A daughter of Coolmore Stud’s
leading first season sire Pride Of
Dubai (Street Cry) will be trained
by David Vandyke after Ontrack
Thoroughbreds’ Grant Morgan secured the filly
at the Magic Millions March Yearling Sale for a
session-topping $170,000 yesterday.
Morgan bought three QTIS fillies at this
year’s sale, conducted under a coronavirus
cloud that prevented some buyers attending
the Gold Coast, which continued his successful
raid on yearlings eligible for the lucrative bonus
scheme that has previously netted him Group
2 winner Savanna Amour (Love Conquers All).
The Queensland-based Ontrack
Thoroughbreds proprietor had to fend off a
number of rival parties to buy the River Junction-
consigned fillies, but Morgan was not surprised
to have the honour of purchasing the sale’s
highest-priced lot. Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING
Kentucky Derby rescheduled to SeptemberIn the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the
146th running of the Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f)
has been rescheduled from May 2 to September
5 and the Kentucky Oaks (Gr 1, 9f) has been
moved from May 1 to September 4. Churchill
Downs Incorporated CEO, Bill Carstanjen,
said: “Throughout the rapid development of
the Covid-19 pandemic, our first priority has
been how to best protect the safety and health
of our guests, team members and community.
As the situation evolved, we steadily made all
necessary operational adjustments to provide
the safest experience and environment. The
most recent developments have led us to make
some very difficult, but we believe, necessary
decisions and our hearts are with those who
have been or continue to be affected by this
pandemic.” Morning Briefing page 9 >>

“We knew that (she would be popular)
from when we bought Savanna Amour a few years ago from the first crop
of Love Conquers All and Baroda, by Epaulette, as you have to dig a bit
deeper for these good QTIS fillies,” Morgan said.
“They can win nearly $80,000 on a Saturday which is just fantastic
prize-money, and the good ones like her don’t come cheaply, so we went
a bit further than what we thought she’d be worth, but for a good QTIS
filly, we’re happy to have her.”
A half-sister to the J J Atkins Plate (Gr 1, 1600m)-placed Looks Like
The Cat (Husson), the filly is the eighth living foal out of South Australian
metropolitan winner Fiery Dee (Fraar) who has produced six foals to race
for four winners.
Catalogued as Lot 208, the
filly’s dam is also a half-sister to
Group 3 winner Silent Surround
(Face Value) who in turn is the
dam of Listed winner Silent
Command (Commands) and
this season’s stakes-placed Silent
Sovereign (Dalakhani).
River Junction’s Joe Heather
was thrilled to get “a really good
result and she is a lovely filly”.
“We were constantly
readjusting expectations with everything that is going on at the moment,”
he said.
“Expectations were changing daily and sometimes hourly as things
progressed, but we always knew that she had a lot of quality and she
presented well.
“She was the right product and we had confidence that we would be able
to achieve a result and it’s definitely gone above what we were hoping for.”
The strong competition for the filly highlighted the robust market
despite the impact of the coronavirus, he said.
“It’s probably a good sign that there is still confidence in the market
with everything else that’s going on. Magics have done a great job to get
the sale conducted in these conditions and made sure the buyers were
here,” Heather added.
“I know there were a couple of guys on the phone to agents on her
when she was going through the ring so it’s all worked out really well.”
Coolmore’s young stallion Pride Of Dubai is the sire of seven individual
winners of eight races headed by MRC Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m)
successful Tanker and the stakes-placed fillies Dubai Star and Bella Nipotina.
Vandyke will also train the second highest-priced yearling at the
QTIS sale after the Sunshine Coast-based horseman landed a Sebring
(More Than Ready) filly for $150,000 on day one, while Morgan will
also send an $85,000 Better Than Ready (More Than Ready) filly his
way.

GRANT MORGAN
“I thought she was the best Better
Than Ready filly in the sale (Lot 37) and she will also go to David,” he said,
“She’s out of a young mare and we like buying out of young mares. She
looked very much like Better Than Ready with his shape and size, so you’d
think she’ll come fairly early.”
Morgan’s other purchase this week, a filly by Bel Esprit (Royal
Academy) (Lot 212) who made $38,000, will also remain in Queensland
to be trained on the Gold Coast by Toby and Trent Edmonds who also
prepare the Ontrack Thoroughbreds-owned Baroda (Epaulette) who has
won three of her five starts.
He also bought a colt by first season sire Sooboog (Snitzel) from River
Junction for $55,000. He will be trained by Tony Gollan.
