Haunui Farm’s Managing Director, Mark Chitty said, “Wecouldn’t have asked for a better start to Showcasing’scareer and Iffraaj’s progeny just keep getting better, withhim not only the leading Three-Year-Old sire but sittingthird on the General Sires table behind Savabeel andDarci Brahma and ahead of O’Reilly, Pins andTavistock.“Both stallions have seen service fee increases in theNorthern Hemisphere and they are certainly in far superiorpositions in terms of racetrack and sale ring performancethan they were at this time last year. That being said, weare mindful of the current climate in the New Zealandbreeding industry and it is with that in mind, that we haveset our fees for 2015 at what I am sure breeders will agree, are very reasonable and competitive levels.”The stud announced that both stallions will serve strictly

Leading to Success

The final week in Dubai on the DarleyFlying Start calendar has commonlybeen tipped by our predecessors as thepinnacle of the programme and, as thelast of the fireworks on World Cup nightburnt out last Saturday, none of us wereleft in any doubt.

With a few less pyrotechnics but withjust as much sparkle, the equine talentthat put on their show earlier in theevening did not disappoint. Whilst thecarnival itself may have exposed a lackof internationally-trained horses in thelimelight on the big night, they mostcertainly turned up to the party. Winnersrepresenting America, South Africa,England, Ireland and a brace from Franceadded a great deal of “world” to thecups.

When it came to the main event, theAmerican and Japanese raiders put up a

good fight, but none could hold off thecourageous Prince Bishop (Dubawi),who battled from the very start. Howfitting that in its 20th renewal, the Gr.1Dubai World Cup should be won by thehome team.

Over the past three months, we havefelt a part of that “home team” as wehave lived in and learnt about Dubai. Itis still remarkable to think that the citysprung out of the desert in a matter ofdecades into the world-class destinationit is today. However, any remainingbafflement as to how Dubai has grownand prospered in such a short period oftime was recently dissolved followingour meeting at the beginning of lastweek with the man who built it.

In a happy and relaxed atmosphere,we were lucky enough to converse withand ask questions to His Highness

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid AlMaktoum; the man who has afforded usthe opportunity to travel and learnabout the thoroughbred industry aroundthe world for the past two years and towhom we are all eternally grateful.

It was in a slightly surreal setting of aJapanese restaurant surrounded bytempura and sushi that he let us into hissecret to success. His advice to us wassimple; believe you are the best and thebest you shall become. It seems thatwith the power of positivity so much canbe achieved.

recent Auteuil winner Gitane Du Berlais (Balko), wholanded the Gr.1 Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase at Sandown inJanuary, Blood Cotil (Enrique) and Valseur Lido(Anzillero), as he bids to win the race for the first time. Tony McCoy, who will be having his final rides in Ireland

at the Fairyhouse Easter Festival, will be on board eithercourse winner Noble Emperor (Spadoun) or Gilgamboa(Westerner), who have been left in the race by theirrespective trainers Tony Martin and Enda Bolger. Otherleading contenders at this stage look to be the NoelMeade-trained Apache Stronghold (Milan), Clarcam(Califet), trained by Gordon Elliott, and Colm Murphy’sEmpire Of Dirt (Westerner). There is likely to be a strong British challenge for the

third running of the Gr.1 Irish Stallion Farms EBF MaresNovice Hurdle, which was won by Annie Power(Shirocco) in 2013 and Adriana Des Mottes (Network)last year. The Harry Fry-trained Bitofapuzzle (Tamure)and Alan King’s The Pirate’s Queen (King’ Theatre),third and fourth behind Glens Melody (King’s Theatre) atthe Cheltenham Festival, head the entries for the€100,000 race and they are set to be joined by DesertQueen (Desert King), another trained by Fry, and PeterBowen’s Rons Dream (Kayf Tara).Of his runners, trainer Harry Fry said, “Bitofapuzzle hascome out of Cheltenham very well and she seems to be ingood order. She was only beaten a head and a neck atCheltenham and the plan is to run at Fairyhouse on Sunday. “It will be a competitive race and she’ll take her chance,as will Desert Queen, who has looked impressive winningher two novice hurdles very easily. This will represent a bigstep up in class for her, but there isn’t another Gr.1 mares’novice hurdle between now and the end of the season, soshe’ll run as well.”A total of 18 horses remain and again Willie Mullins is

strongly represented, having left five in the race. Unbeatenin six starts, Morning Run (King’s Theatre) heads thequintet and others that could represent the Championtrainer include Uranna (Panoramic), a Listed winner atSandown in February, and the promising Gowran Parkwinner Whiteout (Samum).

Leading breeze-up consignor Con Marnane hasquickly risen to the top of his game and hasdeveloped Bansha House Stables into a top of the

range training facility. He has hand picked 45 yearlingsfrom last year’s European yearling sales that will beoffered at breeze up sales this year between Brightwells(featured on page 8), DBS, Tattersalls UK, Arqana,Goresbridge and BBAG.Consistently hitting the leading tables at all venues,

Marnane and his wife Theresa’s Bansha House Stables isresponsible for 17 Gr.1 performers and 73 Stakes horses, including the multiple Gr.1 winner and Darley sire Rio DeLa Plata, the Gr.1 Middle Park winner and sire AmadeusWolf, the Gr.1 Racing Post Trophy scorer Palace Episodeand the Gr.1 July Cup heroine and Champion EuropeanSprinter Fleeting Spirit, whom he purchased for €35,000,sold to Anthony Stroud for 90,000gns, and who wassubsequently sold in foal to Galileo as part of the PaulynDispersal at Goffs in 2013 for €1,100,000.With statistics and results that most trainers would be

envious of, this feat is definitely more judgement than luckas inspection behind the scenes of his impressive CountyTipperary operation demonstrates.Having spent a lot of time in Australia and America with

some of the top trainers and horse people, the purposebuilt barns, which are set at the foot of the GalteeMountains, have an Australian design and feel and theethos to keep everything as natural as possible comesacross in his approach. “We keep some of the horses instables and others in groups of six to ten together in largeairy barns, which is more natural, as they are happiertogether. We make our own hay.”

