Involvement of elected officials in the Cigeo project

1991: parliament passes the Act of 30 December pertaining to radioactive waste management research 1993: October/November: the Haute-Marne and Meuse Departmental

Councils approve the official candidacy of their department for hosting the Underground Laboratory

1997: Vote in the Municipal Councils in the area 10 km around the Bure laboratory (30 votes for the project, 3 against) and the Meuse and Haute-Marne Departmental Councils 2005: First public debate

2006: parliament passes the Planning Act of 28 June adopting deep geological disposal as the long-term reference solution for high and intermediate level waste 2009: Following consultation with local elected officials, proposal of a 30 km2

zone called the ZIRA (zone of interest for detailed reconnaissance) to host the underground facilities 2013: Second public debate

2016: parliament passes the Act of 25 July specifying how Cigeo is to proceed