“If you had a good type, by a good stallion with a reasonable page then
they are still making reasonable money and that’s the end of the market
that we’ve been hunting,” Morgan said of the overall market conditions as
the coronavirus pandemic spreads.
“We haven’t found it easy because I think a lot of the agents,
syndicators and trainers have got similar shortlists at the end of the day.
“I know in the case of the Pride Of Dubai filly, we had to beat Tony Gollan,
Rob Heathcote, First Light Racing and Greg Eurell. They were all on that filly
and that’s why you had to pay that bit more for the nicer horses.
“I don’t think it’s been as bad as what everyone expected. It’s probably
been tougher at the lower end of the market but the nicer horses have still
made reasonable money.”
Slade and Edmonds team snap up filly by sire on fire for $120,000
Bruce Slade’s burgeoning Kestrel Thoroughbreds made its mark on
the sale ring yesterday, going to $120,000 with trainers Toby and Trent
Edmonds to land a filly for $120,000 by Pierro (Lonhro), Australia’s current
leading sire by earnings.
Newgate Farm’s director of stallions moved to the Gold Coast late last year
and has formed a close association with the Edmonds stable which led to the
partnership buying five yearlings at the March sale, headed by the Lyndhurst
Stud Farm-offered Pierro filly who is a half-sister to the Calaway Gal Stakes
(Listed, 1110m) placegetter Boomstress (Spirit Of Boom).
“It’s been a hard sale for vendors but the market has held up reasonably
well, I think,” Slade said.
“We did our homework and the colts market was as competitive as
ever, but the fillies were much softer and we were able to pick up what we
liked of those for what we thought was good value.”
Catalogued as Lot 367, the filly is the third foal out of the twice-
winning mare Pegasus Miss (More Than Ready) who is a half-sister to
Group 3 winner Metallic Crown (Northern Meteor) and Listed winner
Snitzepeg (Snitzel).
The Darryl Hansen-trained Boomstress won her first start at the
Sunshine Coast in December 2018 before finishing runner-up to Better
Reflection (Better Than Ready) in the Calaway Gal Stakes in the same
preparation.

“The Pierro filly is by the sire on fire
and he probably looks like being crowned Australian champion sire at
some stage and quite possibly this year,” he said.
“She’s an elite athlete who we thought was great buying with the
dam’s first foal a stakes horse. Her being by Pierro, she has the scope
and has lovely angles, balance and great movement. Pierro was at Gai’s
(Waterhouse) when I was there and this filly reminded me a lot of him.
“Just like Pierro (as a racehorse), he gives his horses cardio capacity
and they are able to mix it with the best at two and she has the size and
scope to make the weight-for-age improvement in her three-year-old year.
She can only get better at three and four.”
Slade and the Edmonds also purchased a Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo) filly
for $60,000 and daughters of Jet Spur (Flying Spur) and Husson (Hussonet),
as well as a colt by Rich Enuff (Written Tycoon), at the two-day sale.
Kestrel Thoroughbreds is now likely to focus on the Inglis Australian
Easter Yearling Sale, with Slade seeing the April auction as an opportunity
to strike during a time of doom and gloom.
“There’s so much uncertainty in the market at the moment and that
can spell opportunity,” he said.
“There will be high-quality horses there and while the coronavirus is a
worry, I also think that there’s a timeline on it, an eight to 12-week thing.
As soon as it passes, everyone will be straight back into action and getting
on with business.
“I will remain positive and try and make the most of it and Easter
might present opportunities.”
Nolan gets half-sister to his star filly Kisukano
Michael Nolan was yesterday determined to take home the half-
sister to his star juvenile filly Kisukano (Bel Esprit), who downed boom
two-year-old Rothfire (Rothesay) in Saturday’s $500,000 QTIS Jewel 2YO
(1200m) for the Toowoomba trainer.
The Better Than Ready (More Than Ready) filly, who was consigned
by Alexia Fraser Bloodstock as Lot 272, was bought by the trainer for
$115,000 after a spirited bidding duel.
She is the second foal out of the placed mare Kiss For Gran (Show A
Heart), whose first foal Kisukano has won three of her four starts, including
the lucrative Gold Coast race.
“She was my pick at the sale and we’ve got the sister so we wanted to
keep that going,” Nolan said.
“I thought $100,000 might have pulled her up and it kept going in
dribs and drabs so we went a couple more.
