The Mediterranean DietYou may have heard of the Mediterranean Diet, but do you know what it involves and the benefits it can provide?

The Mediterranean diet has long been regarded as a sustainable and healthy lifestyle. Originally stemming from the area bordering the Mediterranean Sea, with concentrations on how those in olive-growing areas of Greece, Crete and southern Italy ate in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. The traditional Mediterranean diet is high in monounsaturated fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre, with an average overall fat content of 30%. Many studies have found that adherence to a Mediterranean diet is associated with reduced risk of several chronic diseases, including cancer, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

In summary, the Mediterranean diet concentrates on limiting the amount of meat consumed on a daily basis, lowering the consumption of dairy products and ensuring a heightened intake of vegetables, fruits, legumes and unprocessed grains. All of this is bound by olive oil – a typical main dish at dinner consists of vegetables, legumes and olive oil with fish as a source of protein. Olive oil is the principal source of dietary fat in the Mediterranean diet.

Following the Mediterranean diet is a simple and delicious way to follow a healthy lifestyle.

Employee Engagement Survey Update

As you are aware, we rolled out an employee engagement survey in November of 2018, for the purpose of measuring the level of engagement throughout the Company. We are pleased to report that we had a participation rate of 70%, with 1,115 surveys completed. The next step of the process was to communicate the results of the survey. Between the months of February and May, Kim Day (President and COO), Ruth Meagher (Director of HR), and Charlie Raymond or Steve Amand (VP’s of Operations) conducted site visits to each individual location to share the results of the survey with the management team at each dealership, and conducted town-hall meetings with all staff at the dealerships to communicate the purpose for the site visits. Following these town hall meetings, the corporate team circulated throughout the dealerships, gathering feedback and suggestions from employees on the survey process, and in general, their thoughts on the level of engagement in the dealership and throughout the company. The site visits were informative, and a great opportunity for these corporate leaders to

connect face to face with the staff. The value of the conversations that result from these site visits are a key component of the Employee Engagement process.

What happens next? Next steps will involve the management at each dealership determining what initiatives they will be rolling out within their stores in the form of an action plan, in response to the information gathered in the survey for their respective dealership. From a corporate perspective, the survey results for Steele Auto overall will be used to determine what initiatives will be rolled out across the group for the remainder of 2019 and into 2020 in response the comments/suggestions/recommendations that came from the survey.

We want to take this opportunity to say “Thank you” to each employee who completed the survey last November; also, to those who took the time to participate in the town hall meetings and follow up conversations with the leadership team at each dealership. At Steele Auto Group we value our employees and their feedback. This survey is a confidential way for employees to tell us how they feel, and we commit to using this information to take action(s) toward improving our workplaces, processes, and business practices.

Stay tuned over the coming months for more communication regarding the Company’s plan on follow up initiatives that will be rolled out, as we continue to strive to be the Employer of Choice in our markets.

Innovation Award Announcement Steele Chevrolet is the 2019 Innovation Award Winner for Canada

Massive Congratulations to the entire Team at Steele Chevrolet. In my over twenty-year career in the Automotive Industry I have been fortunate to work with a lot of great people and have been lucky to be part of several awards and accolades over the many years. This by far is the biggest, most meaningful Award that I have the great fortune to be involved with in my entire career to date.

I strongly feel the General Motors of Canada Innovation Award highlights who Steele Chevrolet is. We are innovators, embracers of change, disruptors in our industry and leaders not followers.

It started several years ago. Chris Beaton attended a Digital Conference in Toronto and came back to the store with an idea, “a spark”. Using Video as a communication tool, pull back the veil and create a more transparent way of doing business. We took that “spark” and integrated the third party Authnik Video Application to provide us a platform to communicate with our customers via video through text and email. Through a tremendous amount of work and effort, late nights and a lot of naysayers we created a Culture of doing business at Steele Chevrolet.

The “spark” turned into a full on “fire” as we worked with genius mind, Todd Thompson to take things to the next level. The Dealboxx was born and the “spark” was now a full on “fire”. With countless hours, meetings, thousands of discussions (literally thousands!) our own inhouse Video Application, Dealboxx was running full stream and changing daily. After honing the process with over 60,000 personal video communications in 2018 the “fire” was about to turn into a full on “Raging Forest Fire”.

