Leave for Extended Family Travel The NSW Education Act 1990 demands compulsory school attendance for young people at school between the ages of 6 and 17 years. This means your daughter should be at school each and every gazetted school day. It is a government requirement of which the College is mindful. I often receive emails and letters informing the College that a student will be taking leave for a family occasion or a holiday. We always encourage families to use the generous holiday periods that are already in place, however, I realise this is not always possible. The College has some clear guidelines as to how requests for leave are dealt with: Firstly, the request must be directed for the attention of the Principal. It is not College policy for seniors to be granted leave as we know that it always has an effect on the student’s ability to maintain their pattern of study and has the potential to affect assessment performance. It is an expectation that students will complete all required assessments or complete any modified tasks required by the class teacher to assess their progress. Stella Maris is not a distance education provider, so we ask that students arrange a buddy to ensure that they keep up with work set. Staff may use our LMS, Moodle, to assist students but it is up to the student to manage the work that is missed.

...From the Principal continued

Elizabeth Carnegie, Principal

I bring this to your attention as there are a significant number of families who are requesting leave as we draw to the end of Term 2. I would ask that families are mindful of the impact of leave from school on the learning paths for your daughters and the additional anxiety that it can produce for the girls upon their return to the College.

Trivia Night Just a reminder that the P&F have decided that there will be one main fundraiser for the year – the Trivia Night. All parents/carers are invited to come along, meet new friends and play along, sharing your knowledge of trivia with others. The theme is sports so dress as a team or player and raise money for P&F initiatives.

Last year the College Executive made a decision (based on our review of risk assessments), that no alcohol would be served at events to which young people or children are invited. So, this year, you may have noticed that there was no alcohol at the Welcome Dinner and last year’s Bodies of Work Night served non-alcoholic champagne, so everyone could toast the great work of the students! I hope you understand that this decision was made in the best interests of your daughters and to maintain a safe working environment for staff. As a result, however, it means that students are not able to attend the Trivia Night, as it is an event that permits alcohol to be brought by participants.

Debating Good Luck to our Years 10 and 11 debating teams who are competing in the Cathloic Schools Debating Association finals this evening. The finals are held at Waverley and Newington.

13 Reasons WhyThe second season of the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why is currently airing on Netflix. This controversial series raised serious concerns amongst parents, teachers and mental health workers alike when it aired last year. Many adolescent mental health services reported a significant increase in suicidal ideation and behaviour last year, reporting this was directly linked to the series.

Unfortunately with smartphones, widespread wifi access and peer influence, young people will have access to this series (and other potentially distressing content) regardless of parental diligence. While there is no need to panic, it is important that adults are aware of the content of programs such as this. Below is a link to the most recent information from headspace for both parents and young people. Of course, if you do have any concerns about this or any other aspect of your daughters emotional wellbeing, please do not hesitate to contact me. https://headspace.org.au/news/the-launch-of-13-reasons-why-season-2/

Image Based Abuse The Office of the eSafety Commissioner now delivers a service to the whole community in the removal of inappropriate images from the web. They have agreements with many large social media entities such as Facebook. If you or your daughter is dealing with an issue around another party sharing or posting an image without your consent please visit - https://www.esafety.gov.au/image-based-abuse/action to take action.

If you would like support in this area please do not hesitate to make contact with your Head of Year, Kylie or the Deputy Principal, Sarah Carter.

Inclusive LearningInclusive LearningThe da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of high potential learners. Hundreds of teams from across the Sydney, Canberra and Central Coast areas compete in teams of eight across ten disciplines including engineering, mathematics and chess, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography and general knowledge.

At Stella Maris, all students in Year 7 are invited to apply for selection. Students from Year 8 to Year 11 are selected using a variety of criteria including ability, performance and teacher nomination. The selected girls are asked to attend weekly lunchtime training sessions to develop teamwork and gain experience in collaborative problem solving. Each year the tasks focus on a particular theme and this year the theme was ‘The Unexpected’. What was not unexpected, was the high representation of all-girls teams achieving top places in the da Vinci competition.

Those that have been lucky enough to have participated know of the intensity, enthusiasm and excitement of the da Vinci experience. Hopefully, this link will enable them to share the experience with you in a small way. https://youtu.be/0mlhif6X-6w

SportSPORT REPORTBBSSSA Soccer

Congratulations to the Stella U13 and Open Soccer teams who played at the BBSSSA gala days this week.

The U13 team played on Monday, 21 May at Melwood Soccer fields. They won nearly all of their pool games, making it through to the semi final against Mercy. It was a tough game against a much bigger team from Mercy. Stella was unlucky to lose 2 – 0 against Mercy, who went on to win the grand final.

The Open team played on Tuesday, 22 May at Cromer Park. Stella was in a very tough pool and played some fantastic soccer. Although they only lost one game, they just missed out on progressing through to the semis. A special mention to Isabella Stein, Year 9, who was selected into the BBSSSA Soccer Team. She will now go on to play at the NSWCCC Championships in June. Well done Issy!

Well done to all the students in both teams:

Under 13: Allegra, Ruby, Molly, Bella, Georgiana, Neive, Brooke, Maddy, Jamie, Emily, Isabella, Ruby, Hannah, Felicity, Georgie and Holly.

Open team: Molly, Lucy, Alana, Kirra, Rosie, Annabel, Charlie, April, Grace, Sofia, Ella, Zoe, Isabella, Issy, Jasmine, Sophie and Sophie.