“Being a filly, she’s got the residual value as well and she’s a really
good type as the price reflected. We’ll syndicate her and try and get a good
group together to race her.”
Figures down but market competitive under difficult circumstances
Magic Millions’ Barry Bowditch was a relieved man last night. Year-
on-year comparative figures - aggregate, average, median and clearance
rate - may all be down for the company’s Gold Coast March Yearling Sale,
but the managing director was happy to have completed the important
auction despite the coronavirus threat.

The auction house was forced to
ban the general public from the QTIS sale at its Gold Coast complex
and implement a number of other health and safety measures to meet
government authorities’ protocols to help combat the spread of Covid-19.
The sale was in danger of being postponed when the federal
government last week imposed a 500-person limit to public gatherings,
but Magic Millions was allowed to press ahead with stringent conditions.
At the close of the two-day sale, 273 horses were traded at an average
of $28,529, a drop of 15 per cent, while the median fell from $25,000 to
$20,000 compared to 2019.
But Bowditch said: “From the team’s perspective, the vendors and
the buyers and participants who all made this work and to adapt to the
circumstances to ensure the sale ran as smoothly as it was, it was an
outstanding result that we should all be very proud of.
“I think in some cases horses made very good money. At all these
sales in recent times, the market has been quite selective on their lots but
obviously there was more reason for them to be more selective here.
“To clear 73 per cent and the average to be $28,500 was a great
outcome and something that I would have taken before the sale started.”
As for Magic Millions’ next sale, the vitally important Gold Coast
National Weanling, Broodmare and Yearling sales scheduled for May and
June, Bowditch said the company would continue to monitor the evolving
health crisis before making any decisions.
“It’s all out of our hands at the moment and we will be working with all
key authorities to plan towards having these sales as soon as we possibly
can and also to the best of our ability,” he said.
“Entries are still being taken and (weanling numbers) at this stage
may have been a little bit off last year but still very strong.”
Meanwhile, the 21-lot Magic Millions Gold Coast Autumn Racehorse Sale
was also held yesterday, achieving a 100 per cent clearance rate, with Godolphin’s
lightly-raced Cathars (Medaglia d’Oro) topping the session at $77,500.
A three-year-old gelding who won a Hawkesbury maiden at his last
start on March 7, Cathars was bought by the Victoria-based A List Stud.

Six for Spill The BeansAquis Farm’s late first season sire Spill The Beans
(Snitzel) landed his sixth winner yesterday
when Courtesy Bus (2 c ex Falvesa by Falvelon)
took out the QTIS 2YO Maiden Handicap
(1200m) at Mackay. The Jared Wehlow-trained
colt produced a dominant victory, coming
home two and a half lengths ahead of Colour
Perfect (Star Witness) with I Feel Real (Real
Saga) a further two lengths back in third. Spill
The Beans, who died in November last year, is
currently second on the leading first season sire
by winners and earnings behind Coolmore’s
Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry).
Tagaloa newfavourite for SlipperBlue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner
Tagaloa (Lord Kanola) has taken over
favouritism ahead of Gai Waterhouse and
Adrian Bott’s Farnan (Not A Single Doubt)
for Saturday’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1,
1200m) after the pair drew barriers six and 14
respectively. The TAB wound Tagaloa into $5
with Farnan and Blue Diamond runner-up
Hanseatic (Street Boss) both at $6. Pago Pago
Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Prague (Redoute’s
Choice) is on the fourth line of betting at $13
and heads the team from the Ciaron Maher and
David Eustace stable which has four runners in
the field and first emergency Rathlin (Fastnet
Rock).
Begg laments wide drawMeanwhile, the barrier draw was not so
favourable for Graham Begg’s Chairman’s
Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) winner Mildred
(Hinchinbrook) who landed gate 17 - which
will be brought down to 14 if the emergencies
fail to gain a start. "It's not ideal," Begg
said. "How else can I describe it? It makes
it challenging. Farnan has drawn just a bit
inside of us and he's been going forward in
his races so hopefully we're able to use him to
come across." Aside from being disappointed
with the draw, Begg said he was delighted
with the way Mildred had come through
her recent third in the Reisling Stakes (Gr 2,
1200m) at Randwick last Saturday.
Global Quest suffers elevated temperatureChris Waller reported yesterday that one of
his two Slipper contenders, Global Quest
(More Than Ready), had displayed an elevated
temperature but it has since been resolved. The
trainer said his colt was still eating well and did
not miss any work, however a blood sample
will be taken for testing and the results will be
reported to the stewards. Global Quest was
yesterday a $71 chance in the market for the
$3.5 million two-year-old feature.