Todd Thompson, Mike Walters, and Jason Monk sitting in my office (I’ll never forget) “We are taking this to the next level and not everyone may survive!” The next evolution of Chris Beaton’s original “spark” was now a “Raging Forest Fire”. Remove the veil and provide full transparency to each Service Customer. To say the results have been great is an understatement. The results have been EXTRAODINARY!!!!! Technician productivity the highest ever, Customer Satisfaction Scores the highest ever, increased sales that have pushed us to the top in all of Canada!

Not one minute of this unbelievable success came easy, not one single second! We continue to improve, change and adapt. To say that I am excited for what the future is going to bring is an understatement.

This success is a culmination of every single member in the Steele Chevrolet Team. I want to make sure to highlight some very special people that made this happen.

This whole thing may not have ever started without Chris Beaton’s initial and continued vision and determination throughout the years making this happen. Countless hours, discussions, late night texts!!! It’s still growing and evolving. No doubt why you’ve been able to lead the team as the #1 GM Dealer and recognized by the highest levels of Leadership within General Motors and the entire industry.

Todd Thompson’s genius and programming abilities to make the Dealboxx a successful, proven and harden tool. Todd you are incredible with what you do and the “Raging Forest Fire” may never have come to fruition without your countless hours of work and determination on this project.

Mike Walters and Jason Monk for taking the flag and running with it… and running hard. The Service application results under both of your Leadership have been nothing short of Fantastic. It continues to evolve and improve every day. The future is brighter than the sun!

We are continuing to expand with applications into Finance and BDC operations with the Video Application, Dealboxx.

I want to personally thank everyone and congratulate everyone of this very special achievement. Job well done!!!!!! We will continue to be Industry Leaders and Disruptors in the Market.

Spread the word!!!!!

Herm’s Home Hacks

Helpful Home tipsPVC Curling Iron Holsters

Hate the messy look of curling irons lying on the vanity or the toilet tank? Here’s a tip for you. Use hook-and-loop tape to attach 5-in. lengths of 2”PVC pipe to the vanity door to hold the curling irons. Do the same thing with 3-in. pieces of 1-1/2-in.-

diameter pipe to hold the cords. Just measure your curling irons to see how long your “holsters” need to be. Let your curling irons cool before you stow them away.

Overhead Storage in the Garage

Bulky items can be stored overhead by cementing together a simple rack from 2” PVC pipes and fittings. Bolt the straight pipe to the ceiling joists to support heavy loads and screw the angled pieces from the ‘wye’ connectors into the cross brace to

stabilize the whole rack. The PVC’s smooth surface makes for easy loading and unloading.

Chair Closet

No storage space? No problem!

Hang some chairs on the wall to create a make-shift closet.

PVC Leaf Blower

Attach a PVC pipe to your lawn blower so you can clean out your gutter with your feet planted on the ground.

Ice Cubes & Carpet

If you want to get rid of smushed down carpet after moving furniture all you need is ice cubes.

Place ice cubes in the carpet dents and wait for it to melt, absorb the moisture with a dish towel and your carpet should be back to normal.

Keep Your Ice Cream Soft

I scream you scream we all scream for ice cream. Store ice cream in a zip lock freezer bag to keep it soft. No need to bend your spoon!

SKILLS CANADA NATIONAL COMPETITION

Our very own Jared Roach in action at the National Competition

Steele Auto was very happy to team up with Skills Canada Nova Scotia as a Silver Sponsor for the three (3) Automotive Contest areas, Automotive Service Technology, Car Painting and Auto Body Repair for this year’s competition. This event is such a great fit for us it was a no brainer getting involved.

In the Autobody Repair category we had three Steele employees’ in the top three positions, and Gold medal winner Jared Roach went on to compete in the National Skills competition, a great testament to the talent we have. Jared was not on the podium at the National Level but represented Nova Scotia and Steele Auto with incredible work and we are so proud of you Jared! Thanks to all the contestants that competed and a big congratulations to them all, the level of talent that these competitors have is impressive indeed.

