This may be done prior to the child’s birth. MARRIAGE We are unable to accommodate all of the requests for weddings at Stella Maris. To marry here, at least one party to the marriage should be an active parishioner, regularly attending Mass for one year before asking to schedule a wedding. As Catholics, we believe that God has a plan for marriage. Cohabitation before marriage is not part of God’s plan and decreases the chances of success in maintaining a permanent union. Cohabitating couples should separate and live apart before requesting the Sacrament of Matrimony. More information is available from the parish office regarding guidelines for weddings and parishioner status. Diocesan policy requires at least six months’ notice before setting a wedding date. SACRAMENTAL POLICY In order to receive First Holy Communion or Confirmation, students in Grades 2 and 8 must attend TWO FULL YEARS of religious instructions if they are NOT in our Catholic School system. No more than THREE (3) classes can be missed during the year of sacramental preparation. The facilities and services of Stella Maris Parish are available to its active members. This includes use of the Church for Baptisms, Weddings, and other sacramental events and includes parishioner status in our parochial schools. Active membership is determined by three things: being registered in the parish for a sufficient period of time, faithful attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days, and the use of the envelope system in support of the parish. N.B. If you are attending Stella Maris but not receiving envelopes, then you are not registered. Please call the Parish Office for registration information. 16 TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME July 22, 2018 PLEASE PRAY FOR ALL THE SICK IN OUR PARISH If anyone wishes to receive Communion and is unable to come to Mass, call Jason Vaughan at 843-883-3044. Saint Mary Magdalene (d.c. 63) Saint of the Day for July 22nd

Patron Saint of Penitents & Perfumers

Saint Mary Magdalene’s Story

Except for the mother of Jesus, few women are more honored in the Bible than Mary Magdalene. Yet she could well be the patron of the slandered, since there has been a persistent legend in the Church that she is the unnamed sinful woman who anointed the feet of Jesus in Luke 7:36-50.

Most Scripture scholars today point out that there is no scriptural basis for confusing the two women. Mary Magdalene, that is, “of Magdala,” was the one from whom Christ cast out “seven demons” (Luke 8:2) - an indication at the worst, of extreme demonic possession or possibly, severe illness.

Writing in the New Catholic Commentary, Father Wilfrid J. Harrington, O.P., says that “seven demons” “does not mean that Mary had lived an immoral life - a conclusion reached only by means of a mistaken identification with the anonymous woman of Luke 7:36.” In the Jerome Biblical Commentary, Father Edward Mally, S.J., agrees that she “is not…the same as the sinner of Luke 7:37, despite the later Western romantic tradition about her.” Mary Magdalene was one of the many “who were assisting them [Jesus and the Twelve] out of their means.” She was one of those who stood by the Cross of Jesus with his Mother. And, of all the “official” witnesses who might have been chosen for the first awareness of the Resurrection, she was the one to whom that privilege was given. She is known as the “Apostle to the Apostles.”

Reflection

Mary Magdalene has been a victim of mistaken identity for almost 20 centuries. Yet she would no doubt insist that it makes no difference. We are all sinners in need of the saving power of God, whether our sins have been lurid or not. More importantly, we are all “unofficial” witnesses of the Resurrection.

NEWS FROM OTHER SOURCES

THE FOURTH MONTH- TODAY TO JULY 25 TH

Mary now takes her place in society as an expectant mother. At four months old, Jesus’s organs are functioning and his heart is pumping 6 ½ gallons of blood each day. He is approximately 6ʺ in length, fine hair covers his body, eyelashes and brows are showing as well as fingerprints, unique to him, which will remain the same all his life. He is comforted by listening to the sound of his mother’s heartbeat. Sadly, 160,000 abortions per year take place after the fourth month. Let us pray for expectant mothers that they will find support to make the gift of life possible.

HUMANÆ VITÆ 50th Anniversary of Humanæ Vitæ

July 25th marks the 50th anniversary of the papal encyclical, Humanæ Vitæ (HV) written by Blessed Pope Paul VI in 1968, which provides beautiful and clear teaching about God’s plan for married love and the transmission of life. Look for copies of the anniversary edition of this timeless document soon to be available to our parishioners. In commemoration of HV and in celebration of Pope Paul VI’s restatement of what the Catholic Church has taught for over 2,000 years, please join the USCCB and pray the following prayer:

God our Father, fill all married couples with your love. Give them the grace to love one another every day, living out their vow to love in good times and bad. Help them to imitate your freely given, sacrificial love, that they may choose each day to give of themselves, reflecting your love for us when you sent your Son to die for our sins. We ask this through the intercession of Blessed Pope Paul VI, and in the name of Christ our Lord. Amen