Brandenburg headsto George RyderRandwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) placegetter
Brandenburg (Burgundy) will try to add his
name to the list of three-year-olds to beat
older horses in feature races this season
when he runs in the George Ryder Stakes (Gr
1, 1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday. "He's going
to run and Glen Boss will ride," trainer John
Sargent said. "I was going to trial him but
he galloped well this morning and he won
the Hobartville Stakes at Rosehill a couple
of starts ago. There's no reason not to. It's a
good form race for the Doncaster, so he'll be
running. Also, we're low down the order of
entry for the Doncaster, we've realised now,
so we probably want to get some more points
to get in there."
Two options for Splintex Mark Newnham is hoping to run Splintex
(Snitzel) in The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) but could
be forced to start him in the Darby Munro
Stakes (Listed, 1200m) on the Rosehill program,
with the three-year-old sitting equal 22nd in
the ballot for the Group 1 contest which has
a field limit of 14 plus four emergencies. "I'd
like to run him in The Galaxy," Newnham said.
"His career-best performances have been over
1100 metres at Rosehill and he will only have
50 kilos. You don't get many chances to run
a really fast horse in a Galaxy with no weight.
But it does look this year that it has come up an
above-average field on nominations. If he's not
there he can run in the Darby Munro."
Pippie to take aimat William ReidChris Meagher has said that Pippie (Written
Tycoon) will be ridden more conservatively
when she tries to make it back-to-back elite
level wins in Friday's William Reid Stakes (Gr
1, 1200m) at Moonee Valley. "She probably
won't get the 1200 metres if she runs the
times she did early in the Oakleigh Plate, so
we'll restrain her a touch," Meagher said. "I
knew nothing would lead her but in saying
that you want to run a touch slower and go
through the gears on Friday night which she
will as she's not a hard pulling horse. We had
to ride her like that at Caulfield because we
drew near the outside and had to get across.
She'll probably lead again, lead into the
straight, and if she can hold on, terrific, but
they'll be swamping her late."

Nature Strip ruledout of Group 1Chris Waller yesterday ruled out a William
Reid start for Nature Strip (Nicconi) with the
five-year-old instead remaining in Sydney for
the $2.5 million TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)
at Randwick on April 4. Nature Strip started
his current campaign in Melbourne when he
was beaten as favourite in the Black Caviar
Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Flemington
last month before heading back to Sydney
where he won the Challenge Stakes (Gr 2,
1000m) at Randwick. "We'll probably give him
a trial eight days before the TJ to make sure that
he's nice and fit," Waller said on Twitter. "I did
put a nom in for Friday at Moonee Valley but he
won't run."
Sweet Thomasdual nominatedThe weather in Sydney is set to determine where
Sweet Thomas (Dylan Thomas) will progress
his Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) campaign. The
Matthew Smith-trained stayer is entered for
Saturday's Mornington Cup (Listed, 2400m)
in Victoria along with the N E Manion Quality
Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) at Rosehill. Smith said he
would accept in both races before deciding on
where the gelding will start. "It all depends on
the track and if the track is OK at Rosehill then
I'll probably stay and run him up here," Smith
said. "But if the track looks like being no good
then I'll more than likely send him down. I can't
afford to miss a run with him and they're the
only two options for him.”
Mr Quickie heading northDamien Oliver will continue his partnership
with Mr Quickie (Shamus Award) when the
four-year-old heads to Randwick for next
month’s Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m). Oliver
was on board the gelding for the first time when
finishing ninth in the All-Star MIle (1600m) on
Saturday and trainer Phillip Stokes yesterday
confirmed the partnership would stay intact
in the $3 million contest on April 4. "We were
happy with the run," Stokes told Racing.com.
"It was where he just ended up in the run, he
couldn't get his momentum going. Damien
Oliver was very happy with him and it was
a definite pass. He just couldn't get rolling
into the race when he wanted to and I think
he had more to offer. We'll probably go to the
Doncaster in three weeks and Damien Oliver
will stick with him."