This year the competition space sold out for the Skills Canada National Competition (the next level for all gold winners in their provincial competitions) hosted here in Halifax. Approximately 7,500 people visited the 25th Skills Canada National Competition at the Halifax Exhibition Centre. Medals were awarded to the top competitors in 44 Skill Areas representing six skilled trade and technology sectors, including: transportation, construction, manufacturing and engineering, information technology, service and employment. The goal and objective of the SCNC is to engage Canadian youth and promote all the

exciting careers that are available to them in the skilled trades and technologies. It is the only national multi-trade and technology event of its kind for young students and apprentices in the country. “Events like this provide a platform for competitors to demonstrate and develop their skills to be more prepared for the world of work. It also gives young Canadians who have never been exposed to Skilled Trades and Technology careers a chance to learn about these occupations through experiential activities”, said Shaun Thorson, Chief Executive Officer, Skills/Compétences Canada.

I personally was fortunate enough to be able to attend the award ceremonies for both the Nova Scotia and the National competitions and the work that goes into making this event a success was remarkable. What a wonderful way for the skilled trades to exhibit their talent. And to put a plug in for the women who are getting into trades in a big way the top three National winners in the car painting category were all female, well done ladies.

Thank you to Graham Owen, General Manager of our Collision Centers for his dedication, commitment and attendance at these events and his ongoing encouragement to his team that were competing.

How to keep your passwords secure and simple

No one likes juggling passwords. We all have so many accounts and services that we subscribe to, and each requires a password. Additionally, we should have a separate password for each one. Throw in password expiries and complex symbols and numbers and you have a recipe for disaster.

People reuse passwords, people write their passwords down. It’s a reality that we need to try and avoid in order to keep our accounts secure.

Thankfully, the tech industry has come around to the logic that complex, expiring passwords do NOT make an account secure.

Instead, try using a more simple, long passphrase. Here’s an example:

Goingtofrancewasmyfavoritetrip1 is an extremely secure password. And, for the creator of the passphrase, easy to remember and type quickly.

• Length is the ultimate factor in password strength

• Write a sentence out that’s easy for YOU to remember

• Capitalize a letter and add a number just to make sure it’s accepted by every app or service

• Do your best to use different passwords for each service, then if one is breached, you don’t have all your accounts compromised.

Automotive Service is Such a Vital RoleWho Are Our Service People & Technicians?

Team L-R: Curtis Elsinga, Alicia Bulitka, Graham Jones, Nick Bradley, Santieo Downey, Jonathan Carter, David Tops, Dan Tramble, Michelle Purdy, Richard Barkhouse, Keith Whittaker, Corey Mosher, Alex Preshyon, Scott Demone, Sam Shannon, Scott Martin, Jamie-Rae Bowie, Ryan Drake, Service Manager, Rob Murray (not in day of visit so I cropped him in at the top of the pic)

What does it take to run a great Service department? It takes a small village that often to the public eye goes unnoticed, but not by us here at Steele Auto. All our dealerships have some amazing unsung hero’s who work tirelessly to keep us safely on the road. Their role is an integral part of our business and when I had the opportunity to go visit our Steele Volkswagen dealership on Windmill Road in Dartmouth I decided to make it a learning experience and thought it should be an ongoing newsletter piece with each of the dealerships service departments getting a visit from me and included in the newsletter going forward .

I had a great time meeting the team and was impressed at the comradery that they have with one another. The most surprising was that most of the technicians were quite shy, not wanting to be in the spotlight, I did however get them to all get together for a photo and I thanked them kindly for it (there was only minimal grumbling lol). And one technician who asked to remain anonymous when asked about how he became a technician responded: “I began working on cars when I was fourteen years old. I enjoyed it as a hobby, and it grew into a career choice. When I finished high school, I enrolled in the local mechanics course and became a licensed mechanic in 2005. I worked at several different shops and settled here at Steele VW and have been here for 12 years. One of the many things that keeps me here are the competitive wages which is important to support my family “. Thank you for sharing with us!

The smooth operation of a Service Department requires tremendous communication and team work from the Service Advisors, Warranty Administrators, the hands on Technicians who also help train our apprentices along their way as well as stay current with all the new

technology, Shuttle Drivers, Parts Drivers, Parts Co-Ordinator’s, Parts Manager, Lot attendants, and the Service Manage all play their part in ensuring a well-run department. Phew! Amazing.

