Objectives

The course provides the fundamental statistical techniques that allow students to become familiar with quantitative methods that are most commonly used for management problems.

The course has an application-oriented approach, with special focus on interpretation of results.

Students will learn how to apply techniques to real data.

We will use Stata to analyze data and implement models

Contents

We study relationship between variables. You will learn how to answerquestions like…

What is the relationship between advertising expenditures and sales? Isthere a causal effect? Can we take into consideration time dynamics?

Can we predict a firm default by balance sheet ratios?

Contents

• Review of basic probability and statistics

• Comparing the means on two or more groups (two-sample tests and ANOVA)

• Understanding and measuring strength of the relations: simple, multiple and partial correlation

• Simple linear regression for modeling business variables

• Multiple regression for multivariate environments

• Introduction to panel data to model dynamics

• Logistic regression

• Introduction to data management and data analysis with Stata (graphical analyses, linear regression, logistic regression)

Contents – types of data

• Experimental data

• Observational data (cross-section)

• Panel data

Statistical software

• Stata is a statistical package particularly widespread in economics andmanagerial research areas.

• Stata offers a good combination of power and ease.

• Stata contemplates the possibility of using a large number of modelsand statistical procedures, and also provides the possibility ofdeveloping modules that others may install. So often additionalprograms with new Stata commands are available for free

• Advantages: widely used package in the faculty of economics andmanagement, very simple syntax for standard analysis, relatively lowcost

Requirements

No compulsory prerequisite.

Recommended prerequisites: basic knowledge of Statistics (probability, statistical inference, hypothesis testing) and fluency in English

Throughout the course, the following topics are assumed to be known:

- Basic probability concepts

- Random variables (discrete and continuous)

- Basic inference concepts (estimator for the mean, confidence intervals)

- Hypotheses testing

Requirements

For those who need to recover/revise some topics, I suggest the following chapters from the textbook (Newbold et al.):

3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

(During the first lectures I will recall some of these topics)

Lectures structure

At the end of each lecture, I will give some exercises that I will correct during the next lecture

Further I will highlight the main key points

Evaluation

Test (in laboratory) consisting of theoretical questions, exercises to be solved by hand, and exercises to be solved using Stata.

OR

Two partial tests (in laboratory) during the course period, consisting of theoretical questions, exercises to be solved by hand, and exercises to be solved using Stata. Final mark is the average of the two test marks (if both are sufficient, i.e. mark greater or equal than 18).

Attendee students, who have regularly (and on time) submitted ALL the assignments, can get a maximum of 3 extra points on the grade of the final exam based on the quality of their work.

Evaluation

Those who are not enrolled at University can take lectures but cannotgive the exam until they are enrolled.

(If they submit regularly - and on time - ALL the assignments, they can get amaximum of 3 extra points on the grade of the final exam)