The Candy Man to miss DoncasterMeanwhile, The Candy Man (Casino Prince)
is out of contention for the Doncaster Mile
after trainer Barry Baldwin yesterday pulled
the pin on a lead-up race at Eagle Farm
on Saturday. "It is no use taking a horse to
Sydney when not fully fit, let alone for a race
like the Doncaster. You are just asking for
trouble," Baldwin said. "In these cases you
have to err on the side of caution. He is now
going for a couple of days on the water walker
and then we will get him back in the stables
for the winter carnival. The Candy Man can
run in a 1400 metre race at Eagle Farm next
month and then head to the Doomben Cup
via the Lord Mayor's Cup."
Danon Premiumarrives in SydneyLeading Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)

Sydney yesterday after his flight from Japan was

Jockeys to charterflight for SlipperA group of high-profile jockeys will take a
charter flight from Melbourne to Sydney
to ride at the Golden Slipper meeting.
Racing Victoria has imposed biosecurity
conditions on interstate travel for jockeys
while coronavirus protocols are in place with
the riders to use either private vehicles or
private aircraft. Sydney-based jockeys Hugh
Bowman and Tommy Berry are being driven
to Melbourne for Friday night's William
Reid Stakes meeting. They will then join
Craig Williams, Damien Oliver, Mark Zahra,
Damian Lane, Billy Egan, Michael Walker
and Michael Dee on a flight to Sydney for
Saturday's Golden Slipper meeting.
Melham callsfor weight increaseBen Melham believes Australia should follow
New Zealand's lead and raise jockey weights by
two kilograms in response to the coronavirus
outbreak. NZTR announced yesterday that
the weights will rise from Friday. "This is a no
brainer and should be brought in immediately,"
the star jockey tweeted. "Imperative to keep
jockey immune systems as healthy as possible
so the industry can continue!"
Hole in track ends Cranbourne meetingRacing at Cranbourne has been halted after the
discovery of two holes near the finishing post.
The first three races on yesterday’s program
were run without incident before a tiring
Denhill (Denman) fell in race four, a 1500-metre
maiden plate, and apprentice Nathan Punch
landed on the ground. The Victorian Jockeys'
Association said Punch may have suffered a
broken collarbone but appeared to escape
further injury, while Denhill was uninjured in
the incident. A drainage issue appears to be
the cause of the affected area near the winning
post. Cranbourne is scheduled to host another
ten meetings this season, the next a night fixture
on March 27.
Picnic and non-TAB meetings added toRiverina calendarRacing NSW yesterday announced the addition
of a picnic meeting scheduled to take place
at Wagga Wagga’s Riverside course on March
28. "With coronavirus issues forcing picnic
meetings to be cancelled around the state, our
club has been working with Racing NSW to try
and add a picnic meeting to help participants
earn prize-money," said Steve Keene, CEO
of Murrumbidgee Turf Club. Additionally, a
non-TAB race meeting has been scheduled
for Albury on April 4. This is a result of the
cancellation of the Hillston and Tocumwal race
meetings.

QRIC staff isolatedThe Queensland Racing Integrity Commission
will isolate key staff on non-race days to
ensure it can continue to operate effectively
in the coming months. Racing will continue
in Queensland in three codes around the state
without patrons until further notice because
of the coronavirus pandemic. QRIC boss Ross
Barnett said the commission was taking steps to
isolate those staff members who were essential
in the running of race meetings. "QRIC stewards,
veterinarians, integrity team, sample collection
officers and licensing and registration staff are
working from home as much as possible and
will come into the office for essential tasks
only," Barnett said in a statement. "If we keep
these staff members separated it gives them
every chance of remaining well to continue the
integrity functions for racing."
Lafferty forced into isolationIn-form apprentice Laura Lafferty has been
forced into self-isolation after returning from
a holiday in Singapore, narrowly missing the
deadline for the implementation of the new
quarantine measures. The 21-year-old is not
displaying any symptoms of Covid-19 but will
be unable to ride trackwork or attend the races
until March 30. “Disheartening news, but I will
not let this hamper ongoing progression as
much as possible,” Lafferty said on Twitter. “I
will use this time to continue my training and
race analyses to come back refreshed, bigger,
better and more determined than ever before!
Thank You all for your understanding and
support.”
Bensley to depart Sky RacingJournalist Andrew Bensley has announced that
he will leave Sky Racing and Sky Sports Radio
next month. The broadcaster revealed on his
Twitter feed yesterday that after 21 years with
the Tabcorp-owned media outlet, his last day
on air would be April 25. "It's been a decision
that my family and I have been discussing over
the past few months and along with the Sky
management, feel that at the end of the (Sydney
autumn) carnival, it's the right time for yours
truly to leave," Bensley said. "It's been 40 years
non-stop (that) I've been working in radio and
TV and I just feel the body needs a break after
being in the job for such a long time." Bensley
joined Sky Racing in 1998.