(Pictures colored by the technicians for Jamie, Warranty Admin that she keeps at her desk, Amazing, some of that great team comradery I mentioned)

The timing of my visit to this great group coincided with us having two Memorial Cup tickets to give away. Any of the service team that were interested put their name in for a draw and the winner was Curtis Elsinga, Service Technician. Congratulations Curtis I hope you enjoyed the game.

Thank you to all the staff at Steele Volkswagen Service Department for welcoming me into your workspace and the exceptional service received on my mother-in-law’s car; she and I both appreciate it.

Dr. DanVW Technician, Hobbyist, Business Owner … Say hello to Dan!

Hi everyone, Dan Tramble from Steele VW Dartmouth here, originally from Monastery Nova Scotia. I moved

to Dartmouth in 1985 and I discovered a love for electric guitars. I played piano as a child and wanted something different so I could attract new friends. “Volume and attention” being my desire, Electric guitars it was. I took my parents tube record player and modified it for electric guitar. It was my very first rig! I discovered early on that the sounds sound best through vacuum tubes! All analog!

I started working with Volkswagen in 1995 at and always had a part-time band on the go. Throughout the years I continued with my hobby however when my children were younger I didn’t have the time to apply to it.

In 2013 I took my hobby to the next level. I built my very first amplifier from complete scratch and it sounded really good. At the time I realized I may have a problem because I have an addictive personality and I decided I would have to manufacture them in small numbers and sell them across the Internet to keep my hobby going. I sold 137 units in 4 years and have them in 4 European countries, 19 states and 8 provinces! In 2015 I obtained a business number and registered as Dr. Dan. In 2016 I was fortunate enough to meet a gentleman at one of the best recording studios in Canada and we became great friends. That recording studio purchased three of my amplifiers, and the professional artists began to see my work. I am fortunate to work with Barry Stock of Three Day’s Grace; Barry has 3 #1 Billboard singles using one of my amps! I also work with Bryan Adams Band and Keith Scott who have a couple of my designs. It was cool to sit in the bleachers in Halifax and hear my creation come to life playing all those famous hits! I work with several other professional musicians across Canada.

This year I have designed 4 of my own circuits. They will all be named after areas of Dartmouth which I greatly love, I am very proud of the fact that I am from here and if any of you follow me online can see my designs 1) Crichton Park 2) Brightwood 3) Woodland and 4) Alderney designs will be released this year.

I am very thankful to have a loving family that puts up with me because I do things to the extreme and I am very involved in both of my jobs. At some point I plan to go to California to the NAMM Show, one of the biggest guitar shows around and will unveil some of my inventions there and see if I can possibly grow in that area. Like everything it’s all a work in progress and a lot of fun.

It is very rewarding to give someone the attention in service, giving

them a customized product and after sales support. If I ever succeed at this business, I won’t become more than a two-person operation, for me I love the one on one with my customers and my customers love that as well. I love having this hobby turned business!

Steele GMC Buick Fredericton Spring Extravaganza

L-R: Kirt MacDonald, Aubrey Ward, Albert Savoie, Chris Steeves, Dave MacDonald, Robbie Curran, Shannon Mills, Gisele Heins, Taylor Barrett, Josh McIntyre

The smiles on the faces of the young Easter egg hunters were matched only by those of their parents, as the Steele GMC Buick Fredericton showroom boomed with families celebrating the dealership’s second annual Spring Extravaganza. An afternoon full of treats, live music, monster truck rides and a bunny petting-zoo, the Steele GMC Buick team was proud to host such a joy-filled event

for their community, sharing laughs, as well as memories, with those that helped build the brand into what it is today. The Spring Extravaganza was such a success that even the Easter Bunny himself had decided to bounce by for a very special visit! A full photo album of the event was provided on the dealership’s Facebook page, giving parents

the ability to hold-on to their precious photos, while also providing those unable to attend the chance to feel as though they were there themselves. The Steele GMC Buick team can’t wait for next year’s Spring Extravaganza, which is sure to be hopping with even more activity!

The Genesis Team are also happy to set up test drive appointments, where they will bring a vehicle to you. Come by and take a look!

