ContentsWelcome to the latest Step Out guide, packed full of good ideas to get you and your family out exploring the city’s parks and open spaces. As in previous issues there is something for everyone, access is good with the added bonus that many of our facilities and activities are free for you to enjoy.

We have a dedicated team of staff who work extremely hard to ensure your day out is an enjoyable one, whether you choose one of our many parks - Coombe Country Park, War Memorial Park, Allesley, Longford, Holbrooks, Caludon Castle, or the many other smaller parks local to where you live. You can also visit our brand new Broadgate square in the city centre which will provide a dynamic and exciting outdoor event venue.

Building on past success, a fourth Coventry park, Caludon Castle, has been awarded the national Green Flag Award. These awards illustrate the excellent partnership working between the City Council, Ward councillors and residents, and recognises the high standards and presentation of the park. As ever, their help and support is much appreciated.

2012 is a special year for the city and it’s extra special for the parks service with the Olympic Torch Relay arriving in the War Memorial Park on Sunday 1 July, so don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of London 2012!

2012 is the year that brings the Olympic Games to our city. As we take our place on the world stage for the greatest show on Earth, we want Coventry residents and visitors alike to join the celebrations.

Over the coming months, Coventry will host Olympic Football at the City of Coventry Stadium along with the final Men’s Qualifying Play-off match on 23 April. Our premier park, War Memorial Park, plays host to the Olympic Torch Relay on 1 July. Make sure you come and play your part in welcoming the event to the city, and look out for the Paralympic Flame Celebration the city is also proud to be hosting here in August.

The Live Site screen at the Coventry Transport Museum will entertain visitors to the city and our famous Cathedral marks its golden jubilee.

Coventry’s famous Lady Godiva will come to life as Imagineer Productions bring us Godiva Awakes. On 28 July, Godiva will awake to a spectacular performance in the city centre, before – powered by cyclists – she journeys to London to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Alongside many national and international events taking place here, many local communities will also be celebrating with a series of community events including street parties, community walks and music.

Monday 11 to Sunday 17 JuneFree Radio presents the Walk of WarwickshireJD from the Free Radio Coventry and Warwickshire breakfast show starts out on his massive 100 miles walk around Coventry and Warwickshire to raise money for the Heritage Snowball Appeal and he would like you to help him. Walk the last leg of JD’s journey with him from Warwick Racecourse to Coventry city centre. It’s only 12 miles on Sunday 17 June and help raise money for this fantastic charity. Visitor CentreThe new Visitor Centre is now open and will be the home of the Missing Faces exhibition dedicated to those lost during the First World War. The centre includes the new golf reception, the new Education Room available for hire to community groups and clubs, new league football changing rooms and the new café area. Outside the Visitor Centre there is a new performance space for bands and theatre groups and also to enable café customers to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine.

Friends of the War Memorial ParkThe Friends of the War Memorial Park are an active group of people protecting the park for future generations to enjoy. The Friends have a number of interest groups ranging from children’s facilities to the parks history, landscaping and ecology of the park. New members are always welcome and there are some exciting projects planned. Education programmesAs part of the Heritage Lottery and Big Lottery Funding Parks for People project, new education programmes and resource packs about Remembrance, animal adaptations, first nature and Orienteering have been developed. These cover all key stages linked to the National Curriculum. We are now looking for local schools to be involved in the development and trial of the new programmes. Parks for People ProjectThe majority of the capital works is now complete but there are some planting works to take place throughout the winter and volunteers are always welcome to assist with these, see page 30. Buggy WorkoutsThe Buggy workout is a fitness class for new Mums wanting to get back in shape after their new arrival. It’s a fun and enjoyable post natal outdoor class. The outdoor circuit is a mix of power walking and toning exercises to improve the posture and strengthens the core muscles. It is also a great opportunity to meet other mums and you don’t have to worry about crèche as you can bring baby with you in the buggy! Six week courses are being run from different venues around Coventry. There may be a slight charge.

War Memorial Park Community Tennis Club caters for all ages and abilities who want to play tennis in a friendly and social atmosphere. In 2011, a £225,000 investment was made to refurbish the tennis courts and install floodlights and now provides a fantastic venue to play tennis. The centre recently attained Beacon Status by the Lawn Tennis Association and was Clubmark accredited.

Annual memberships ONLY cost £35 per person which includes free court use 7 days a week, a free coaching session and free entry to an annual competition for members.

The new Community Tennis Club is a partnership between Coventry City Council, Inspire 2 Coach and Warwickshire Lawn Tennis Association to encourage more people to play tennis on the park courts.

Inspire2coach provide all the tennis services in the park, and have appointed James Asbridge as Head Coach, he is a local, experienced Level 4 coach. Come down to meet James and the rest of the coaches to learn more about this exciting opportunity on one of our open days see page 12 for details.