NEW ZEALAND
NZ racing implement coronavirus measures
Racing in New Zealand will take place behind
closed doors from today after a number of
measures were put in place to attempt to
reduce the potential spread of the coronavirus.
The only people permitted to attend meetings
will be those jockeys competing at the meeting,
trainers with runners engaged at the meeting,
stable staff of those trainers as advised to the
club and essential race day personnel. “We
have the support of our recognised industry
organisations – the trainers, jockeys and owners
– along with our racing clubs to take whatever
steps that we can to provide an appropriate
framework to allow racing to continue,” New
Zealand Thoroughbred Racing CEO Bernard
Saundry said In addition to limiting personnel
on-course NZTR, with the support of the NZ
Jockeys’ Association, has issued a directive that
jockeys must not accept riding engagements
between Islands.
NZB monitoringcorona situationNew Zealand Bloodstock is watching the
Covid-19 situation closely with regards to
how it might affect upcoming sales held at
Karaka and in Christchurch. A decision on
whether the imminent sales take place will
be made on April 1, the date the New Zealand
government will announce if the recently
imposed travel restrictions will remain in force.
Travel restrictions announced by the Australian
government will also be taken into account.
NZB said they would continue to assess the
situation and add any updates to their website,
www.nzb.co.nz.
Levante likely for Group Breeders’ StakesMatamata trainers Ken and Bev Kelso could
launch a two-pronged assault on next month’s
NZ Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 1,
1600m) at Te Aroha with the emerging Levante
(Proisir) a possible to join her stablemate
Supera (Savabeel). Levante suffered her
first defeat in five starts when beaten into
second in Saturday’s Wellington Guineas
(Gr 2, 1400m) after bombing the start. “She
travelled home well and has eaten pretty well
since,” Ken Kelso said. “We will give her a jog
around over the next couple of days and see
where we are. Australia is off the cards now
because of the virus. But we have got a couple
of options and the Breeders’ is one and there is
the Cambridge Breeders’ at Te Rapa, dropping
back to 1200 metres, but that is six weeks away.
The New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’
is three weeks away so we will be wanting to
make a call by the end of this week in which
direction we are heading.”

China Horse Club raptto secure HasahaloChina Horse Club's bloodstock assistant Michael
Smith was yesterday looking forward to Hasahalo
(Savabeel) joining their broodmare band after
going to a new online record of $670,000 to get
the Group 1-winning mare on gavelhouse.com’s
Monday night sale. "She’s a standout physical that
was a Group winning two-year-old and runner
up in the Karaka Million,” Smith said. “She was
then able to train on at three and add a Group
1 Classic to her resume. She’s by New Zealand’s
Champion Sire in Savabeel and is from a beautiful
family with the speed and precocity to go early
and the progressiveness to train on. Being out
of an Encosta De Lago mare who was out of a
Blue Diamond runner-up by Danehill gives her
a potent genetic makeup that we are looking
forward to breeding from.”

Lui’s Derby contenders please ahead of featureFrancis Lui was satisfied with Golden Sixty
(Medaglia D’Oro) and More Than This
(Dutch Art) after his two leading Hong Kong
Derby (Listed, 2000m) contenders worked
at Sha Tin yesterday morning. Golden Sixty
heads into Sunday’s final leg of the Four-
Year-Old Classic Series with the Hong Kong
Classic Mile (Listed, 1600m) and Hong Kong
Classic Cup (Listed, 1800m) trophies already
secured. More Than This was second in the
former and third in the latter and will seek
revenge on his stablemate when they both
attempt 2000 metres for the first time. “Both
jockeys were happy with how the horses
galloped this morning,” Lui said. “It’s the
same as usual this week, it’ll be normal work
and the two horses have good form. They’re
ready so now it all depends on Thursday’s
draw, we need a bit of luck.”
Columbus leads theKiwis in HK Derby questColumbus County (Redwood) will attempt to
enhance the remarkable record of New Zealand-
bred runners in Sunday’s blue riband. Nine
horses born in New Zealand have captured the
Derby this century – make that six of the last ten
and three of the last four – including two of the
all-time greats of Hong Kong racing, Vengeance
Of Rain (Zabeel) and Ambitious Dragon (Pins).
