It’s time tofill in yourtax returnCompleting your individual tax returncanbecumbersomeandoverwhelming, especially if you are uninformed aboutthe basics.“The important part of completing a

tax return is to know exactly what youare allowed to claim as a deduction andthen to understand how you shouldclaim that deduction,” says Yolandi Es-terhuizen, LegislationManager at SageVIP.Esterhuizen provides the following

information as key to remember whencompleting your individual tax return:Tax return logisticsThe filing season commenced on 1 Ju-

ly 2013 and the deadline formanual sub-missions is 27 September 2013 and forelectronic submissions 22 November2013.Provisional taxpayers submitting

electronically should submit on or be-fore 31 January 2014.

) Forwhich period is the tax return?Income earned between 1 March 2012and 28 February 2013.

) Who should submit? No tax returnneeds to be submitted if the remunera-tionwas earned fromone employer andit did not exceed R250 000. However, ifyou earned any other form of incomeor you need to claim deductions suchas travel expenses, a return must becompleted. You can complete the questionnaire

on the SARS website at:www.sars.gov.za. This will help you todetermine if you need to submit a re-turn.

) Where do I start? With eFiling, youcan easily complete it yourself. Guidesare available on the SARSwebsite to as-sist taxpayers with the process. Alter-natively you can contact a registeredtax consultant.

) Submit your return on time: Toavoid any penalties or imprisonment, make sure to submit on time. Do notwait until the last submission day. Pen-alties will be charged if you do not sub-mit on time. These amounts are calcu-lated on a sliding scale, depending onthe taxpayer’s taxable income.Thepen-alties can range between R250 andR16 000.Formore informationonall taxmatters, you canvisit theSARSwebsiteat www.sars.gov.za.

Common mistakes women make with moneyAugust is National Woman’smonth, and taking control of yourfinances is thebestwaytocelebratebeing a woman.

“Woman need to take responsibilityand be financially smart with their fi-nances,” says Eunice Sibiya, head ofConsumer Education at FNB.“Women sometimes don’t have the

confidenceorthinktheydon’thavetheknowledgetobeinvolvedwiththefam-ily finances. This is a bigmistake. Youneed to get involved, understandwhatdebt as well as which policies, insur-ance and savings your family has.”It is also a good idea to understand

what has been put in your name, be

it the house or the car. This will giveyou far more control over and under-standingofwhat ishappeningwith theincome that is coming in.“One important aspect is savings;

you should never rely on someone elseto provide for you later in life. If youare single, start a savings plan as soonas possible, and if you have a partner, understand what savings you have asa family and what you can do to con-tribute.”Don’t feel pressurised to spendWomen are a soft target for impulse

and emotional buying. Before buyinganything, take the time and ask your-self: Do I really need it and why do Iwant it?There isnoneedtospendmon-

ey on yourself every month, maybetreat yourself once every couple ofmonths.Put yourself first“Whether it is your children or your

family, womentendtoputotherpeoplefirst and their finances suffer as a con-sequence. Remember that childrendon’t understand the value of money, unless you are disciplined and teachthem.”The same goes to lending money to

family and friends, rather send themto a financial planner or help them setup a budget and financial goals.Understand your household

spendingStudies show that in sub-Saharan

Africa women’s earnings are morelikely to be spent on basic needs forfamily survival.Menweremore likelyto spend their earnings on alcohol, to-bacco, a music system and other per-sonal items.“Along with your family, find out

what you as a family are spending andthendrawupabudget.Youwill be sur-prised to see how small purchases canadd up andwhere, as a family, you cansave. It is also important to note whatyouarespendingongroceriesandfoodfor the family. Budgeting as a familywill certainly help you realise your fi-nancial goals easier since therewill bea collective effort from all the familymembers.”Eunice Sibiya