The service does not end at the sale. Heart of a ChampionHeart of a Champion is a group dedicated to preserving Atlantic Canada Racing Heritage. On May 18th this group posted the following on Facebook:

“Today’s Heart of a Champion ‘Saturday Salute’ is Nova Scotia restoration craftsman, Mike Herman! Mike has dedicated his life to motorsports and his passion is anything fast on either two or four wheels! Mike is quite possibly the most likeable person you’d ever have the privilege of meeting at any Maritime motorsports event, whether it was at a drag race, stocks, bike show or car show! Mike’s passion for cars and bikes started at a very young age and he’s built some ‘beauties’ over the years! From bikes to muscle cars to dragsters, Mike’s patience for perfection is easily evident in all of his creations! A friend to everyone, Mike’s ability to connect with

people is admirable and he’s always willing to help! :) Mike, you are a true gentleman and we are fortunate to have you ingrained in the Maritime Motorsports fabric. Things are booming in the Deep South...South Shore that is

South Shore Chevrolet Buick GMC, Liverpool is hopping. Its been a little over six months since I took the plunge and dove into the deep end of the province.

This month marks the 32nd anniversary of me entering the fast paced and exciting world of auto sales and I can honestly say I’ve never been so enthusiastic about a store as I am here in Liverpool. Mike Cannon, General Sales Manager advised me to treat this place like it’s my own, and with that advice we are on track to increase our sales by nearly 50% this year.

We have received great support from Kim Day, Steve Amand and Ruth Meagher, when they were here for a visit, having them here

made all of us realize that we are an important part of the Steele family. It was a great visit.

We have increased our inventory, put cars back in the showroom, made several physical changes to the building and recently added another employee to our sales staff. The most important thing we’ve done is made ourselves available to the community. Liverpool needs this store and if we are here for our town, the town will be here for us!

Rotary Club Gala RoyalThe Rotary Club of Hillsborough had their 40th annual fundraising dinner on May 24th at the Delta Prince Edward.

This was the first event we had the great pleasure and opportunity to support and attend since our acquisition of three dealerships on the Island, Experience Hyundai, Discover Kia and Subaru of Charlottetown.

Since its inception, the dinner has raised more than $3 million to support charitable organizations in P.E.I. and around the world. This event was originally called the Car Dinner and then changed to the Gala Royale which enabled them to make a great event even better, adding more value for ticket purchases and creating the best experience possible with exceptional prizes, all in support of very important, worthwhile charities.

Team Shout OutI felt it extremely important to acknowledge another major milestone achieved at Steele Chevrolet!

Last year I’d been pushing the team to achieve and to my knowledge this accomplishment has never been achieved before in the

Steele Auto Group’s history. Retailing over 100 Pre-Owned Vehicles in a single month.

Well the month of May turned out to be the first and I have no doubt won’t be the last. 106 Retail Used for the month of May!!!!!

Congratulations to Dave MacDougall, Pre-Owned Manager for managing the inventory and pushing the team along to a record setting month. This was a full team effort and an incredible amount of work and effort by the entire Sales Management Team, Chris, Mandy, Paul and their amazing team of Sales Professionals!

Big thanks as well to our up and coming Non-Prime Department!!!! Taylor & Matt you guys are killing it!

I also can’t forget about the video process…. Helps make the magic happen (keep it up Todd!)

This Grand Achievement would not have been possible without all Departments running on all cylinders to get those reconditions, photos, marketing, cleaning, etc., etc. done in time! Mike, Jason and Jim…. Keep it running!

Special shout out to Jess Topps…. Keeping us all organized throughout the recon process!

Thank you everyone and spread the word….. Steele Chevrolet’s future is brighter than ever!!!!!!! The best team EVER!!!!

Chefs for UNICEF Water for Life Gala

David Morley, President and CEO for UNICEF Canada forwarded a thank you to Steele Auto Group for our continued support for this fundraising event. Since 1990, over two BILLION people have gained access to safe drinking water, and almost two Billion people have gained access to improved sanitation facilities. Gains like these are possible by support from donors like us.

The number of deaths from water-related diseases around the world is staggering. Nearly 1,000 children a day die from these and almost 663 million still lack safe drinking water. One of the many reasons Kim Day, President & COO of Steele Auto has joined this organization as a member of their Patrons Council.

Steele Auto is incredibly proud to support such an important

initiative as this and be part of the UNICEF sustainable solutions initiatives being developed protecting future generations. We thank the local UNICEF team that puts on this incredibly delicious event and all of the Chefs and their teams that generously donate their time and prepare amazing food from around the world for us to try.