Columbus County’s trainer Casper Fownes is well
aware of that fact. “You’re always a chance with a
quality New Zealand-bred horse,” he said. “They
produce so many great stayers, they’ve had so
many that have won big races in Australia over the
years, and also in Hong Kong.”
Ting’s Amazing Starseeking redemptionJimmy Ting is hoping Amazing Star (Darci Brahma)
can put a mishap in the gates behind him when
he takes his place in the Class 2 Begonia Handicap
(1200m) at Happy Valley today. “The horse’s form
is good, he’s still fit and he looked very good in his
most recent trial on the dirt,” the trainer said. The
gelding kicked off his 2019/20 campaign on a mark
of 58 and has since seen his figure skyrocket to 94.
However, his unbeaten streak halted in dramatic
fashion last time after he became fractious in the
gates and broke through the front in late February.
The five-year-old wound up finishing seventh after
being reloaded. “When he broke through the gates,
I knew the second time he would be a bit slow out
because he’s a go-in-front type of horse,” Ting said.
INTERNATIONAL
British racing offuntil end of AprilThe British Horseracing Authority yesterday
announced that all UK racing from today will
be called off until the end of April in the wake
of the Covid-19 pandemic. Nick Rust, chief
executive of the BHA, said: “This is a national
emergency the like of which most of us have
never seen before. We’re a sport that is proud of
its connection to rural communities and to the
local businesses that support our industry. But
our first duty is to the health of the public, our
customers and to racing industry participants
and staff so we have decided to suspend racing
following the government’s latest advice.”
Major British meetings lostThe BHA had already announced late on Monday
that the three-day Grand National meeting at
Aintree, scheduled to start on April 2, had been
called off. This latest update means the jumps
season has effectively ended. It is however
the start of the upcoming flat season which is
likely to be impacted the most. The traditional
season opener, the Lincoln Handicap (1m)
was due to take place at Doncaster on March
28, followed by a succession of Classic trials
including the Craven meeting at Newmarket
and the Greenham meeting at Newbury. The
first classics of the season, the 2,000 Guineas
(Gr 1, 1m) and the fillies’ equivalent, the 1,000
Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) are scheduled to take place
at Newmarket on the opening weekend in May.
Grand National cancellation to cost millionsEven before the announcement that racing
had pulled up stumps, bookmakers in Britain
were counting the cost of the decision to call
off next month’s Grand National which has a
betting turnover of approximately £300 million
(A$602 million). "The cancellation of the
Grand National meeting is a devastating loss
for everyone and will cost the racing industry
millions at a time when we are already feeling
the strain of a completely decimated sporting
calendar," Unibet's Brett Williams said. "All
bets on the Grand National have been voided."
Simon Clare, PR director for Ladbrokes Coral,
echoed Williams’ words. "The Grand National
is the biggest betting horse race of the year, so
its cancellation is clearly a blow to the sport, to
betting operators and to racing fans," he said.
Date changes forTattersalls salesUK auction house Tattersalls has announced
date changes to it’s upcoming sales following
the BHA’s suspension of racing and the British
government’s guidelines for dealing with the
Covid-19 pandemic. The Tattersalls Ascot March
Sale, scheduled to take place Thursday March 19
has been cancelled. The Tattersalls Ascot Breeze
Up Sale, scheduled to take place Tuesday March
31 and Wednesday April 1, and the Tattersalls
Craven Breeze Up, scheduled to take place April
13 to April 15 have both been postponed and will
be amalgamated into a new combined fixture in
Newmarket taking place from Wednesday April
29 to Friday May 1. The Tattersalls Guineas Breeze
Up and Horses in Training Sale will be postponed
until Wednesday May 27.

Australia’s major role in the 2020
Kentucky Derby will be delayed
with the news confirmed overnight
that America’s greatest race will be
postponed, from May 2 until the first Saturday in
September, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
However the process of assembly,
installation and testing of the new Derby
starting gates is likely to be soon underway with
Australian manufacturer Steriline expecting the
arrival this week - via sea - of the 20 bank stalls
which will be used exclusively for the Run To
The Roses.
It’s not breaking news that the South
Australian company secured the commission
after being approached by Churchill Downs
Incorporated mid-way through last year. It’s
been widely reported in the United States, but
had little publicity here and it’s one hell of a
story which is worth a little further exploration.
In part, it’s a great story of an Australian
company, whose product is Australian owned,
designed and manufactured, conquering the
world - plus there’s a tiny element of Victor
Kiam and the Remington shaver. "I liked it
so much, I bought the company,” was Kiam’s
catchphrase.
