life-changing book
Forgiveness: Finding Peace Though Letting Go,
bestselling author Adam Hamilton explores
forgiveness in our relationship with God, with our
spouses or romantic interests, with our parents
and siblings, and with others in our lives.
This is a four week study.
The Way by Adam Hamilton
Travel with Adam Hamilton as he retraces the life
and ministry of Jesus Christ. Once again, Hamilton
approaches his subject matter with thoughtfulness
and wisdom, just as he did with Jesus’ crucifixion
in 24 Hours That Changed the World and with
Jesus’ birth in The Journey. Using historical infor-
mation, archaeological data, and stories of the
faith, Hamilton follows in the footsteps of Jesus
from his baptism to the temptations to the heart of
his ministry, including the people he loved, the
parables he taught, the enemies he made, and the
healing he brought.
This is a six week study
Please check the Education table for exact dates and times. As always if
you have any questions please contact Sarah McCall.