Keeping things simple and balanced with nutritionMarnane said: “We use Red Mills feed and we don’t addany supplements.”Describing the extensive facilities, he explained: “Wehave a seven furlong horse-shoe fully railed sand and fibregallop with a smooth hill, and a three-furlong circle canterwhere they can really switch off. We do 80% of the workon this gallop.“We have the large horse walker in the centre of thecircular gallop, which I designed. It takes 15 horses at atime and they love going on to it. “We have starting stalls in the yard and every horse hasto walk into them, stand and walk out every day aftercantering and before they come back to the yard, so thatthey are used to them. “I added the equine swimming pool in 2004. We don’tuse it that much, but every horse will swim twice or threetimes to educate them for their new trainers.

“We used treadmills in Australia and I have the sametype here. We use it for building muscle tone and stamina, and we also have a large lunge ring.”A hard-working grafter himself, Marnane, who runs the

yard like clock-work, also pays credit to a top-quality teamthat he has around him. “I have a total of 15 top class staffworking in the yard and office. Mike O’Brien is my righthand man in the yard. We are so lucky to have the verybest horse people, most of whom have been with me fromthe start. “We start driving them straight away in long reins whenthey arrive from the sales. John Crosse does a lot of theearly breaking with me and John Halligan backs all thehorses and makes them very relaxed and easy to ride. Wekeep the work varied and the horses happy; we never putthem under any pressure.”Each of the two-year-olds are also taken to different

“They enjoy coming out and it is a good experiencegetting boxed up and transported to different places tosee things. They have it all done then for the new ownersand trainers, who in effect are buying experiencedhorses.”The majority of the stock on the farm are purchased as

yearlings, sourced from auctions around the world, including England, Ireland, France, Spain, Italy, andGermany. Con and Theresa also have a couple ofbroodmares and he said: “We breed from a few youngmares every year.”Asked what he looks for in a horse and if he has a type,

Marnane said: “The sire is very important. I go for speedtypes if I can. They need to be athletic and fairly correctand walk well for the sales.”Mentioning other stallions that he likes at present, he

said: “I have a number by Myboycharlie this year; he is asire that I like and they were too expensive before, but Imanaged to get some last year. We have, among others, horses by Kodiac, Acclamation, Exceed And Excel,Dutch Art, Showcasing and Invincible Spirit. BRITISH AND IRISH MAIDENS

JOHNSTON JUVENILES OFF TO A FLYER

The 2015 turf flat season spluttered into life as usual, onlyto shut down again pretty much, but it will give time toMark Johnston to enjoy winning all the juvenile events onSaturday. Ravenhoe (Bahamian Bounty) may have wonthe Brocklesby by only a short-head but his grit shouldsee him win again, and both Rah Rah (Lonhro), a winnerby over three lengths at Kempton, and Buratino (Exceed

And Excel), who performed the same feat at therenovated Great Leighs, now Chelmsford (where most ofthe old course on Galleywood Common still exists), seemabove average and should make their mark at a higherlevel if they can transfer their form to the turf. There was a feeling that the EBF maiden that opens the

season at the Curragh was not necessarily the hot contestit can sometimes be, but State Of Emergency (DandyMan) deserves plenty of credit for battling to success in arough contest on heavy ground. An entry in the ListedMarble Hill Stakes looks realistic, especially as he shouldcome on plenty for better ground.Three-year-old The Warrior (Exceed And Excel) looked

flattered by his rating of 106 for finishing last in the Gr.1Middle Park Stakes, but he went some way to defying thedoubters by winning a six-furlong maiden at the Curraghin good style from his main rival, looking better the furtherhe went. A Classic trial presumably beckons.

Hail The Hero (Galileo) was only just beaten by asubsequent Gr.1 winner on his second start for AidanO’Brien, though he disappointed on his third and last nextyear and was subsequently sold into David O’Meara’syard. He had done well enough over the winter to win thefirst division of a maiden over seven at Doncaster on softground on Sunday. He went into the race with a rating of87, which he should leave behind, though he obviouslyhas a way to go to take a hand in the Gr.1 2,000 Guineas,in which he holds an entry. It was perhaps the closenessof the battle for the second division that helped Mulaaseq(Showcasing) post a faster time, but more should beheard of him, as he was still green and should improve agood deal.

continued from page 5

One to Watch

The ground had become very testing at the Curragh onSunday by the time Ashraf (Cape Cross) saunteredaway with the finale, an EBF maiden over a mile, butDermot Weld’s chance looked better than just a sloggerand he is likely to head to the Gr.3 Ballysax Stakes overanother two furlongs with every chance, though twooutsiders being closest to him here makes the form onpaper not the strongest. He was a bit boyish in the stallsand a bit fresh, but he looked very straight forward in therace and should settle down fine now that he has run.