The circumstances were not exactly the
same but Steriline’s managing director John
Fargher, who joined the company in 1994 and
then acquired it in 2006, says the Kentucky
Derby contract is a highlight of Steriline’s many
business successes which boast the export of
racing equipment to more than 50 countries
and supply to major organisations including
the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Victoria Racing
Club, Australian Turf Club, Meydan, Royal
Ascot and Riyadh (home of the recent and
inaugural $US20 million Saudi Cup).
“It’s absolutely huge. We aspire to be the
world leader in starting gates so you want to be
starting the very best races. We’ve started every
Dubai World Cup, we start the Melbourne Cup
plus all the major races in Sydney and Brisbane
along with Royal Ascot, Newmarket and Hong
Kong,” Fargher told ANZ Bloodstock News.
The Kentucky Derby gates, weighing
between ten and eleven tonnes according
to Fargher, were flat packed and despatched

in shipping containers to the West Coast of
America. “We pack them carefully and insist
they stay in the containers until they get on
site. We send one of our team to supervise the
assembly and installation and, longer term,
provide the service and maintenance and
repair if required. There’ll be a lot of trialling
and training before the Derby,” Fargher said.
The process began last year with Churchill
Downs inquiring as to who made the 24-horse
gates for the Melbourne Cup. “They found out it
was Steriline and contacted us and asked if they
could have a look at our operation. I suggested
they come to Melbourne or Sydney but they
said ‘hey that’s a long way to go.’
“We have a 22-stall Steriline gate at York in
the UK and it just so happened that the Ebor
meeting was coming up so they sent three of
their people to York and we met up there. It
was really the obvious place to demonstrate the
dependability and reliability of our product,”
said Fargher, whose pitch also noted that every
starting gate in the UK has been manufactured
by Steriline.
“They looked at the style of gates which
would meet their requirements for the Kentucky
Derby. They wanted one bank of stalls to move
away from the two sets of gates, which has been
used until now, for the race and caused some
problems.
“The slight concern for me was during
that inspection at York, they said there were a
few things they wanted to change. We were a
bit apprehensive about that, so I said I would
come to Churchill (Downs). I spent a few days
climbing all over their gates, watching races and
trials and we were able to reach a compromise.
“While their dimensions are slightly
different, we’ve got gates in 52 countries and
we see plenty of American horses race in Dubai
and other places without any problem,” Fargher
said of the gates which were about ten weeks in
construction.
Fargher said the Churchill Downs
commission might be significant in expanding
Steriline’s presence in North and South
America.
“There’s about four or five companies doing
similar work and Steriline can’t depend on local
markets alone. We need international markets
to sustain and expand the business and to stay
relevant and increase our knowledge base. We
need to understand the direction the industry
is heading; we need to know about it if there
is a change of direction and we’re fortunate
that some customers including the Hong Kong
Jockey Club have been generous in assisting us
with research and development.
“There is increased pressure from an
Occupational, Health and Safety perspective
that we have to do all we can to ensure the
safety people working at the gates and pressure
from animal welfare groups to make them as
safe as possible for the horses. We’re constantly
working on these things with safety, ease of
operation and reliability always priorities.
“There’s been a few game changers in my
view. Opening out the back of gates, so it’s not
a regimented rectangle, has given the horses
more freedom and loading is safer and faster
and there’s less scratchings at the barriers. The
high-density padding for human and horse
protection has reduced the noise and that’s
meant horses get less flighty. Reducing the
noise has been significant,” said Fargher who
added that industry consensus now was that
“open top” gates were unsafe.
The Steriline gate, for the Kentucky Derby,
replaces Churchill Downs' standard 14-horse
gate and the attached six-stall auxiliary gate and
will eliminate the gap between barrier 14 in the
main gate and barrier 15 in the secondary bank.
Celebrated dual Derby winning jockey
Mike Smith, at the time of the announcement,
said: “I think it's a great thing for the Derby.
You were at a bit of a disadvantage when you
drew either the one or the two or even far, far
out because of the big gap in between. It would
push the 20 horse basically up against the fence
and the one horse had to kind of come around
the (inside) fence.”
The Kentucky Derby, which has an
estimated $400 million economic impact
for the Louisville area, was postponed once
previously - in 1945 when held in June - after
the U.S. government temporarily suspended
racing nationwide for much of the first half of
that year.
